An abundance of produce, grandchildren & flowers.

Monday 28th August 2023: Bank Holiday Monday, we spent the morning working, John was cutting down stingers and mowing, always plenty of mowing to do. I did plenty of propagating either diving up plants or digging up plants that have got too big for where they are and dividing and potting them up. If done now they will hopefully put down enough roots to take them through the winter months. I staked the chrysanthemums as they are getting tall now too and it won’t be long before they are moved back inside the tunnel to save them from cold, wet or windy weather.

At lunchtime we downed tools and went to visit Mum, we made a detour to pick up some milk and that meant we didn’t see Mum who had driven to ours 😂 we waited for her to return to hers which she did about 10 minutes later.

In the evening after dinner we got working again, John mowing 😂 and me collecting plums, walnuts, hazelnuts and blackberries. This is a time of abundance and even if you don’t grow your own there is plenty of free food to be found if you know where to look and what to look for. Hazels are best found if you stand under the tree and look up, walnuts are beginning to fall to the ground and you can just pick those up. Hazels are easy to keep and use, even if they have the greenery still attached, that soon falls off as the nuts dry and ripen. Walnuts are more difficult so I would t blame anyone who would rather get them ready packed from the shop 😜 I have tried various methods over the years and there is no definite process that I can find on the internet but if you leave them in the green husk that shrinks and you can’t get it off, so the best thing is too put them outside (but not where the squirrel can find them) and wait for the husks to start splitting and then you can get them out. Once they are out they need cleaning and curing so that they can be kept without going mouldy, bit of a process as you can see but worth it for me at any rate. I know that nothing has been contaminated with any chemicals of any kind, with that in mind I am considering buying and oil press and pressing some for walnut oil. The abundance does not stop with the nut trees this year, everything seems to be prolifically fruiting, berries, soft fruit, some top fruit especially our plums and cooking apples but not our eating apples and pears although we have got some. That abundance may signal a tough winter ahead 🤷‍♀️ or it may just be all the rain we have had 😂 There is wild horseradish if you know where to look but we have some in the garden that can be harvested now, elderberries, wild blackberries, wild plums and plenty more. One thing I wish planning would insist on is incorporating food trees and shrubs at every opportunity.

Of course all the picking and gathering means a whole lot of processing ready for freezing because you can’t eat it all at once 😜 We will certainly have enough to keep us going and feed the family when they come for dinner in the winter months. We had Oscars party and bbq and the meat was what was not used at Johns birthday bbq in June, there were quite few sausages and some burgers left but they had been defrosted and so could not be frozen again. About thirty sausages and ten quarter pounder prime beef burgers, there was no way we could eat them all between the two of us and no way I was going to throw them away. I cooked all the sausages in the oven while the dinner was cooking and the burgers well they are just ground beef squished into shape so I broke them all up and cooked a big batch of mince and onions to freeze. These were quality burgers so perfectly good enough for turning into something else, waste not want not as always.

We have plenty of cherry tomatoes and cucumbers at the moment but not a lot else in the way of salad or veg this year sadly but next year I will hopefullybe well enough to sow seed.

Tuesday: Oscar day, playing, feeding, changing, singing, sleeping (for Oscar not for me sadly) and we went out for a walk in the paddock to pick some blackberries. My sister came over again with her granddaughter, I wouldn’t say they play together but at least this week Oscar acknowledged them 😂

In the evening my brother and his wife came over to collect a plant I had dug up for him and some plums for my great nephew who is their grandson and loved eating the plums at Oscars party on Saturday last.

Wednesday: I have Oscar again today for half a day, so more feeding, playing, changing, sleeping but he was a tad grizzly before his sleep and still grizzly when he woke up. So I decided we would go for a walk down into the village and have a look at the pond, it is actually a ford with a pond to the side but most people just call it the pond. I gathered a few bits of grass, yarrow and old man’s beard plus some honesty that was growing on the side of the road, I thought I might make a foraged dried wreath at some point.

When we got back Sam arrived with Mia, George and Lucie and the job on the agenda was to confine the horses to the small paddock as Jack has got a bit fat. Normally over summer we would have sun and no rain which means the grass would be parched but not this year and it is as green as it is in spring 🙄 although we are moving towards winter Jack still needs to be a bit more restricted than he has been. Once the school term starts again all three children will be at school full time and so Sam will have time to come and do some work with Jack (which will be a bit of a shock for him 😂) and get some time back into his muscles.

Charlie arrived had a quick coffee and collected Oscar to take him home and a short while after Sam and the children left. By now I am exhausted lol but I only have a day and a half to recover before having Sam’s three for the weekend while they go away to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. You may find me rocking in a corner by Sunday evening 😜 We have some jobs planned to get them involved in but it will be weather dependant so who knows how that will go, hope

Thursday: I keep thinking it’s Wednesday 🙄 anyhow I started early and by 9.30 I had done my first shift. It was not raining when I went out but by the time I came in I was soaking. I had been in the fruit cage which suffered this year because I wasn’t able to keep on top of it, Mum did come earlier in the year and weeded it but they soon took over again especially the bindweed. Normally I would tie in the autumn raspberry canes and cut back the currant bushes when harvesting but I couldn’t do either this year and so it’s a jungle. The kiwi has gone mad as has the logan berry, but I have cut everything back as much as possible and will have another go in a week or so. I could have come in once it started to rain but I was on a roll 😂 and I hate stopping when I am halfway through something besides it’s a good excuse to come in for tea and toast (and a change of clothes) once I was done.

Sort out flowers for orders today and then a quick walk down to the pub to deliver theirs. Not such a quick walk on the way back as it is a killer hill, no idea what the gradient is but it’s pretty steep 😂 that last 10ft is the worst. I wore my raincoat but luckily the rain held off.

I was talking to a customer the other day who mentioned a website called ‘weather without technology’ since 1958 the chap has been using nature to predict the likely weather outcomes in the months ahead. The thing that was particularly interesting was that nature prepares around 3 to 6 months ahead which when you think about it is obvious but we hardly notice it. Given that I have noticed a fair amount this year I thought I would read the articles on the site and they coincide with my thoughts. There are so many berries and nuts this year that even the less observant can’t have failed to notice can they? The ivy is smothered in ivy berries, the hawthorn and rose hips are abundant and one thing that hadn’t occurred to me before is the height of things like teasels, very tall this year indicating the ground may not be accessible and the food source needs to be up higher, all pointing to cold frozen ground? Who knows but it certainly looks that way if you ask me.

One of my favourite sayings is: If acorns abound in September, snow will be deep in December. They are as it seems to be a mast year, this then makes me wonder if the weather is all part of a cycle or rotation that we just don’t see (mini cycles even) and if we are so fixed on technology telling us what is ahead or what causes it that we no longer see what is obvious 🤷‍♀️ answers on a postcard please.

I am contemplating putting an extra layer on 😆 the colder months are knocking on the door 🥶

I made some chicken soup for dinner tonight along with an apple crumble, the wheel is definitely turning. I quite like autumn though and winter (although it seems to go on for ages) they are slower seasons, a time that I can do other things instead of dawn till dusk gardening.

I did cut flowers this morning for tonight’s and tomorrows customers, one lot was collected the other will be delivered.

I did a bit of dried flower work in the evening but I wasn’t really feeling it so decided to watch tv instead.

Friday: Busy morning first thing, I had flowers that were going to a customer, flowers to cut for customers later today and for the weekend which took a couple of hours to cut, sort and prep for conditioning. Then inside to whizz round with the hoover and duster before sitting down with a cup of tea and some toast. That was the calm before the storm as I have Mia, George & Lucie coming this morning and staying until Sunday while Sam and Luke go away for the weekend to celebrate their first wedding anniversary.

The children arrived and the parents departed and we had a full on day, apple picking, lunch, then blackberry picking in the paddock, watering the garden and plenty of other things inbetween. Grampy arrived home at around 4 which meant my ears could have a rest while they battered his 😂 after their dinner Josh, Flo and Shelley came over for a short while and they played outside until bedtime at 7.30pm. That was not sleep time though, no that was not until 10pm finally 😝

Saturday: I had turned off the alarm set at 6.30 because I didn’t want it to wake the children, needn’t have bothered they were awake by 6am 🤪 a bit of tv watching in bed before breakfast at 7 then washed, dressed and off out to do the animals with Grampy once he had finished his breakfast. I managed to get a shower without the bathroom being invaded which was a surprise 😂 and we are all set for the day ahead. Josh and Flo are coming over to play later with Shelley, fish and chips are on the menu for tonight. They want a bath because for some reason that is great fun at Nanas lol and they were playing too late last night to have one and so I have been constantly reminded this morning that they want one later.

I was indoors while they were out with Grampy and suddenly I hear Lucie shouting Nanny, nanny, nanny at the top of her voice, thinking there was an emergency I ran out only to hear Lucie say ‘we found lots of eggs’ lol. I am glad they find everything exciting even egg collecting 🥰

Sunday: Another early start at 6.30 this time, from the time they get up they don’t stop talking 😂 I had to juggle things a bit because I had flowers to get ready, I did most of it last night once they were settled in bed but I needed to do some finishing touches this morning so I left them watching a film with Grampy keeping an eye on them. After that we went out into the front paddock to help John, George is always especially desperate to help Grampy, I just hope he is always that keen. In for lunch and then some quieter play time until Mummy and Daddy arrived at around 2.30. Lucie couldn’t wait to go home, she was standing ready at the gate while we were collecting all their stuff together 😂 At 3 we popped down to the village dog show to support it, I had sponsored a class (fastest sausage gobbler) and given a prize of flowers plus some for the judges. Shelley, Josh and Flo came with us and we bought raffle tickets, ate ice cream, had a go at tombola and guess the weight of the cake. Then back home for a well earned rest and watch a film, I went out to water early evening but it was really hot out and so abandoned that till later, besides I am pretty pooped.

The weather is looking hot for next week, unbelievable, we have had no summer and now we get a week of it when the children go back to school. It will be early mornings for me for a while.

