Sunshine ☀️ a vaccine & finally some gardening.

Monday 22nd February 2021: Just like that in a blink of an eye it’s Monday again. Another drizzly, grey morning, still quite mild for the time of year though. I do wish the weather would turn a little drier though, and if the sun could make an appearance that would be great. It seems like I am always wishing for different weather and generally I am, my ideal would be a dry sunny day of around 18c with rain overnight just in case anyone is listening and can do that for me 😜

John is working again this week and he did the rounds before he left. I sorted out the eggs, the hens are laying like crazy and we have plenty of them to try and shift. I did a few routine household bits and also phoned the septic tank company to get ours emptied, it did not get done last year due to covid so I really need it done this year to prevent any problems.

After chatting with our youngest daughter, Charlotte, I might have more of a go at growing micro greens. She is having a go at doing them for herself and she asked me what kind of seeds she needed to do it, I have plenty of spare seeds so I gave her a selection to get her going. It started me thinking that this would be a fairly easy way to grow a crop of tasty nutritious food, I just need to see if I can find a bulk seed company, buying the small packets is fine if you are doing it for yourself but on a bigger scale I need bigger quantities of seed to make it worthwhile. I have got pea shoots and garlic chives on the go for myself as mini salad leaves but the choice is huge really and so I think I am missing a trick here.

I take back what I said about it being mild, I went out to the greenhouse to do a couple of bits and to check on plants and it is colder than yesterday I think. I did organise a punnet of micro salad greens which are now on the kitchen window sill along with some peas that are just sat in the punnet, no compost, I have wetted the both of them and we will see how they get on. The peas I did in the greenhouse (which were in compost) have already started to rot, it’s just too cold for them at the minute, if at first you don’t succeed try something else 😆 The broad beans are coming up though and funnily enough the peas in the root trainers are too just not the ones in a seed tray 🤷‍♀️ too much moisture and too cold I think.

John came home just after lunch, I never know if I am coming or going theses days, I thought he was out for the day so was just hoovering the floors ready to give them a wash but that scuppered my plans. The reason becomes obvious when he is eating and drops some of it on the floor, why bother 😜

Boris set out the journey we are to take to come out of this long lockdown, it’s not quick but by 21st June we should be totally restriction free providing all goes well. On the downside it means that Charlotte and Maccas wedding will not go ahead on May 7th and restrictions will still be in place 😞 We will see if they are able to move it to later in the the year.

Tuesday: Not a bad day, slight frost to begin with but it soon warmed up a bit, grey and overcast mostly and windy but no rain 😀 John did the animals then went off to do a job, I got on with a bit of weeding and then moving some pots to clear the area where the next bed is going out the front. John came back and we carried on clearing the area, there were bags of compost, empty pots, pots with plants in, bit of debris etc etc and a pile of slabs. We cleared everything but the slabs and then set about giving the hazel trees a good prune, we didn’t do them last year and they have got a bit big and unruly. Now they are all cut nice and neatly, the branches all shredded and put back under the trees to put goodness back into the ground and give the mini beasts some cover. That pretty much took us well into the afternoon, the some lunch, a sit down, light the Rayburn, do the afternoon rounds and that’s another day over.

It will be March next week and that’s when many more seeds can be sown, I need to start in earnest making sure the beds are ready. I still have some flowers growing in some of them, once I can work out exactly what they are I will start transplanting them. We start the final bed out in the front area tomorrow, a smaller bed in a triangle shape, I am thinking this will be roses and romantic flowers like bleeding hearts, creeping phlox and agapanthus but I need to plan it properly first.

Wednesday: Blowy, grey, overcast, but not raining and fairly mild. John did the animals then went off to do a job and also pick up some sleepers for this last bed in the front area. It will be nice to get that done and I may have to have a trip to the garden centre to find some nice things to put in there.