Plums, apples and sunflowers 🌻

Monday 14th August 2023: Another not so great summers day, I know it’s late summer but seriously it was more like autumn today. I am not sure we are going to get much of summer now, it would matter so much but Winter is loooooong and depressing enough on it’s own 😜

I decided to do something constructive today and as outside was a right off and I have spent more than enough time on flowers I thought I ought to clean the boot room. We have a proper boot room, not one of those you see in a glossy magazine that is all pristine and neat as if the occupant has no real idea what a boot room is for 😂 It is a working boot room and not for show or somewhere you keep clean wellies. The wellies still have mud on them, the coats would probably be thrown in the rag bin if you gave them to a charity shop and there is ‘stuff’ dumped everywhere. The dogs and cats eat and sleep in there and it gets pretty dusty or wet mud splattered on every surface. Saying I clean it is probably going a bit far, I hoover every nook and cranny, wipe down wipeable surfaces and give the dog beds a wipe over with disinfectant (because it smells like cherries and is lovely) it still takes me well over an hour to do just the basics though. I think the hoover is on the way out, we only use that hoover for that room and when that breaks we buy a new house one and the house one becomes the boot room one. We keep them separate because hoovering up pet hair and dust makes it smell a bit musty and I don’t want that lingering in the house. A couple of times after turning it off it would not turn on again until a few minutes later 🙄 I told John when he came home and he helpfully said ‘is the bag full’ ‘nope I changed that before I started so it’s not that’ looks like I will be buying g a new house hoover soon.

John did some more strimming when he came home from work while I got the dinner sorted and then we went to mums for a cuppa. When we got back a friend had dropped round two crates full of Victoria plums, the bough of her tree had snapped under the weight of them and she didn’t want them to go to waste. Our tree has not been that prolific this year and so I can definitely use some of them, the rest will be given away to various family and friends that want them. At one time I would have done a big batch cook up with them or made sauce or jam but these days I am not so inclined 😜 I will freeze plenty to use in the winter and probably make a few jars of jam.

When the bough breaks, the plums they will fall 😜

Tuesday: Oscar day today and he was very clingy and whingy all day lol. My sister came round with her granddaughter for a play date but Oscar was not having any of it and in the end I put him down for a sleep. We will try again another day but today was not a success 😂

In the evening I did a bit of dried flower work but really was too tired to do much else.

Wednesday: I whizzed round and got a few things done before Shelley came to pick me up and we went to meet Sam and Charlie at a sunflower field on a local farm. I didn’t even know it was there to be honest but it’s a little gem of a place, a lovely cafe with good food, great coffee, delicious ice cream and sunflowers too. Of all the cloudy days we have had over summer today was t really one of them 🙄 there was intermittent cloud but when the sun was out boy it was hot 🥵 not the best for me but I did have my hat and sun cream on because as you can imagine there is no shade where sunflowers grow.

We all had a wonderful time playing in the pathways that had been cut through the sunflowers and then ice cream while watching the harvested grain being sent up the shute to the silo. George was in his element with all the tractors and trailers coming and going, he is crazy mad about tractors and definitely wants to drive one when he is older 🥰

Pretty tired again this evening after today lol.

Thursday: I did quite a bit this morning in the poly tunnel, clearing dying mint foliage and weeds, trying to stake chrysanthemums which are leaning over and then dead heading anything that needed doing. Next I dug some bits of apple mint up to propagate, I had planted it with two other types of mint but it seems to be the weaker one and got a bit smothered. I definitely want much more of it for next year so need to propagate it now before it disappears altogether. I watered the small tunnel and then turned on the water in the big tunnel.

Sam arrived with the children and I was having them for a few hours while she did some work. They were full of boundless energy today and Nana not so much. We went and looked for blackberries in the small paddock at the back but the grass is so long the gate hardly opens so we came back down to find things to pick in the garden. We found tomatoes, cucumbers and a few logan berries, George had spotted the cooking apples and wanted to take some of them home to make ‘pudding pie’ 😂 It is lovely that they know they can find things to eat in my garden but there is not a lot left when they do!

Again in the evening I was tired but I really needed to do a few things, we are forecast thunderstorms and rain tomorrow and I wanted to get some flowers cut before then, and some orach cut for drying. The weather is really a pain in the arse at the minute, it is either raining or bloody hot, not much inbetween. I know it is much better than some places in the world but it is not great for the flowers, if you get sunshine it brings the flowers out and then the next day it rains and spoils them 🙄 If we get the rain tomorrow I have plenty of indoor jobs to do but it would be nice to have a couple of (not too hot or not raining) days in a row doing outside jobs.

Friday: It is 7.30 am and already heavy rain 🙄 it’s dark enough to need the lights on indoors, a snapshot of what lies ahead in the darker months. I quite like the seasons for that, even though we have not had much of a summer, when the time comes to close the curtains early and put the lights on it’s quite comforting. As I said I have a long list of indoor jobs to choose from so hopefully I will still have a productive day.

Oscar has to go to hospital today for an operation which is a shame because tomorrow is his first birthday and a party was all planned. That had to be moved to next week, it’s best to take the date you are offered in the current climate of strikes and post covid hangover problems.

I decided to get apples and plums prepped for the freezer, always takes a lot longer than you think especially peeling the apples when my hand is still not 100% yet. I would have gone the whole hog and made crumbles etc but there is no sugar in the cupboard so that will have to wait. I now have about 5kg of plums frozen 😂 and endless amounts of apples still to do, I am thinking of all the yummy puddings in the depths of winter and will be glad of them then. I keep toying with the idea of am,ing plum jam but John doesn’t like plum jam nor any other jam except strawberry, raspberry at a push so my efforts are wasted on him. The same applies to chutney, he won’t touch that at all no matter what is in it 😜 so not much point making that either 😏

While I was indoors it meant I could get a signal and wait to hear about Oscar and he has returned from surgery safely thank goodness 🥰 no matter what the operation it is one of the longest wait for parents especially when they are so little.

Saturday: We spent the best part of the day doing jobs around the farm, I have plug plants to pot up plus plenty of weeding and hoeing. I also spent a good deal of time hoovering the flower room, a quick sweep each time is ok but occasionally it needs more. I was thinking while I was doing it that it’s no good doing this if you don’t like spiders and creepy crawlies because they often can be found on the flowers and foliage and then get bought inside where they set up home 😂 Meanwhile John has been busy strimming and mowing, with all the rain everything has gone mad plus when we did get chance the mower broke. Now that is mended and the weather is more settled (mostly) we can at least get a handle on things and the place is starting to look much tidier than before.

1 already where does the time go 🥰

Mid afternoon we went over to see Oscar for his 1st birthday 🥳 He was asleep for the first hour or so when we were there but eventually he woke up and we were able to give him his present and sing happy birthday to him. I think he was a bit bemused wondering why everyone was looking at him and singing lol.

Back home in the evening and we watched a film rather than doing any more work.

Sunday: The weather was nice and we had a lot of work to do so got on with it early. I had a flower workshop at 10am for a couple of hours then some lunch before sorting out the flowers for the hats I needed to do. I was worried that the flowers were not going to go overnight without water, initially the customer wanted to collect them tonight for tomorrow but I rang and said I would be happier dropping them off early in the morning so that they could stay in water overnight and I can attach them to the hats just before they get delivered. I have tried to use flowers that will do well enough out of water for a few hours which is a challenge, things like sedum and Pom Pom dahlias have more of a tolerance than things like cosmos which would just keel over.

Again John spent his time strimming and mowing 😜

Lately I have seen a couple of insects that I haven’t seen before, flying insects one I would class as a bee type and the other a moth but I didn’t have my phone either time so couldn’t get a photo. I don’t recognise either of them so I am hoping I will see them again when I have my phone with me. John is also sure he saw…..wait for it…… a door mouse 😮 if that is indeed what it was then oh my days that would be epic. He is used to seeing field mice and wood mice and it wasn’t the same though again we have no photo to clarify. The reason he saw it was because it was underneath the Guinea pigs bowl which had upturned otherwise he wouldn’t have. We do have plenty of hazel trees and when I say plenty I mean at least 15 all in one place and then plenty all around the rest of the farm so it is possible that we might have them, I will have to check the fallen nuts this year to see if they have been chewed. It would be very exciting but chances are it is some other type like harvest mouse or something lol.

It’s hot and dry, that is all I have to say 🥵

Tuesday 9th August 2022: No idea what I did on Monday apart from cut a whole load of flowers for an order that was cancelled 😏 and went to my brothers in the evening for his birthday. The rest is a blur 😝

Tuesday: After making up a couple of jam jars, sorting flowers for drying and making up a bouquet I went to Shelley’s with Charlie, Sam and the twins also went and we spent most of the day there. Shelley made lunch and the children played indoors some of the time and with the splash mat outside some of the time. It was hot 🥵

When I came home I had half an hour sit down and then spent 4 hours watering, yes 4 bloody hours of my life watering. Watering everything that was necessary, about two thirds of everything, the other third I have had to let take it’s chance 😔 Normally, in a normal year I would only be concentrating on the tunnels, greenhouse and anything in pots but this year it has to include all the beds both ornamental and vegetable. We have had no significant rain since we came back from our holiday in early June and coupled with that we have had ridiculously high temperature consistently and it’s not over yet. This means in order to keep everything alive I have to constantly water, the fact that I didn’t do any last night has a big knock on effect the next day. It’s tiring but I have invested a lot of time and effort into the veg, flowers and ornamental beds and so I can’t just give up, not to mention the money that plants cost. To give up now would cost me dearly, mentally, emotionally and financially, this year has taken gardeners by surprise but I will make sure it doesn’t happen again next year 🙄

Wednesday: It’s sooo bloody hot that evening standing around makes you sweat 😅 uuurgh give me back the traditional English weather if I wanted relentless heat I would go on holiday to a hot country and that is something we don’t do 😂

Busy morning of getting jobs done, cutting flowers for delivery today and then on to pick tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, peppers and plums. I also decided that damage limitation was called for and pulled the cabbage and kohl Rabi plus carrots, it’s too hard trying to keep them watered so time to get them in the freezer. The courgettes I am picking when they are small (baby) so that I don’t need to water as much as I would to get them to normal size. From here on in fruit and outside veg will have to take their chances, I will only be watering the necessary plants.

I then spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon prepping it all for the freezer. Slicing, chopping, peeling, blanching, bagging, cooling and finally freezing. I also made up three batches of crumble mix, stewed some apples with sugar and some maple syrup and made up four small apple crumbles which went into the freezer along with a bag of crumble mix. I did intend to make some plum jam but in all honestly I was tired by then and still had flowers to make up so I cleared away, washed up and I will do the jam in the next couple of days.

John came home early and went off to deliver the flowers for me, I had a phone call from the neighbouring farm to say they had lost some piglets and could I keep an eye out for them, I haven’t seen them yet but hopefully they will find them soon.

Tonight I will not be able to get any watering done as we are off on a short train journey for an evening trip. It’s going to be a round of watering for me again tomorrow that will take hours 🙄

With the complete lack of rain we have decided to increase the amount of rain we can hold, the amount that comes off our roof is an awful lot so makes sense to hold as much of it as possible and so we have ordered another 12,000 litres of tanks, that will take us up to around 30,000litres of water storage. Sod’s law we won’t even need it next year but ‘be prepared’ is a sensible mantra I reckon and so prepared is what I will be, for that at least.