This morning I have been preoccupied with a chance discovery, the pieces of the jigsaw fell into place as it were. I can’t prove a thing but it all makes sense to me, I am talking about the theft of the honesty box and money before Christmas. This is what I think, we had a delivery two weeks or so previous to the theft, the delivery driver and his appearance and van rang alarm bells (your intuition is high when you live rurally on a farm, you recognise certain traits 🙄) When I went to the gate and realised it was a delivery I felt a little better, however I thought I recognised the driver from way, way back, I had said to John at the time, I reckon that was ….. but I couldn’t be sure. The person in question didn’t always lead a static life shall we say, except when incarcerated at her majesty’s pleasure. Two weeks later when we were out for about three hours we returned home to find the honesty box and contents ripped from the shed, there was also a delivery in the shed. At the time John said I reckon it was the delivery person but we had no cctv evidence and no way to prove anything. Then this morning a post on Facebook which made me look at the profile more closely and there is the delivery driver that came here! It was who I thought it was, as I say I can’t prove a thing but it’s all a bit coincidental in my eyes.

It’s mid afternoon and we have spent till now working out on the front area, I did a lot of weeding in the first bed and I have a couch grass problem there that I need to bring under control. John and I have moved slabs, positioned sleepers and started building the bed. Shelley came to get her food from the freezer now hers has been fixed and Sam came with the kids so they all played in the front paddock to run off some steam and get some fresh air. Indoors at 2 for lunch and to light the Rayburn, we’d to be on target this afternoon with jobs and dinner as I have my vaccination early evening 😀

The first bed is looking good, I mean it’s still a bit dead due to the time of year but I can see things beginning to bud and grow, the bulbs I planted have all come up, crocus, snowdrops and tête-à-tête, only a few this year but year on year they will multiply and it will look amazing. I need to wait and see how well the areas are filled with what I have already planted, the temptation is to cram a lot in but I really want space for plants/shrubs to look their very best. Each bed will have a different character and the first one is full of flowering shrubs and bulbs, fragrant, berries and plenty of nectar for the bees.

Thursday: Well it’s 2pm and so far I have had no side effects from my vaccine last night, hopefully it will stay that way. John did the animals this morning and then went to do a little job but was back by 10am. We got started out the front again, I added an extra job to Johns list of beds 😜 About two years ago or whenever it was he put up the new front fence, I made a temporary bed in front of the fence. By temporary I mean pots of flowers all stood behind a piece of wood 😂 This morning I asked nicely if we could perhaps make it into a permanent one, it didn’t actually take long, we had the materials, plants and top soil to do the job. Around an hour or so later it was ready for me to take the plants out of the pots and plant them in the bed, hopefully it will look lovely in a few weeks time. The beds will save me a lot of time watering, when things are in pots they dry out very quickly, with the beds a good soaking once a week should be adequate.

Oh and the weather was beautiful 🤩 sunny, mild, dry practically perfect.

It is so nice to have flowers I have waited a long time to have proper flower beds again and the reward today was watching the bees feeding on the crocus 🐝 and he cat trying to catch the bees in mid air 😂

We have moved down from alert level 5 to alert level 4 today, a good sign that things are going in the right direction and the pressure on the NHS has eased somewhat, it hasn’t gone but it’s good news.

Friday: Gorgeous morning, frosty start then lovely sunshine ☀️ I had planned to get out on the veg garden but I woke up with a rash this morning, arms and chest, not sure if this is the vaccine or being in the sun yesterday so I figured I better avoid it today. That leaves housework, oh joy 😜 Gave the bedroom a good clean, pull out the bed and dust everything within an inch of its life, then wash the floors in the living room and kitchen. I did think about doing more than that but the momentum left me 😆

Watching the birds at the seed feeder this morning I spotted one I haven’t seen before, a coal tit, it’s quick and I barely managed to get a pic of it but I am chuffed we have another new type of garden bird around 😀

John was back and forth between jobs today and I mainly pottered around not achieving very much, bit tired today and I have learned that when tired don’t do too much, I have the luxury of being able to do that I know but I still think it’s sound advice I give myself 😜

Valentine’s 💘 goose eggs & seed sowing begins.

Monday 15th February 2021: I am feeling more optimistic this morning about the weeks ahead, I think the weather really does have an effect on my moods and outlook. Today it is much milder, yes we have had rain and yes that is a pain going straight from a frozen solid week to a soggy one but everything feels a little lighter today. John has a full week at work this week so I will mostly be here by myself for the best part of the daytime but he did do the animals before he went this morning which means I can get on and get some things done indoors. I started off by changing the bedsheets and some washing, everybody loves clean sheets day don’t they lol.