If you are reading this and living in a hot, dry climate then all tips appreciated 😁 Approx 9th June was the last time we had any significant rain and temps have been at least 25c and mostly in the 30s pushing up just beyond 40c 🥵 According to farmers there is no significant rain in the forecast for at least another 30 days 🙄 crops are suffering as well as wildlife. Last night while watering I noticed around 30 sparrows making a racket in a puddle of water I had made on the driveway, I went into the garden and collected up all the shallow dishes I could find and filled them with water for them. A Robin was also sat in the tree watching me and so I filled up the bird bath (which I do daily) and watched him enjoying a much needed bath lol. I know I am going to hate the winter weather when it comes but seriously this is another level of ridiculousness 😬 If it is climate change, it’s coming a lot faster than predicted, it’s not good news for the planet or anything that lives on it 😔

Thursday: No idea what I did and it’s too hot to care 😝 I did plant up some alstroemeria at around 9pm, it wasn’t much cooler but the light was fading and I wanted to get them into the ground. The moon was beautiful, almost a full moon but not quite, that comes tomorrow evening.

Friday: What can I say except, it’s hot and dry, I am basically just trying to get from day to day until hopefully one of the days the temperature falls or we have rain 🙄 I spent most of the day making up button holes and hair combs with dried flowers plus a small arrangement to fix to a headband. I can’t show you the pictures yet as it is for a wedding that hasn’t happened but when it does I will.

Saturday: I was up early as was John, he went off to get feed for the poultry, I did the usual household bits then outside to get some watering done, We then had to pop out for an hour and get back to hand over some flowers to a customer 🥰 I can’t remember what other jobs we did but there were a fair few before coming indoors for the middle part of the day and watch some films. Back out in the evening once it was cool enough and more watering, I watched the meteor shower for a while, saw three, before going to bed.

Sunday: Still bloody hot 🥵 seriously it’s scorching weather, relentless too. We were up early again and it was nice and cool at that time of the morning so I got some watering done, John said ‘shall we have more tea’ at 7am, ‘nope’ I replied ‘we need to get the small paddock cut before it gets too hot’ so that’s what we spent the next hour doing. It had got long (long but mostly dead) and needed tidying up. John carried on outside for a couple of hours while I came inside and made plum jam. The thing is that the fruit will not wait no matter how hot the temps are the jam still needs making 🙄 We then spent the hottest part of the day inside again and went back out until dark once it had cooled down a touch, though that is not much at the minute.

I am sure you are all feeling it too, hot and bothered, the paddocks are as dead as I have ever seen them, there are huge fissures opening up in the ground, the massive trees that are around 50 years old are beginning to wilt, the berries that the birds would be feeding on to fatten up for winter are shrivelling up and there is not a drop of water to be found anywhere for the wildlife such as bees, butterflies, birds, beetles etc. Each day I am trying to keep plants alive and each evening when I go out they are parched again. I deadheaded some roses earlier and the petals were crispy 😳 I don’t think I have ever sweated so much before even when sitting still, when I was outside I kept thinking something was crawling on my leg but no it’s just beads of sweat running 😂 I am not one for praying but spending most of my time just trying to keep things alive is seriously taking its toll on my sanity so I am praying the rain comes tomorrow. It will fill up the water butts and hopefully give me the day off from running around like an idiot, I may even be able to get something different done for a change. Anyone know any good rain dances 😝

A bank holiday, more of the harvest & the sun finally came out!

Monday 30th August 2021: Bank Holiday Monday, it’s nice having an extra day at the weekend, shame we can’t do it every weekend. We set the alarm for 6.30 this morning even though it’s a holiday, better start practising for the working week ahead, John has jobs to go to and I have plenty to be getting on with here.

After doing the rounds John went out to get a bit more of the driveway done, by the time he finishes it will be time to start again 🙄 I had plenty to do in the garden and started off with a fair bit of picking, it’s fast and furious at this time of year and I picked courgettes, cucumbers, peppers, chillies, tomatoes, runner beans, a couple of apples that were ready, some pears and a couple of melons. While I was picking the runner beans I noticed that John had not recovered the cauliflower and cabbage plants I put in a few weeks ago. They are on the area he has been putting new boxes in and we had to work around them, when I was helping him the day before I had said we need to make sure the cover goes back on to stop the butterflies laying eggs. He worked on his own yesterday and took the cover off but didn’t replace it 🤬 I called him a few choice names and then had to carefully look over all the leaves and get any eggs off, they would be ravaged if I didn’t, weeks of growing almost ruined by being completely thoughtless 😤 He was contrite enough to say sorry but I don’t think he fully gets it 🤷‍♀️ I will have to check them daily for a while just in case I missed any. I also spent a good bit of time covering the other boxes with membrane to stop the cats using them as a toilet block. I dug in some soil conditioner that I already had and also some biochar that I ordered at the beginning of the year which I also dug in. Biochar is organic material that has been burnt at extremely high temperatures without oxygen, it helps with soil structure, it can hold onto to water and therefore water soluble nutrients, it’s beneficial for soil micro organisms, reduce nutrient leaching, basically it stabilises the soil and it will remain in the soil for 1000 years or more so they say. It captures carbon and holds onto it so it is very good from and environmental point of view as well, let’s see if it makes any difference, I hope it does, all the science says it works well.

It was one of my nieces birthdays today and so we went for a BBQ late afternoon and into the evening.

Tuesday: A housework day today so not much else going on other than hoovering polishing and cleaning.

Wednesday: I did a few bits and pieces this morning, then Shelley arrived with Josh and Flo for a visit. John called in mid morning in-between jobs and had a cup of tea with us all. Once everyone had left I went into the small tunnel and spent a good while cutting back all the leaves on the tomato plants. All that is left are the stems and any trusses that still have tomatoes of any decent size on, I will leave them on to ripen. Any fruits that were slightly on the turn from green have been picked and placed in the kitchen window to carry on ripening. I also picked some French beans and watered the greenhouse. A bit tired today so had a couple of hours sit down and catch up with some favourite programmes before sorting out dinner. Then mid evening it was time to go along to what I hope is going to be my new hobby, flower arranging 😁 It was the clubs first meeting since the beginning of the pandemic and there was a good turn out. I knew a couple of members slightly and made the acquaintance of a few more, they were a friendly lot and I came away with a list of what I need for next months meeting where I will be doing my first arrangement 😁 I have done arrangements a few times before for things like Christmas but I want to learn about techniques and form. It’s nice to have a new hobby especially one I have wanted to do for years, finally got there.

Thursday: A busier day today so far. Once the morning jobs were finished I set about processing the produce I had lying around waiting to be sorted, there were a few windfall cooking apples from the front tree so I made apple and raspberry (only had a few, bee rubbish weather for later fruiting) crumble for dinner later, chopped up peppers and French beans to open freeze along with some lemon slices which will be put into a tub and used when needed. I was saying to Shelley about not buying lemon as they get left in the fruit bowl sometimes, she said she slices hers and freezes them so I thought that was a sensible idea and decided to do that as well. Then I went out and did some picking, plenty of cucumbers this morning, eating apples, tomatoes, swede, a banana squash, carrots, celery leaves, garlic chives and a small amount of basil and coriander. The last four I have literally just frozen them as they are in tubs for use through the winter. The swede and carrot I cooked together and mashed, that will be frozen, the banana squash will keep for a few weeks so no need to sort that just yet, the tomatoes are on the window sill with plenty of others ripening and I am thinking I might make some tzatziki with some of the cucumbers, I was just researching to see how well it freezes. I also had to pick a couple more bunches of flowers as the one out front sold and I harvested some lemon grass to put out for sale as well as putting some lemon plants up for sale on social media.

I had to go and pick up a parcel that got delivered to next door instead, it was live plants so needed picking up fairly quickly. On the way I thought I would just have a quick look in the shed and found that someone had taken some of the jalapeño peppers from the carton they are sold in. This made me cross as they had left four in there, I weigh these out so that everybody gets a fair deal and just to take some but not all is annoying to say the least. It could be that they only wanted a few and paid for all of them but even so that’s not helpful. It could be that they just took them and didn’t pay at all I have no idea 🤷‍♀️ We run it on an honesty system and I think 98% of people are good citizens but some can’t help themselves 🙄 I don’t want to be watching all day just to make sure people are being honest, that’s not good for me and not good for the customers. I try to sell the produce as eco friendly as possible, in paper bags, loose and also cardboard cartons, the only thing I have to use are plastic cartons for fruit and things like tomatoes but they can be returned and washed so that’s not too bad. However in light of this discovery (not the first incident we have had very recently) I have found biodegradable, clear, zip seal bags and as long as I buy 500 they are not so expensive that I have to put prices up. It will be better really because I can then put out bunches of fresh herbs which I couldn’t before as they go limp quickly and I can seal the produce in the bag which will be better from a hygiene/Covid perspective, so in a roundabout way it has helped but still, why would you do that 😕

I have been following the build up to an interesting experiment, eating only what you grow, forage or barter (goods for goods) for the month of September. It is more difficult than you think, when I first listened and watched I thought, well that would be easy enough, but actually the more I thought about it the harder it became, as you will see it is things like salt and coffee that are irreplaceable lol. Although salt can be foraged from the ocean obviously, it is very time consuming process for very little return. Below is the link to the you tube channel if you are interested.

Friday: Started of with the same weather as the last couple of weeks, grey, overcast and a tad cold but the sun came out at lunchtime 😁 I did a fair bit of picking to begin the day which included a good load of plums, the Victoria’s on closer inspection seem to be mostly good, I also picked greengage and damsons. I tidied the kitchen and planned to make jam or chutney etc but the postman arrived with some plants and as I have a busy couple of days ahead I thought I better get them in the ground. They are kale plants, I didn’t sow seed in time and so had to order 10 plants, 5 different types so it will be interesting to see what they all taste like. Then as I was out there I decided to organise another raised bed and plant up some bulbs (allium of various types, tulips, and ranunculus) phlox, geum and knapweed, these are the first of my planting for cut flowers next spring. I dug up a few other small plants ready to divide, they are resting in a bucket of water for the time being as the sun was a bit too strong for me to stay out (Sod’s law 😂)

Kale planted for the winter, always good to have some tasty fresh veg in the colder months. These have now been covered so that the butterfly’s don’t lay eggs on them and the cats don’t scratch them up 🙄
This is all the greenery that is left of the tomato plants but even since I stripped them the remaining fruits have been ripening 😁

Saturday: Spent the day away from the Smallholding leaving John in charge, I went shopping for my Mother of the Bride outfit 😁

Sunday: Been super busy today, cutting back, dead heading, mowing, watering as it’s really dry everywhere 🙄 The sun made an appearance, finally right at the end of summer it decided to come out in full force 😂 I will probably do some watering this evening as well just to keep things ticking over. Some nights are cold enough for a good dew which will suffice at this time of year but with the hot day like today extra watering might be needed so everything doesn’t keel over.