Valentine’s Day is the day traditionally that geese start to lay and lo and behold we had the first goose egg of the season yesterday 🥰 it is a short season and by mid May they will have stopped or they will be sitting one or the other. We never have much luck with them sitting and hatching naturally, they always end up kicking eggs out of the nest. This year I think I am going to house them in a stable and let them free range, this will be after the hens are allowed back out of course. The stable will have much more room, one of the problems is that there are usually three geese trying to nest in a small space which is problematic, hopefully more space will help that situation but we will see. I would be nice to have goslings wandering around the place. It is one of those weird things in life that mean most of the domestic geese around the country begin to lay on the same day, I can’t explain it, I doubt if anyone else can either but they are pretty accurate in their timing 🤷‍♀️

Yesterday evening I started doing a bit on my online beekeeping course, I have chosen to look firstly at modern beekeeping methods which is what most people practice. However the more I learn the less I like it, it is basically farming whereas I would prefer the bees to live a natural life and so I will also be looking at natural beekeeping methods. The difference is that the bees are allowed to live as naturally as possible and you only harvest honey if there is enough for the bees to live on during the winter, if here isn’t you don’t have honey. As it takes a lifetime for a bee to produce a tiny drop of honey I think this is only fair really, there are a few other things that I am not keen on, wing clipping and generally suppressing the hive so that it doesn’t swarm. You know me by now and I prefer all things to have as natural life as possible I mean nature knows best doesn’t it and I would rather keep bees for pollination and survival purposes rather than harvesting lots of honey although a smidge of it would be nice now and again. Bees are fascinating creatures, even if you are not thinking of keeping them I would urge you to read up about them and their life it is amazing stuff. I will keep you posted on the topic and let you know what I decided, I am hoping that my tree bees will have survived the winter, I haven’t seen any sign of them yet but I will keep an eye out for them. It will be a major win if they have, proving that they can manage rather than be managed.

I went out and did a bit outside, planted the silver birch, I will get a picture in the spring as it’s basically a dead stick at the minute 🙄 John came home because the materials for the job were wrong so he concreted in some of the posts for the fence and then got called out to take a radiator off. The sun came out and it was really warm, the temperatures are forecast to be around 15c next weekend lol talk about a swing. I had a walk round and made some good observations on what needs doing but I felt it was t quite the right time just yet. You get a feel for when is a good time to start things and when it’s too early, either that or I am being lazy 😜 no seriously though I found a couple of big pots of bulbs growing but the soil is still frozen beneath the surface layer so it will have to wait for a few days more I think. I would have got and weeded that front bed but with the rain straight after the frost I don’t think that’s a good idea, looks like I will have a lot to do next weekend instead. One thing I have realised is that I don’t like working when I am encumbered with a winter coat on, the less layers I have to wear the better I work, I think he winter coat is heavy and it makes me a bit sluggish so roll on some nicer weather when I only need thin layers. I checked the greenhouse out, everything needed a bit of water but on the whole most things have survived well even that last week of extreme cold. The orange and lemon tree look a little worse for wear, they need some water but I will wait for warmer temps before I do that, I don’t want to water them and then if it gets cold again the soil freezes, better for the roots to just be dry than frozen. I had a good look round to see where these pallet collars will go and I think some major reorganisation needs to happen but again I can’t do that while the ground is still a bit frozen. I am looking forward to getting going once conditions are right though, bring on the growing season 😀

I did go out and do a bit more in the greenhouse as it’s such a lovely day I didn’t want to waste it. I did a bit of tidying and brushing off, pulled off dead leaves that sort of thing. There has been a mouse in there so I have put some grain down to see if it’s still there or not, if it is I need to get it gone before I start seed sowing in earnest. I did try and pull some weeds in the garden but the ground is still frozen underneath, I should have listened to my inner self really. I decided to come in and light the Rayburn and get a loaf of bread on the go before having some lunch and a quick sit down.

As I had some bread on the go I decided to make some cheese as well, not a snap decision, I had bought some milk when I went shopping the other day specifically to have a go. If you have some milk that you need to use up it worth thinking about making cheese, not a complicated process and in fact ‘farmers cheese’ is a simple thing to do with ingredients you probably have in the cupboard. Gently heat the milk in a thick bottomed pan, when it begins to froth and bubble (but not boil) take it off the heat and add white vinegar, this splits the milk into curds and whey. All you do is drain the curds, I use muslin (you can buy the organic baby ones which work great) then add salt and any flavour you want, chives, thyme, minced garlic, the options are endless. Squeeze all the liquid out and then shape it on a plate and weight it down with another plate. Thats it, simple enough and a great skill to have up your sleeve. The whey can be used in bread making or other recipes and the cheese will keep for a week in the fridge or can be frozen for use in recipes later. I think a slice of fresh bread and some freshly made soft cheese will make a delicious supper. I actually added salt and pepper to mine, I have a thing for pepper at the minute, no idea why but I tend to listen to my body, if it wants pepper, it gets pepper 😜

Tuesday: At last a day when I can get outside and get busy, and that’s exactly what I did. John did the animals first thing and then started on some more of the drive way area. When I had done indoor stuff I came out and planted the seven cherry plum trees, this is easier than it sounds as they are small whips and so pushing a spade in the ground and making a slit is all that is required for these. Then I spent the morning planting things in the new raised bed, this included digging some stuff up from elsewhere (those that I could recognise at the minute) After that I started on the fruit cage and cut back all the autumn fruiting raspberry canes and some weeding in the fruit cage. After that I went on to the very back bed to sort that out, this is quite a big job, it has a dual pear tree, a cherry tree, an apple, a mulberry and then four gooseberry bushes and three blackcurrant. Over time the gooseberries and blackcurrants have got a bit out of hand so I started by cutting them right back, this will mean no fruit this year from them but that’s fine we have plenty in the freezer from last year still. One of the currant bushes has a horse chestnut tree sapling growing through it so that will need to be dug up and detangled before replanting the bush. There is also a golden hop that has also got a bit out of hand and is spreading everywhere, I wouldn’t mind if it grew along the fence but it keeps choking the fruit trees so I have been trying to dig it out but it’s quite hard work. I haven’t quite decided wether I should completely dig the gooseberries out or not yet, they make it difficult to pick the top fruit as some of the thorns are wicked. I am glad I have a plan now though, that bed is the one that gets all the sun from early morning until evening which means it is a bed I have trouble getting to in the summer months, it is also a bed that will need no attention once I have cleared and cleaned it up so a good place to start I think. It is also the very back bed so I can work methodically towards the front end which will help when I am deciding what job to tackle, otherwise I tend to wander aimlessly from job to job and that never looks like I have achieved much.

I have some really tasty yellow raspberries ‘Autumn Gold’ if you get the chance to try some then do they are sweeter than red ones, I am hoping to divide my plants this year so I have even more of them to harvest later in the year. At the moment they are in pots but I am thinking of making a bed just for these in the fruit cage.

A bonus today is that I don’t have to cook dinner, the bad part of the story is that Shelley’s freezer has broken and so she is having to cook off some of her food including some pork, so tonight we will be picking up a takeaway roast from Shelley’s 😀 She has been able to put some of it in our freezer until hers gets fixed so it’s not too bad, she also made some crumbles and a curries and she has kindly given some to us 🥰

I did think that I would go back outside after stopping for a cuppa at 2.30pm but I think I should take it slowly, after a winter of not doing much I don’t want to over do it and burn myself out. The weather is looking fair for most of the week and positively tropic at the weekend so there will be plenty of time to get stuff done.

There is a rodent of some sort in the greenhouse as all the grain I put down yesterday is gone, I think it is living in with the hibernating torts 🙄 I have set a trap to try and catch it otherwise I won’t be able to sow any pea or bean seeds as they will get eaten. Thinking about the torts, the weekend temperatures that are forecast will probably wake them up so I had a quick look over their outdoor pen and I need to get their out door house ready, some of the hens have been using it over winter in the pol pen. While I was weeding I decided to leave any dandelions where they are for now as I can dig them up for feeding to the torts once they are awake.

John went out to do the afternoon rounds and the heavens opened, he was not happy 😆 but I am as it means anything I have planted today will get a good watering in 😀

Of course it is pancake day today and when the girls were at home I always made pancakes for tea. John doesn’t like pancakes though 🙄 so I didn’t bother today but maybe I will make some for my dessert tomorrow.