Harvest time, home grown flowers & plenty of jobs to do 😝

Monday 22nd August 2021: Well we had the best weeks holiday 😁 the weather was just right for me, the sea was as calm as a lake all week long, the food was out of this world good and we rested and relaxed a lot, job done now back on with the work 😂

Shelley has looked after the farm beautifully, everything was in order and then some as her and Sam had done some mowing and weeding and clearing, it all looked lovely on our return. In order to keep up the good work we have not been idle since arriving home and have been trimming the front hedge, hoeing, sweeping and tidying, still a fair bit more to do but it’s looking loved again. Hopefully we can get quite a bit achieved this week as John has another week away from his plumbing and we can crack on here with tidying, strimming, cutting back, mowing, weeding, lol it’s never ending 🤪

We were up early and ready to crack on, I got some picking done and checking over everything to see what needed doing. John got busy with the morning jobs and then back to the front driveway which he has gone to town on, really pulling out and raking up all the stinging nettles and weeds. I picked another lovely bunch of flowers for the kitchen, beautiful pink dahlias this week 😁 We worked until almost lunchtime then John took me over to Sams to look after the kiddies while she went for her second vaccination. John was supposed to come back home and do some work but he made a cuppa sat down and had a sleep instead 😂 Once he had picked me up and we came home it was my turn for a quick kip, I was exhausted after and early start and grandchildren sitting 🤪 John went out and cut the middle paddock and gave the back paddock a better cut while I had a sleep. Once awake I picked some raspberries and blueberries, I still think birds are getting in the fruit cage as there is not a red raspberry to be seen, normally there are loads, I think I will definitely grow more yellow ones next year as the birds don’t touch them 🤷‍♀️ I picked a cucumber, tomatoes, garlic chives, celery greens, and carrots for dinner this evening, John has chicken with runner beans which I had already picked, plus the home grown carrots and potatoes while I have chicken with salad and baked potato and some home grown fruit with yoghurt for dessert including a home grown melon 🥰

I am really enjoying doing them, I think it is a completely different perspective when you can hear me talking about things rather than reading them.

Tuesday: We got off to a flying star with all the usual morning jobs and then John continued with the driveway, it’s hard work but he is doing a great job and it looks fab. I picked some flowers this morning to go out with the produce and eggs, I definitely want to be doing more flowers and plants for sale. With that in mind I collected some seeds from a lovely soft pink snap dragon I have growing and I took some cuttings from some pinks, if I do a little bit every day I will soon have plenty of plants to put out next Spring. I have a large order of tulip bulbs arriving in September, most will go into the garden but a lot will be potted up and hopefully ready for Easter next year. I picked courgettes and lots of tomatoes this morning though the tomato plants are coming to the end now as they definitely have something wrong with them, I think it is from spray watering, I really need to get set up to water at ground level really. The lads from Wildpoint arrived to take some photos, they are working hard to get the website off the ground and have already had a piece in the Guardian and have been approached by a main tv station to do a bit on one of their daily programmes which is great for them. Exciting stuff and they were very enthusiastic about our little Wildpoint campsite 🥰

Mid morning we went to the garden centre for a mooch around and some lunch and then round to Mums for a cup of tea or two before returning home. As the sun was out we decided to wait until later in the day to carry on outside. Once it was cool enough John went out to put some things in the skip, it was changed over this morning and we always have plenty to fill a new one up 😂 I went out to pick some plums, the greengage and Victoria’s are ready and I think I will make jam with those. While I was in the vicinity I did all the water bowls for the animals in the orchard, rabbit, quail, light Sussex and turkeys plus the guinea pigs. Sadly I found one of the pigs in the last throes of dying, I have no idea why as it was fine yesterday although he is the one I had to separate because the others bullied him. Maybe they knew there was something wrong, animals have the instincts to detect things we can’t even see and I’m guessing this was something internal as there were no external signs of anything 😢

When we were driving to Mums I spotted a compost bin that had been put out on the pavement ‘free to take’ yay, I had been looking round the farm for something to use in the front area so that I didn’t have to keep taking it round the back and so that little find was perfect 👍

Wednesday: Busy day today, it was overcast so I made the most of being able to be outside all day 😁 Mostly I was weeding and clearing, the peas have finished so I took down the canes and cleared away dead foliage, weeded the bed and I will cover it to stop the cats using it as a toilet area and keep new weeds at bay. There is plenty of weeding to do, it’s amazing how much time it all takes lol I spent most of the day doing that. Meanwhile John was finding things that needed to go in the skip and burning the hedge clippings and all the weeds he has been digging up. It doesn’t sound like we did a lot but we really did 😂 we were tired by 3.30 so went in for a sit down and a cheeky nap 🤪 After I had cooked dinner and we had finished eating I used the tomatoes I picked yesterday to make some quality tomato soup. I used a BBC Good Food recipe as it does not have any extras such as flour as I don’t think it’s needed. Most of the ingredients were home grown, tomatoes, onion, carrots, celery and bay leaves, just the addition of vegetable stock, tomato purée and a pinch of sugar (which reduces the acidity of the tomatoes) were needed to finish it off, lovely jubbly. That will go into some pour and store bags ready for the winter.

I also strung up the red onions to store, these were a good crop unlike the white onions which won’t store and those have been chopped and frozen instead.

Thursday: Had a busy morning, first up after the usual stuff then onto blending up the tomato soup, I left it to cool down overnight so I could do it this morning and then freeze it in four portions of approx 500ml each in pour and store bags. Then straight onto making 4lbs of Victoria plum jam and 3lbs of garden chutney plus a ‘compost cake’ 😂 I found a lovely site with both these ‘formulas’ rather than recipes, formulas because she just talks about the basics and the ingredients are whatever you have. The garden chutney this time had courgettes, onion, apple and runner beans in it and the compost cake had banana, kiwi, plums and a satsuma as the ingredients. Basically it’s a cake that uses up fruit that is probably about to go into the compost, as long as it’s not mouldy or dry as a bone it can go in, the banana was black on the outside but still useable inside, the kiwi was a bit squidgy (it was one from the fruit bowl on holiday lol) the plums were the cherry plums I picked before we went away and so needed using up and there were a few grapes that went in as well. Makes a lovely, fairly heavy cake with is almost like a bread pudding texture, I had mine with some yoghurt when it was still warm 🥰 The chutney has a basic chutney base (sugar, vinegar, apples, onions) and then whatever you have to use up which in my case was some wonky courgettes and some tougher runner beans, I threw in some sultanas for good measure and I added some powdered allspice but you could use any combination of spices that you prefer.

Meanwhile John was very busy tidying up the stable block, over time lots of things had got put away (dumped) in there and now everything has been put away neatly and it looks great, he then went on to start cutting up a huge pile of wood that we still have. We decided to keep the wood and use it on the fire pit, should be enough to last about 5 years 😂

In the afternoon we had a rest, did a bit more late afternoon and then some dinner, out to get a bit of shopping and a bit more when we came back. Watering the greenhouse, feeding the cats and dogs, putting the birds away etc etc, feels like the jobs never end sometimes.

Cheeky little Anna cat playing hide and seek, she will go to Shelley’s once they are back from their holiday, no doubt she will keep them on their toes 😂

Friday: Another busy, busy day today, got to make the most of John still being at home 😉 He started off with the feed rounds and then went off to get a feed load, meanwhile I did the usual morning things and then set about picking which was a big session 🙄 Cucumbers, courgettes, beetroot, tomatoes, sweetcorn, jalapeños, all went out into the Little Shed along with some plum jam and garden chutney. Then I got started on covering an area that I cleared yesterday where the peas were, I don’t want the cat using it as a toilet so I have put down membrane to also prevent the weeds growing until I decided what to do with it. Then I was looking at the old bean bed, we moved the runner beans last year and it has been successful (with a modification) and now this bed needed repairing and tidying up, cue John 🤪 I called him over to help decide what was the best thing to do and we spent until gone 2pm taking out the old sides, digging in pallet collars and tidying the whole bed up. It will now be a one of these collars, which make great raised beds, instead of one long bed. It will be easier to cover individual boxes when they are not being used and also easier to make frames to put netting or environmesh over. We did have to leave some things in situ as I have leeks growing at one end and brassicas growing halfway down but we have put in four new collars and will do some more tomorrow. I am thinking that I will use some of the beds for some of the cutting flowers for next year but the decision has not yet been finalised.

Late afternoon we went round to water Shelley’s plants while she is away and then drop some veg off to Mum and have a quick cuppa. Back home for dinner and a restful evening (well except the putting to bed stint)

Saturday: A bit late up this morning, we have our daughters dog while they are away and it howled all night long 🤪 Once we were up and about and had got all the morning feeding and letting out done John cleaned out the ducks while I prepped some dwarf beans for the freezer. Mid morning we went out, there was a carnival on in the next town so we went for a mooch about, I won a nice ha dang, a hatching dinosaur egg and a bottle of wine on the tombola stall 😂 I also pledged to go along to the local flower arranging group which is starting up again on Wednesday evening, I am really looking forward to that, I have wanted to do it for a few years now and so I seized the opportunity to have a chat with them and said I would go along, the lady said I will probably be the youngest one there 😂 the way I see it that just means there is a lifetime of knowledge I can glean information from 😁 When we got back we decided to mostly take the rest of the day off as we have been working so hard this week, and we are tired from not getting a decent sleep during the night 🙄

Sunday: After having a more relaxed day yesterday we got on with it again this morning, after all the feeding and letting out was done John did another of the raised beds in the garden, I did a lot of dead heading and cutting back on the flower garden. Shelley, Martin and the children came over to collect the last little kitten who is called Anna and then we went to the DIY shop to get some bags of compost. On the way back we called in to see my brother and his wife for a coffee and came back mid afternoon so up to that point we didn’t actually get much done at all 😂 John continued with that theme by having a sit down but I got on with clearing some of the bed in the veg garden that will make way for more lawn. It has all the herbs in there but also some plants left from when I used it as a nursery bed before the flower garden got finished. My plan was to dig up all the seedlings and plants that were left in there and pot them up ready for next spring either to use or sell on. So far I have potted up 79 plants 😲 of one type or another and there are plenty more to do. I have hundreds of strawberry plants and runners to dig up, some I will save, some will be given away and some will be potted up for selling next spring. The same goes for all the herbs I will be digging up and dividing. John did come back out eventually and did two more boxes/beds, I think he said there will be 11 in all so that is 13.2m long (approx 43ft) by a metre wide, each box is 1.2m x 1m and I think it will be much easier to cover the boxes individually with different things depending on what is growing and what stage they are at. I carried on digging bits up and potting them until I felt I needed a sit down 🤪

Bank holiday tomorrow, it’s always nice when the weekend is extended, then job is back to the day job on Tuesday and I will be back on me tod again 🙄 Things get very busy in the garden at this time of year, harvesting everything that seems to be coming in fast and furiously, taking cuttings, collecting seeds, dividing plants, planting bulbs, cutting back, pruning, planting winter veg, prepping, freezing, drying, jams, chutneys, sauces, syrups, yep it’s a busy time for sure but it keeps me out of trouble.

Surprise! Mid week interlude 😀

I thought I would do a quick round up of the photos of produce I took over the 2020 growing season in date order so you can see how the year progressed. I love how vibrant the colours all are and can’t wait to start harvesting again this year. What I really should do is weigh everything to see exactly how much I get, the photos represent probably 1/2 of what I actually harvest so it would be interesting to have an accurate record.

Changeable weather, plenty of produce, especially plums 😂

Monday 17th August 2020: Up and about this morning get some veg picked, I think I need a bigger basket 😂 loads of tomatoes this morning and the conference pears were ready to pick. After sorting it all out, putting some out for sale, finding homes for the rest of it, I got started on the front area we are creating the border in. There were bramble bushes growing which needed digging out and then shredding any material from the existing bush that I cut back yesterday. I had a go at a few of the perennial weeds as well but there is still plenty more to do. That took me up to about 11.30, that’s when I heard the first crack of thunder and felt the first spots of rain. Honestly we seem to dive from one extreme to another as far as the weather is concerned, I’m pretty sure it ought to be a little more constant than this 😏 A customer arrived to collect the last of this batch of hens, the next batch is nearly all sold already and they are not due in until October 🙄 The rain got heavier but that’s fine as I have a bit of tidying to do indoors, I haven’t done any all weekend and things get plonked down all over the place, I have looked at the forecast for the rest of the day and it’s a washout so might as well stay in.

Although staying in was my plan it didn’t actually carrying on raining and so all I did indoors was the washing up, a quick phone call to Sue and then outside again. I wanted to dig up the rest of the carrots because the rain we are forecast all week will not do them any favours so might as well get them up and into the freezer. I found a marrow that had escaped my eye as they often do, it’s not too big but big enough, some of the smaller courgettes had rotted at the ends so I cut those off and threw them to the chickens and I picked a few berries from the fruit cage and some cape gooseberries from the tunnels. The clouds were intermittent and you know what that means for me, diving in an out of shade areas lol, it’s pretty strong when it makes an appearance 🙄

This mornings haul, under the tomatoes and pears there is a good layer of beans as well 😀

Someone gave me some packets of chilli seeds back in spring, I am not a fan of spicy food as it causes my acid reflux to play up but I grew them anyway and now I have loads of little Thai chillies lol. Not sure what I am going to do with them apart from put them out for sale. It’s the first time I have successfully grown chillies though, must have been the high temps we had back in spring and a decent greenhouse, I might try growing some with less heat next year.

I am running out of available space in the kitchen, there are tomatoes and plums everywhere 😂 I think a good amount of tomatoes will be ripe enough to pick again tomorrow as well, I really need to do something with them.

Tuesday: I decided to make today an ordinary day, that is nothing out on the farm or in the garden except the essentials, a day pottering around indoors, a bit of cleaning, washing, tidying away and anything else I fancy doing. I started off with good intentions and got the boot room hoovered and tided and a few bits in the kitchen, then got side tracked by chatting with customers. One couple I was chatting to come once a year when they are down in their caravan on holiday, they always come and get their breakfast eggs here which is lovely 😀 A bit more hoovering and put the washing on the line though I’m not sure how long it will be out there before it rains 🙄 I am not picking anything today as I have plenty still to sort out before I get more in, I have ordered a food mill/purée maker so that I can purée the tomatoes etc for passata. I made some last year if you remember and I experimented with one jar in the fridge and one in the cupboard to see how they did, well they are still both fine so that’s a year they have kept easily, really ought to use them up lol.

Wednesday: On reflection I should have done some outside things yesterday! It’s 7.30am it’s already raining and it’s set in for the day according to the forecasters 🙄 There are plums on the trees still to pick and there are seeds to collect, none of this couldn’t wait until the next dry day except that there are strong winds forecast after that, the plums will all be on the floor 😦 Hopefully somewhere in between our demented weather I will get an hour or two to do these jobs. They say make hay while the sun shines and I should have heeded the old proverb 😏 Having said that there is only so much you want to be doing or you would be totally submerged in the processes of self sufficiency, maybe you should be, I don’t know. What I do know is that to be totally self sufficient in food you would have to work from dawn to dusk at this time of year. We are ss in fruit/veg/nuts/eggs and that keeps me busy enough imagine if we had a house cow as well, I’m not sure there are enough hours in the day even if I really would love one. Imagine on top of those two you grew your own grain as well and reared meat in what ever form you decided, that’s a very busy, full on life, I salute anyone that manages all of those!

I could bake today, I always used to say, rainy days are baking days but to be honest we are trying to eat healthier and cakes and pies don’t fall into the healthy category 😂

I was delighted to see The Guardian report that the interest in allotments soared during the pandemic, our fragile food security was exposed during those early days and people recognised the need to have home grown food (and by that I also mean UK grown) instead of relying on imports. My aim is always to encourage people to have a go at growing your own even if you just start with a tomato bush and some herbs, it’s something and you never know, you might get hooked 😀 There are so many gardens in our wonderful country, town gardens, country gardens even some city gardens and the potential to grow food is massively overlooked. Even small spaces have potential with the idea of vertical gardening, get creative, you don’t need masses of ground area and the taste is amazing.

In my blog I try to keep it simple and non reactive (on the whole anyway) because it’s a diary blog after all but there are a lot of topics that I research or follow in much more depth than I write about. One of those is the fragility of how we live, not just the climate but our fundamental way of life, which is pretty fragile as shown by the pandemic. That was a disease and on the scale it’s not a bad one either, of course to those affected it is catastrophic but at least it wasn’t airbourne, can you imagine how cataclysmic that would have been and who’s to say that won’t happen sometime in the future with a different disease. Now you are beginning to see why I keep it quite neutral aren’t you 😂 The government stepped in and kept the country ticking over by ploughing money into the system because to them that’s the most important thing and even I was grateful for that. Now imagine that airbourne disease and how it is affecting everyone, people are dying by the tens of thousands and the systems that we rely on can no longer function, what are we going to do? Anything is possible as we have just witnessed, how well are we equipped to manage?, on the whole, we are not and that is the scary part. Electricity & Water, outside of the basic food system, are the two biggies to focus on, at the moment they are pumped to our properties with uninterrupted supply, on the whole. We don’t think about it until the supply stops for whatever reason, but if you really think about it you will begin to realise just how much we rely on it, electric especially. If the power plants closed, because there was no one to run them, EVERYTHING shuts down even your water supply 🙄 If you want to learn more then there are plenty of pod casts out there, Permaculture for the future is a good one to listen too, and far from giving you nightmares I think the knowledge builds strength within you to cope with whatever life throws at you, I hope so anyway.

Does anyone have the address for ‘offmet ‘ I want to write a complaint about the weather 😜 Seriously, this time last week we were sweating our nuts off, today it’s umbrellas and rain coats all day and then we have high winds coming, nothing resembling a ‘normal’ late summers day in sight 😒 I think I need to stop watching the forecast and just be surprised by whatever it is wet get thrown as us, it’s just depressing otherwise.

Thursday: A nice morning so far, not raining and not too hot. The first job on my list was to pick plums, with the high winds forecast later today and tomorrow, most of the weekend in fact, the plums would be all on the floor pretty quickly so needed picking pdq. I now have many kgs of plums to sort and process 😂 I also picked a few other bits, the tomatoes are coming in thick and fast, I picked beans of various variety’s and of course courgettes, marrows and cucumbers. This is where we move from the ‘grow your own’ into the self sufficient realm, definitely self sufficient in fruit and veg that’s for sure and so many things can be made from the basics that we won’t go short for the next few seasons 😀

There is still plenty to harvest, the sweet corn I checked today but that’s not ready just yet, butternut squash still growing nicely, plenty of turnips, beetroot, swede and leeks still in the ground, cauliflowers coming on, there are also Oca in the ground that won’t be harvested until after the from and the yacon, I have no idea when to harvest that but I’m sure it will become evident. There are chillies continuing to grow and ripen along with the cues and toms, next will be nuts and blackberries 😀 busy times ahead!

It’s 1.30pm and I am having a sit down, mainly to stretch my back out lol, I have spent the whole morning processing. It’s surprising how much time it all takes but I now have 8 jars of plum jam, and for the freezer two containers of tomato purée, two bags of plums and a tray of French beans, plus two plum breads in the oven. Seriously, that has taken me about 3 hours and there are still loads of plums left to do something with 🙄 Hopefully the plum bread will turn out ok, the recipe was a bit finicky but I just threw it all in a gave it a stir so we will see 😜

Plum bread was delish 😋 After a rest I did more plums then all the washing up, got some bread on the go, sorted the eggs, got the dinner, knackered now, over and out for today, writing anyway, still got to water the tunnels later!

I did spend a pleasant half an hour gathering some seeds from marigolds, cornflowers, love in a mist, poppies and morning glory. I intend to cast theses next spring, along with a few others that have not set seed yet, in a part of the veg garden that I struggle to get round to. Hopefully they will cover it and provide some lovely colour and nectar and save me weeding 😀

Friday: Oh my word they were not wrong about the wind, some of the gusts are savage 🙄 First job was to get the egg shed sorted with stuff for sale as Fridays are proving to be pretty busy at the minute. There was a lady at the gate who’s words were ‘I have a strange request’ that’s fine I said, you wouldn’t believe some of the requests I get 🤣 Turned out not to be that strange, not in my experience anyhow, she was after fertile eggs to incubate, all pretty normal so far 🙄 The embryo would not reach full gestation though as they would be frozen and used to help develop a new scanning system for animals, a cross between an x-ray and a scan, still in 2D but more detailed, I think I got the gist of it. We have fertile quail eggs and duck eggs but not many chicken eggs as our layer flock don’t run with a cockerel I explained. I also explained that what fertile eggs we do have are currently being sat on by broody hens, we went to have a look to see how many they were sat on and guess what, chicks 🐣 they had hatched! She went away with quail and duck eggs and my e-mail and she is going to send me the results of any scans that they get, exciting stuff, she asked how much she owed and I replied, it’s for science, they are free 😀 got to help science along as you never know when you are going to need it yourself.