Wednesday: John has gone to do a full days work today but he did the animals first. I was not far behind him out on the smallholding, putting in fresh bedding for the ducks, geese and Ted, feeding the Guineas etc. Then I went into the greenhouse for about an hour and a half to get some early seeds sown. The peas and beans that were sown a couple of weeks back are starting to show some shoots and I sowed another couple of batches of peas, we are talking about eight at a time as I don’t want to suddenly have so many that I can’t deal with them. That is one of the restraints you have to place on yourself, not sowing too much at once. This morning I have set up the propagator and have sown, peppers, jalapeño and tomatoes, these all need a long growing period. If you are thinking of getting yours in make sure you will be able to accommodate them with extra heat as they get bigger, the temptation to sow lots of seeds quickly turns into a disaster when the plants are much bigger and you have nowhere warm to bring them on. I have three varieties of tomato in at the minute, indigo cherry which are like the indigo rose only smaller, then some tigerello which are stripy tomatoes and then some yellow cherry tomatoes. I have also sown some garlic chives, dill and coriander, the garlic chives are for adding to pea shoots for salads.

You may notice the shiny stuff behind the propagator, this is to reflect as much light as possible back towards it because the light levels are low at this time of year. I do need to get on and clean the windows of the greenhouse which will help immensely 😜

After a cup of coffee at 10.30, the time is relevant because I find each day without even looking at a clock, I come in for coffee and it’s always around 10.30 🤷‍♀️ Anyway after the coffee I went back outside until 1pm and did a good mornings work I think. First I started with following my plan of yesterday but the soil was claggy, I got as much as I could done before giving up, I had thick layers of mud in my boots, the fork handle and my gloves, on to plan B. I did find a little gooseberry bush growing (self set) so dug that, put it in a big pot and will grow it in the fruit cage where I can prune it more easily. Plan B was to work at the opposite end of the garden to what I had decided yesterday and weed the herb bed, that’s what I spent the rest of the morning doing. The feverfew although it is a herb, is a pain and spreads everywhere so I pulled it all up from there, there are nettles that are growing so they got pulled up as well, it’s very satisfying pulling out a long root of nettle I think, there were plenty of dandelions that thought they were going to make it, nope, out they came and I ended up with a wheelbarrow full of weeds and debris. I did find a couple of ladybirds hibernating so I relocated them to the greenhouse and the beginning of my ladybird empire 😂 1pm and it’s lunchtime and time for an hours sit down before lighting the Rayburn, sorting out dinner for this evening and today it’s my job to do the afternoon feeding and egg collecting. I am pretty pleased with what I have got done out there today, the weather makes such a difference as it was very pleasant, a small amount of rain at one point but nothing major, hopefully there will be plenty more days ahead to get working after a long winter.

Good call coming in and staying in as it is now raining quite well 😜 might do a bit of research or reading for an hour.

So my afternoon panned out rather differently than expected, my good old friends BT and I spent two hours chatting and figuring out why my internet keeps dropping out, apparently an engineer is coming tomorrow 🙄

And I got the call up for my vaccine yaaaaaaaay, next week I will have my first vaccination, it’s amazing actually how emotional it was to get the text, I think it signals the beginning of the end, we have a long way to go still but hopefully at some point this year things will be as near normal as we can get.

Thursday: Oooo an altogether different morning, wet, grey and breezy, not very nice, I am glad I got out on the garden when I could this week. It is still mild though, last night it was around 11c at 9pm 🙄 Looks like today I will mostly be doing indoors stuff 😜

Did some hoovering and polishing, the sun came out in the afternoon but it is a chilly breeze. By that time I was waiting for a cake to cook and getting the Rayburn lit. Take two black bananas, and two overripe pears, mix with some flour, sugar, oil, eggs and chocolate chips and voila something lovely from something not so appetising 😀

BT turned up as they said they would so that’s a bonus, tested everything this end, no faults with equipment so it must be a fault somewhere on the line in the lane 🙄 Internet is still dropping in and out constantly, I reported the same fault last month and they supposedly came out and fixed it, not so well or they wouldn’t be back again would they. Hopefully this time they will do a proper job and sort it once and for all, we had the gigaclear installed through the village a couple of years ago, I might see how much that is or I even considered satellite internet at one point, rural broadband is not the best I can tell you.