I had Florence and Josh for a couple of hours this morning while Shelley was busy. She runs an eyebrow/eyelash business from home and has only just been able to start up again after the lockdown and so customers are queuing up. It’s funny really as when she left school she qualified as a beauty therapist but ended up in hotel management for years. It would always be something she could fall back on when she needed to and so once she had Josh and Flo she started up again so that she could work from home, it proved to be a great back up plan 😀

I asked Shelley to pick me up some brandy as she was popping to the shops before coming back here, I think I am going to make some plum brandy, might as well make good use of these plums. It might be a very nice warming, winter tipple if I add some cinnamon as well 🥃 I used the Rumtopf vessel I have as that’s as good as anything, gradually getting through the plums 😋

Plums, Brandy, Sugar, Cinamon, Orange zest, stir and leave for a few months until ready then strain and bottle or drink up 😀

After they went home I went outside to do a bit of weeding and feed the guineas some weeds but although the weather itself is ok the buffeting from the wind is as always pretty exhausting. When Shelley came back to pick the children up she said it’s not that noticeable in town, we definitely notice the weather extremes here because it’s fairly exposed.

I called John to tell him we will need some chick crumb and now I have to work out where they will go, the last mum and babies I moved out because of the holes in the ground if you remember, I don’t want them falling down crevices, not sure where I am going to move them too, I will need to have a good think about it.

I fed the chicks and there are five little yellow fluffy bundles in there 😀

We decided to go shopping, we didn’t need much but had run out of washing up liquid and cheese so off we went. Well I wish I hadn’t bothered, it was hammering down when we left and all the way there, got a soaking getting into the shop to start off with, then of course my glasses steamed up. The whole glasses and mask thing is a pain in the arse, I can’t see the labels clearly without them, they don’t sit on my head (they slip off) and no matter how I adjust the mask they constantly steam up. We were just about done and I remembered that I had forgotten something but I couldn’t think what it was and the bloody music they pipe over the whole place wasn’t helping with my concentration levels. I ended up being so irritated I decided I’m not going again, I will send John with a list and do without whatever I forget to put on it. I know I’m a grumpy cow lol.

Saturday: The weather is a bit on and off today. After doing the animals John got the tractor out to dig a trench for the new border, this will have a low fence to hold the soil in and keep the shingle separate. It was sunny and we were out there discussing the outline when out of nowhere it starting raining, 1st soaking. He got on with that while I went and did some picking, again it was sunny when all of a sudden it started raining, I dived into the poly tunnel before I got a second soaking, by now John was on the tractor digging and he got a soaking lol. No doubt that is how the day will carry on by the looks of things.

We had a busy morning, John on the new border and me sorting out the newly hatched chicks (6) and their Mums. I have moved them into Teds pen, there is a little hut in there and the ground is not full of potential pitfalls for small chicks. Both the mummy hens and the cockerel have been moved along with the chicks. That means Ted will have a new place to sleep tonight and that might be difficult encouraging him to change. I cleaned out Teds pen, sorted out food and water then caught up one hen dusted her for mites, moved her, moved the chicks, then the other hen, dusting her as well, then finally the cockerel giving him a dusting too. Then cleaned out then pen where they had hatched and burnt the bedding, where the hens had been sitting tight and the weather has been hot there were quite a lot of red mite in there, burning gets rid of a vast majority of them. I then used the DE to dust the hatching area and I will leave it a while before cleaning it out completely and giving it a wash down with some jeyes fluid. The pen was never intended for chickens (originally it was for the rabbits) so it’s a bit awkward to clean out. We never intended to have hatchlings, typical, if you had wanted them it wouldn’t have happened and now we have eight including the two that hatched a few weeks back!

While we were both busy patch started yapping incessantly, I could hear John telling him to be quiet but I also knew that the type of yap he was doing meant he was telling us something. Not all lassie like lol, there was no one stuck down a well or anything like that and usually it’s if the horse has got out. I went to investigate and found a large hedgehog, I’m guessing the dogs had disturbed from wherever it was sleeping. I watched it and it was trying to get along the fence line of my garden so I opened the gate and in it went, I turned round to see where it was heading and it was gone, they really moved fast when they want to. I said to John we need to make little hedgehog tunnels so they can move between fenced areas more easily.

Sunday: Another busy morning, the weather has been favourable, for me at least 😜 John got on with the front bed and I did a bit of cutting back in the garden and then some potting on of a few pots of things as well as some pricking out of lupins and huechera seedlings that have grown nicely. After that I went to help John in the front, digging out weeds etc. We are hoping to do the bed without weedkiller which is a pretty big task as it’s very weedy and not just easy to pull weeds either but some real tough rooted ones. I think I have settled on putting flowering shrubs in there and intersperse with some late flowering plants, then scatter some annual seeds for a wispy look. I also have some bulbs which can go for spring interest, hopefully hat will cover all the seasons and be changing all the time. Most of the shrubs I already have growing in pots and once they are in the ground they should tare off pretty quickly provided we can get them in fairly soon.

I took some photos of the flower bed in the veg garden as a few smaller plants have got lost in with the giants, there is a lovely little salmon coloured dahlia that can hardly be seen as it’s behind a much bigger yellow one, all things to consider for rearranging in autumn. The photos are to remind me once the plants have died down, it’s all very well having an idea of what height they grow to but seeing them gives you a much better idea of where to place things.

All looks a bit of a mess as I did just shove it all in this year but come autumn I will re arrange it all a little better 😀

Lunch in the City 😲 plenty of plums & RIP Benny 😢

Monday 3rd August: This morning I whizzed around and got a few things done ( made two banana loaves and a greengage and vanilla tart) before going out for lunch in Oxford with Charlie as a birthday treat. We went to The Alchemist, the food was delicious and it all felt very safe and social distancing was well in hand. I haven’t been to Oxford centre for a least 6 years if not a lot longer. The new shopping centre is light and airy and the rooftop terrace where all the eateries are is a delightful place to eat. Afterwards we went on the tourist trails and into the back streets to find lovely park areas and beautiful architecture. A lovely way to spend an afternoon 🥰

My birthday treat at The Alchemist

When I got back John was already home and had been working on the new fence which is very nearly finished.

Early evening I went out into the paddock John is working in and had a look round. We discovered bees in a hollow of the apple tree, these might be bees that have swarmed and set up home here or they may be native bees but they are definitely honey bees 🐝 happy days, hopefully it will start oozing out lol.

We still have no internet and it’s due to be connected tomorrow, the equipment arrived safely yesterday morning due to the fact that our postie knows everyone so well that he delivers it to the named recipient not the address which is just as well. Trying to bounce off the hot spot on my phone is very tiresome I can tell you and I do find the reliance on the internet more than a little disconcerting. As I have written before in previous blogs, an apocalypse (disaster, pandemic) was always on my radar and one of the worst would be if the internet went down, we would be totally screwed I can tell you that so it would be prudent to look at what you use the connection for and always make sure you have an alternative 🙄 That is self reliance 😀 One other way to make sure you stay connected is the telephone line. We have cordless telephone handsets but I always keep a corded set in the cupboard because if we have a power cut we still have a phone, you may think that’s ok I have my mobile but trust me the amount of time I have no battery when the power goes is nobody’s business 😜

Tuesday: Picking produce was this mornings task, more plums, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, dwarf beans, beetroot, turnips, snowball radish and a few potatoes, I am quite literally drowning in veg lol.

1.30pm and I’m sitting down to give my back a rest lol, I have spent all this time prepping nearly everything I picked this morning. Beans, carrots and turnips chopped and open froze, beetroots and radish peeled and chopped for a few days of salad meals and greengage plums stoned and made into jam. Lots of the veg were weighed and bagged up to go out for sale and I still have Victoria plums to make more jam with but not today 😜

After a short rest I went out and cut back one of my two sage bushes, the leaves are now drying in the dehydrator ready for putting in a jar and using over Winter. The other bush I will leave for now and cut it back later in the season and continue to use the fresh leaves when I need to. John came home just as I had finished and put the kettle on, I swear he must hear it being turned on as his timing is impeccable 🤪

Early evening I had a phone call from our neighbour, we have travellers in the area and they have been doing what they usually do and targeting work vans. They tried to break into her husbands van and when challenged by her Hubby the person lunged at him with a screwdriver, threw a walling brick at him (which missed luckily) and jumped into a waiting car which drove off. There is a serious problem here at the moment and it seems the police are not getting on top of it at all, I have seen reports on Facebook all day of people/vans/businesses being hit in broad daylight 🤬

Wednesday: Phone saga: So this morning I had an email to say we were good to go, I checked the phone, dead, I looked at the hub, red light, not good to go 🙄 I phoned them (another hour on the phone) and they said the line is live, no it’s not I told them. Another transfer to a different department and to cut a long story short we now have to wait until August 14th for an engineer to come out, meanwhile they will send me a 4G mini hub so I don’t have to use data on my phone. Well that’s good because I am using it as a hotspot and that is painful as I have said before, 3G is all we get and that drops out pretty frequently 🤪

When I finally got off the phone to them I thought I ought to try and get some work done. I can’t remember what else I did but I did make six more jars of Victoria plum jam 😀

We had to take Benny to the vet early evening, luckily I had got him in at lunchtime and shut him in. We put him into a carrier and set off, 10 minutes down the road the cat pooped, 🤣🤣🤣 OMG it was hilarious, I thought John was going to be sick, he was actually gagging, he pulled a mask out of the side pocket and put it on and then we found a safe place to pull over. John held the cat while I sorted it out and we went on our way. The upshot is that it looks like he has been clipped by a car and it has put his hip out ‘Ouch’ this is going to be expensive 🙄 he has to go back tomorrow for an X-ray and they will decide if he needs surgery (possibly amputation depending on injury) 😏

Thursday: Funny kind of a morning, it’s warm but as I was out picking plums it’s started a fine misty rain and just as I am typing the this the sun is coming out and I think it is going to be hot 🥵 (10 minutes later it has gone back in again)

John did the rounds and then went off to work with Wonky Benny to drop him at the vets this morning, I do hope he doesn’t poo again as John is on his own this time 😂

First jobs on the list were watering the pots, the tunnels and the greenhouse as the forecast is anywhere up to 30c+ over the next few days. Then making sure the animals all have got plenty of fresh water just in case, they have fresh water anyway but we tend to double up when the weather is very warm. After finding food for the torts it was on to a bit of plum picking, if I told you the trees are dripping with plums it would be no lie, it’s a bumper crop this year right across the varieties. The Victoria tree is always abundant, the greengage not so much, except for this year, the damsons, never seen so many on there and the new tree (the variety escapes me) is also loaded and very tasty they are too.

At this time of year my kitchen just isn’t big enough for all the produce I am bringing in on a daily basis and I always have baskets and trays of it stacked in various corners until I can get round to sorting them out. At the minute I have cooking apples to be sorted as well, the ones that are damaged will be peeled and cooked for the freezer and any that are in good condition will be stored out the back. This is when I could do with some cool storage as the back area heats up quickly due to the tin roof out there. It would be nice to have a little brick built store shed or at least a heavily insulated wooden shed, but I like the brick shed idea better 😀

So what am I going to do with all these plums? Good question 😜 some will be frozen for winter puddings, some will be made into more jam I think, always good for presents or exchanges, some will be given away to family and friends and some will be sold in the shed. In the past I have made plum sauce and plum chutney and if I get the enthusiasm I may do some this year.

As if I didn’t have enough to do I have come up with another job lol, I have ordered Almond oil as a carrier which arrived this morning and I am going to infuse it with lavender as a quick way of making it, I haven’t done it before so it will be interesting to see how it turns out. You can then add the oil to the bath or use it on your skin.

I harvested some lavender and tied it in bunches to dry on the rack in the kitchen ready to use when it has dried out.

The phone rang and it was John, I figured at 11am it’s not good news and I was right. The vet had called him and Benny’s hip socket was smashed to bits, they couldn’t amputate because they would need to remove too much. The next option was a specialist and even then there was no guarantee he would walk again and so John made the decision to put him to sleep which is exactly what I would have done. The vet said she couldn’t believe he had been walking on it and she had never seen any bone that smashed 🙄 So RIP Benny, I am so very sorry that your wonderful life as our farm cat was cut short and I will miss your very vocal presence. I am done with cats for a while, we still have Diesel (who is getting on in years) but we have been through a few other cats over the last few years, they either get hit by cars or disappear never to be seen again! Molly was the only other cat that saw her last few years out here and died peacefully.

Pretty sure patch will miss you annoying him as well 🥰

I am waiting patiently for this 4G mini hub to turn up from BT it comes with a sim and unlimited data until the problem is sorted. I have tried uploading last weeks blog but like the photos there is not enough umph to do it.

We went over to Sams late afternoon and took Mia out for ice cream and a play at the park just to give Sam a bit of a break from three children to two 😂

Friday: Today the temps are set to rise well above 30c not hot for some countries but not what we are used to here in the UK 😜 I opened the windows early to let the cool morning air in and then shut them as the sun came round, closing the curtains at the same time to hopefully keep the worst of the heat out 🙄 I was up early and outside picking first thing, marrow, beans, peas, mangetout, carrots, cauliflower and a bucketful of eating apples from a dwarf tree! As soon as the torts were fed I was off inside to start prepping. The veg have all be cleaned chopped and open froze, and the apples have all been wiped over sorted into perfect and blemished piles. The perfects will store nicely for a few weeks and the blemished (which won’t store well) will be either used in chutney etc or fed to the animals as a treat. The marrow I am undecided about, many people eat stuffed marrow, I can’t see the point personally 😂 my Dad always told me to make marrow rum, your pour rum into the marrow, hang it for a few days and then let the liquid out from the bottom, again I can’t see the pint, just drink the rum! I will say that I have never tasted either of these so I may be missing something wonderful but I somehow doubt it 😜 Why grow the marrows you may ask, I had the seeds, it’s as simple as that, and if nothing else the hens will enjoy a good feast on them 😀 They will store for weeks mind you so I may decide to have a go at a curry or even use them in a chutney, I don’t have to decide just yet.

I have just received notice that my 4G mini hub will be delivered today thank goodness, it’s a hub supplied by BT (when you have connection problems 😂) that has a sim and unlimited data (free of course) so I should then be able to upload pictures etc. Last weeks blog randomly uploaded while I was typing this up, I have been trying to upload it for days and gave up in the end 🙄

I made plum chutney, love a bit of chutney in a cheese sandwich 😀 Apparently the temps at Heathrow are already 31c and it’s only lunchtime, however Charlie has just sent me a video as she is on the way home from Devon and it’s pouring with rain, ah gotta love the extremes of our climate, it’s not like it’s a big island in comparison to some but the difference in weather from one end to another is hilarious sometimes 😁 It’s nearly 1pm and still pretty cool in the house hopefully it will stay that way 🙄

Yay the mini hub arrived, very mini, not much bigger than a business card in size I was expecting something bigger lol. I now have full WiFi signal 😀 hopefully I can now upload photos.

Saturday: Set to be very hot today so we were up early to get a bit done first thing, John went off to get a few and al supplies and order some bits of fencing he was short of. In the afternoon we went over to my brothers for the first real birthday BBQ this year. John came back mid evening to put the birds to bed and then came back and we stayed until late evening with the fire pit lit and watching the stars, lovely day. Luckily there was a lot of shade and a good breeze so it was t too u comfortable.

Sunday: A bit late up today lol, 8am which is late for us. After the feeding rounds John cracked on with the last remaining bit of fencing and I went out to pick plums and do a bit of weeding. It was overcast for a good part of the morning and although it was still warm it gave me a chance to get some things done. Mum and Ken came over after lunch to pick some plums , I gave them a bagful of dwarf beans a marrow to go home with as well. It is at that stage where I have so much produce I either don’t know what to do with it all or I am sick of processing it all so start giving it away by the bagful 😜

Jammin, not the musical kind 😜

I decided to change the theme layout of the blog this week to keep,you on your toes 😋

Monday 2nd September: Oooo we are proper rolling into Autumn now. Dad and Sue enjoyed their week and did some helpful jobs around the place, mowing, picking, weeding etc John was off as well and got a few jobs done, not ones that were on my list for him mind you!

It turned out that mostly, the plums on the Victoria tree were fine so I have been picking those, some were stoned and frozen for winter use and this morning I have made some jars of jam. I love the colour of Victoria jam, a beautiful jewel colour and you know Autumn is just around the corner when you can start the blackberry picking in earnest.

I like whole fruit jams rather than jelly, the latter is made by cooking the fruit then straining it overnight through a jelly bag to get the liquid, if you like seedless then that’s what you would do but firstly I can’t be bothered with the faff and I rather like to use all of the fruit, with the exception of apple, I’m not keen on the texture and so apple jelly is altogether nicer in my opinion.

I have still been regularly picking tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, beetroot, runner beans, carrots, courgettes, raspberries and hybrid blackberries, I keep testing the grapes for sweetness and they are almost ripe, the melons are doing nicely and the pumpkins and spaghetti squash are beginning to ripen.

Last week I dug up my blueberries and repotted them, they have not done well where they are, I don’t know why, but time to move them and see if I can get a better crop from them. This is the time of year to sort out the strawberry beds and so that is on the to do list as are a hundred and one other jobs lol, seed collection, dividing and a bit of planning for next year.

I made a ‘chuck it in’ sauce for the freezer, I used courgette, tomato, celery, garlic, onion, green pepper, carrot, oregano, basil, parsley, salt and pepper. I used what I had that was ripe and ready or needed using up, no particular quantities just what I had available, the tomatoes were blanched and skinned but apart from that everything else was just chopped and chucked, I sweated it off with a bit of avocado oil and then it will simmer gently down in its own juices. With all that in there it can’t fail to taste good, each different batch would of course taste slightly different but I will freeze it and use it for pasta or even as a base for soup in the winter. I always freeze, I have never got round to thinking about canning on a serious level though I probably should some day.

Tuesday: One of the first jobs this morning was to re boil the jam as it didn’t set! Pain in the bum as all the jars need re sterilising etc, it’s done now and looks like a set has been reached, I did throw a lemon in with it to help it on its way. I have a feeling that the fruit has a lot more water content this year than previous years as too much liquid seems to be the problem. I am going to Swindon with Shelley this morning so I will look for a new thermometer as the bubble keeps separating in mine which can’t help much either 🙄

I still have this ridiculous cough, I had it all week while Dad and Sue were here, it is getting better but slowly, last night I was up two or three times and consequently am tired already today and it’s only 9am 😏

While I was in Swindon Mum was here working away on the strawberry bed, I have strawberries all over the place and they need consolidating, the bed also needed raising as the slugs were getting most of them as they were trailing on the floor. This is the right time of year to sort out the strawberries and thin out any old ones and use the new runners as fresh plants.

Wednesday: Rain overnight which is good because the garden needed a sprinkle 😀 I am making more jam this morning 😜 plenty of berries to be picked at the moment and this is mainly blackberry but there are a few raspberries, mulberries, blueberries and a couple of cherries in there too so this is a mixed fruit jam.

This time of year is packed with preparing and storing the harvest, berries, top fruit, veg, nuts it’s an abundant time of year and a busy one. I have a basket full of tomatoes to do something with not quite sure what yet maybe soup, you can’t beat some fresh tomato soup in the depths of winter.

The hens are laying very well now and we have an abundance of eggs 🤪 I also have some pears to use up and when I see the words ‘one bowl, no fuss’ that’s a recipe I know I’m going to love so I made a cinnamon spiced pear cake.

We went over to my brothers after dinner as John had to pipe up a couple of radiators for him, when we got back it had rained again and it felt decidedly wintery 😏 so a good mug of hot chocolate was in order, soon be Hygge time again 😀

Thursday: Sunny but chilly this morning, looks like it will be a nice day though so I got some washing on first thing. Slight problem with that at the moment as a spider has taken up residence in the wash basket 🙄 I tentatively pull clothing out knowing that any minute a 10ft hairy eight legged monster is going to leap out at me 🤪

The wildlife is still abundant round here, each morning when I open the side door around 20/30 sparrows are startled and start flying from bush to bush, it’s quite a sight. They appear to be feeding on the ground in the gravel at the front so bang goes my notion to weedkiller it at the end of the month, I am not really sure what to do, leave it all to grow and mow it?

I watched John for five minutes trying to catch an escaped chicken in vain on his way to his van this morning, I could have gone out and helped but it was much more fun to spectate 😂

Not sure what I am going to do today, that’s the beauty of this place and my life, I can decide in a moment ‘to do or not to do’ I write that glibly as very often a situation arises that needs sorting or something comes up that really can’t wait.

The rabbits and guinea are still on their green diet, I have not bought a bag of hard feed since way back in spring, nor should it be necessary really with all the forage there is available. The kittens are doing well and are right at home here now, we have seen a lot less of them this week mind as Alfie (Sams dog) has been staying and he, for the want of a better word, is a tit 😬 continually chasing the birds, horse, cats, anything that might move and give him a game, the kittens, quite sensibly stay out of the way when he is around. I am keeping a close eye on the torts, they will begin to eat less now the heat has gone out of the ground, they will wind down until it’s time for them to sleep for the winter. If you think about it, it’s half a life, the sensible half mind you in the warmth of Spring and Summer 😀 Everything else is doing well, the three remaining turkeys are growing and occasionally make that gobbling noise which is funny to hear, the light Sussex are getting to the point where we will have to do what was intended with them 🙄 the laying hens are laying well and we have plenty of eggs available every day, just the young ducks that are slacking and still have not produced a single egg between them yet 😏

I went out and did a bit of picking, mainly courgettes 😂 they grow like weeds! I don’t even eat them but they sell well and if they get too big the chickens love them 😀 I had a pot of agapanthus that came from Johns Mums and it was well and truly pot bound so I have divided it up into about seven new plants, now is a good time to do it, when they have gone over agapanthus need deadheading and feeding for six weeks according to Monty Don so splitting them and putting them into fresh compost will serve them well hopefully.

The wind is still cold and I feel a bit tired today which in turn makes me despondent 😭 gets me wondering, why I am doing all this, what/who am I doing it for? Shall I cut back massively but I know it’s just today and tomorrow if it’s warm and I feel good I will be back on track 😀 When we started this journey the Lupus was not even on the radar and I was used to hard graft, in our previous house I had not only dug out the footings for a very large extension with only a jack hammer to aid me but completely transformed a large mostly lawned garden into a wonderful space with interest and abundance. The garden was opened once a year for viewing to aid a local charity and that meant being on top of things all the time, when we moved here the momentum to achieve something great was intensified but year by year it waned until I was so poorly that my system completely collapsed and another chapter in my life began, living with Lupus 🙄 However, I am not and never have been a quitter, always in it for the long haul and I still am but days like these when I am too tired to motivate myself leave me wondering, how about a small house and garden, lots of holidays and free time lol.

I found a little bit of energy later in the afternoon to do the egg collecting and feeding and a few other little jobs, the sun was shinning and the wind had dropped so it was quite lovely outside. Part of the tiredness is a this bloody stupid cough I have got, I have to sleep practically sitting up and wake up coughing a couple of times a night so it’s no wonder really but it is getting slowly better.

Friday: We were up late and so it was me doing the animal rounds this morning, John has been doing it for ages and doing a sterling job. I’m not complaining 🙄 about his routine but……the birds have been getting away with murder, well not murder exactly 😜 but they have been left to become a bit delinquent, so this morning I reigned in some control 😮 Not just let out to run wild but kept in to eat and drink before being let out to run wild 😂

Then onto a good few hours work in the fruit cage, pruning, cutting back, trying to dig up stinging nettles, until my legs felt like jelly, I haven’t done that much hard work for a long while 😀

I had to reach into the back of the wardrobe this afternoon, no door to Narnia in there but there was a long woolly cardi with my name on it 🥶 I can’t quite believe that just over two weeks ago the temperatures were so high, it’s like a roller coaster ride, slow ride to the top then whooosh we are hurtling headlong into Winter in a split second, that’s a temperate climate for you, bloody temperamental it should be called 😏 Now I am sporting a very fetching look of long cardigan with my gillet over the top for no other reason than I love my gillet and can’t let go of it just yet 🤣

Saturday: More work in the fruit cage and Mum came to help so we got it all done, looks a whole lot tidier and more manageable now, I have put a fair bit of weed membrane down on the side that is troubled with stinging nettles and bindweed I fed all the raspberries in the pots, I was going to put them in the ground but that’s a whole lot of work and they spread like crazy so I decided to leave them in the pots and look after them a bit better 😜 I harvested a load of carrots, I intend to make some tomato soup so will need some for that but the rest will be prepped for the freezer. Then I picked some blackberries and open froze them for using later and then a sandwich and a sit down, got to conserve energy as I have Josh and Flo this afternoon and overnight while Shelley and Martin go to a wedding lol, and we are taking the kids with us to an 18th birthday bbq 🤪

Sunday: Pretty much a non day for me on the smallholding, I stayed over at Shelleys with the grandchildren last night so John was in charge all day 😀

Visitors, busy week, lots done 😀

Monday 3rd September 😝 What, September already! A busy morning this morning, John is home this week, and by that I mean not going out to do plumbing work, I would say he is not working but he still has to work for his supper here 🤪 We do however have some help this week so they got an early start on the mountain of wood that needs cutting up and stacking away. We don’t usually say no to free wood but we have got so much at the minute we can hardly move, if we have a cold winter then we will be totally grateful, to be honest I think we have enough for about 3 winters at the minute. I will be both looking forward to lighting the Rayburn and dreading it lol, once it’s going full time I will spend a lot of my time feeding it but in return we have FREE hot water, cooking, heating and washing drying facilities so I can’t complain 😀

The other thing happening today is Dad and Sue arriving to stay until the weekend so plenty of preparations in the way of good food, the bread is proving, the veg and meat are prepped for dinner later, the ham is in the oven cooking ready for lunchtime sarnies, they both appreciate good, home grown, home cooked food and so it’s a pleasure to provide the very best of what we have to offer, just need to make apple pie and I’m sorted 😀

Tuesday: Blimey it’s a hive of industry here today, I kid you not, John and his helper are working flat out on the wood mountain, Dad is busy on the ride on lawn mower cutting the paddocks, Sue is out picking vegetables. We have had numerous deliveries and egg customers and I have Mia so it’s been chaotic at times but all very productive indeed 😀 I have been busy on a never ending round of coffees and teas, sausage sarnies and lunch I am definitely going to need that holiday next week 🤪

I have powdery mildew on the summer squash, these were a heritage variety and that’s probably why they are heritage so maybe I will stick to newer resistant varieties in future 😜 The butternut squash are ready to harvest and it looks like the melons are on the turn too, the hazelnuts have begun dropping so Mia and I have been collecting some of those and the Miribelle plums are just about ready to pick though I have only had time to pick a few so far, they are very tasty and nice firm plums, not as many with maggot as I had first thought so that’s a bonus. I still have cooking apples to pick from the tree, I managed to get all the lower ones and need a hop up to get the rest down. We had a good downpour yesterday so that has spurred on the courgettes which are still producing well.

More harvesting in the afternoon, Sue picked the butternut squash about 13 of them she thinks, I got the broccoli that she picked in the morning blanched and frozen, then after Mia went home we had fish and chips and Dad, Sue and John had an early night (all worn out lol) while I had to stay up and bake some more bread!

Wednesday: If it was busy yesterday, it’s even busier today! The sun is shinning beautifully, Dad was up early and out on the mower, John and his helper are out on the wood pile, it’s gone from a mountain to a pile now 😜 Mum also came up and did some sorting out in the garden, the powdery mildew foliage etc and some more potting up and potting on including the poor peris which has been in the same pot for at least 20 years! I have been feeding, watering, collecting eggs, putting them out for sale along with some veg and plums, putting on wash loads and hanging them out to dry, making breakfast and umpteen coffees, picked a bucketful of plums and prepped some pears for the freezer, I feel exhausted already and it’s only 10am! Sue is up the ladder as I type picking the rest of the cooking apples, I may have to make this a yearly event 😀

I have the consultant this afternoon so a trip to Oxford, goodness knows what time we will get back it depends on the traffic which is usually diabolical.

Well that was a successful consultation, they agreed with what I thought was still going on and have increased my meds so that should knock the last bit of activity on the head hopefully, although I’m back to fortnightly blood tests it’s a small inconvenience I can put up with.

Sue had the dinner under control by the time we got back (cottage pie) so I can relax this evening 😀

Thursday: Sunny again although much cooler first thing and another hugely busy day, Dad has carried on topping the fields where he can, some of it has not been grazed and is long and wet, the horse will have to graze that bit off I think, John sharpened the blade first thing so he could get going. Sue has been helping John and I get the new hut ready with electric fencing, Dad and John moved it into position with the tractor last night. She has also been up the apple tree picking again 😀 John has been busy with his helper and the side area is nearly clear of wood and debris 😀 I have no idea what I have been doing mostly running around like a blue arsed fly 🤪 Then John went to power wash the pen where the POL that are arriving this afternoon will live and it’s FULL of red mite, so they won’t be going in there after all, he had to quickly do a bit of creosoting to try and contain them. Honestly it really makes you want to throw in the towel! We had to search for the Apple picker before Sue could start again today as she couldn’t remember where she put it, eventually we found it up the tree 🤣🤣🤣 And like my writing today my head is all over the place 🤪🤪🤪

And then the chickens arrived on time at 3pm. I also have Mia today for a few hours, I don’t normally on a Thursday it’s a one off but luckily she was fairly tired and had a sleep for a couple of hours, Shelley, Josh and Flo popped in and made a few cups of tea, Josh helped me with the egg collecting and feeding.

Friday: Sunny but chilly this morning, there is a cold breeze. Dad and Sue are having a day off from working today lol, they came for a holiday and have been working every day, I think they have enjoyed it though. Johns helper is on his last day and the side is nearly clear 😀 John had to pop out first thing to do a job that was outstanding but he is back now and straight back at it. The new chickens have come out of the hut this morning, not sure what they make of it all, hopefully they love it enough to start laying soon. I have been busy doing the usual feeding and putting veg and fruit out for sale, bacon sarnies, coffee etc etc. I really need to think about packing as we are off on Sunday morning but there are lists to write and things to tidy up as well before we go.

Yesterday I came across a notification about new a animal license law which comes into effect on 1st October apparently you need to have a license to sell animals, including birds, if you are running it as a business. Not sure what happens if you don’t have internet access because I did not know about it through any other means than Facebook! Anyhow we have decided to stop selling hens as it will cost to buy the license and the act is 96 pages long, I only got to page 30 something and thought, bugger that, I can do without the hassle 😀 It’s a shame because it won’t stop the puppy farms etc all it will do is cost more for the people who do it properly anyway or make them give up because it’s too much paperwork for the small amount you are selling.

I decided, after watching a programme about learning a new language and it helping your brain, that I would learn Spanish lol, I found a great little app, and it’s surprising how much I recognise just from travelling and life in general I suppose, I will be able to practice some of it next week hopefully 😀

Saturday: Raining this morning but that’s ok as we have worked hard outside all week. Dad and Sue had breakfast and then left to return to Wales which some bags of goodies for their hard work, jam, chutney, plums, beans and potatoes, John did the feeding then went to sort his Mum out, I did the orchard lot then waved Sue and Dad off and then did a quick hoover round and change bedsheets before starting with the packing 😝

In the days before the smallholding the routine was take the dogs to the kennels and then go 😀 these days I have to spend time making sure everything is in order and everyone knows what they need to do, it takes quite some organising so that whoever is left in charge can run the place as smoothly as possible, no doubt they are more than capable and I need not worry, indeed I shall not be 🤪

So it’s over and out for this week and Hola to Spain, plenty of relaxation, great food and a bevvy or two.