After the broadband appeared to be fixed properly, no more drop outs, the rest of the afternoon and early evening went along as usual. We settled down to watch some tv and boom the power went, after establishing it was not anything here that had tripped I called the power company. They had a main cable down and it would be two hours before they could get it back on, darn it, luckily I had charged everything I needed and also the mini hub that BT gave me is a unit you charge so I still had internet and I still had a device 😀 Just as well because I wanted to watch the robot landing on Mars. The power did not come back on after two hours so we went to bed, it came on at 1am 😜 We have on average around four power cuts a year nearly always in the winter months, so we have got used to being prepared, keeping essentials like phone and torches charged and if push came to shove we could always light a campfire to cook dinner and boil a kettle on. I am just glad the power cut was not last week as we would have been freezing 🥶

Friday 😀 Happy Friday everyone, the electric is back on this morning which means we can have cwaffee 🥰 that is good, a morning without coffee is a miserable morning.

It is what is known as a filthy day today, rain on and off all day, wind, grey, altogether ‘orrible 😜 So for the main part I have been making cards, I had some that had been ordered and then I made a few birthday cards as well. Sitting in my little workspace with the radiator on was lovely but I forgot about the rest of the house and when I came out it was cold so I got the Rayburn lit just after lunch. I did the feeding and egg collecting this afternoon, first I had to get a few wheelbarrows of wood from the outside store to the inside area, then on to do the rounds. I noticed the gate to the goose paddock was open, this meant one of two things, either John had forgotten to let them out or he had not shut the gate properly this morning. As I walked up there the tell tale signs of goose footprints told me they were out somewhere, that was ok though as it meant I could get into the nest and retrieve the eggs without having to watch my back! Fed the horses, fed everything else, collected the eggs, got the wood in, got the post in and checked the egg shed ☑️ time for a cuppa ☕️

Saturday: A much better day today, grey and overcast cast but mild and dry. The last couple of weeks of February and the whole of March are the long hard slog towards Spring, it’s almost like you have done a very, very long walk and the last bit is up a steep hill that is wet and muddy, you have to keep going, it’s the end of a difficult journey 😜

We spent the morning cleaning out huts and tidying up paddocks ready for Spring. I cleaned out the ducks, the quail hut, the pol pen, new bedding in the goose hut, cleaned out teds pen, some empty houses etc and John tidied things away from the front paddock, netting that we had taken down and then power washed the front hen hut ready for when they are allowed back out again. We had planned more but decided did we needed to get a bit of shopping in so went off to do that, the jobs will wait until tomorrow.

Today is my youngest sisters 40th birthday 🥳 I was sixteen when she was born, it’s crazy that I had lived a whole childhood before she even came along 😂

Sunday: Oh what a morning we have had, weather is ok, still grey but mild and not raining, well spitting now and again but nothing much. Last night we couldn’t find one of the cats so we left the cat flap undone hoping he would be there this morning, nope. He was there last night at around 7/8 but by 10 he wasn’t, we looked all around, in sheds and outbuildings, I opened Johns van, we called him, nothing. We got on with the morning jobs and then went out the the side paddock, taking down chicken netting, stakes etc and then opened it up for the horses to come into. They have been hanging near the fence for a couple of days, they can see and smell the grass growing and it wouldn’t be long before they bashed the fence down to get in so easier to get it sorted before they take matters into their own hands. After that we came in for a coffee and then John had to go and give his van a bit of a tidy out while I cleaned out the Rayburn ready to light it. John opened the door of the van and guess who jumped out, the cat, why it didn’t come this morning when I looked in there and called it I don’t know but I am glad he is found and safe. I was convinced that as it had just vanished that the fox had taken him but all’s weep that ends well.

I saw a little Jenny wren gathering feathers for nesting this morning, wrens are the most common breeding bird in the UK but they are very quick and tend to keep low to the ground when they are about.

I caught another mouse in the trap in the greenhouse, that’s three so far 🙄 must be a whole colony living in there!

Tomorrow we get an update on how the country will begin to come out of the lockdown, I think it will be a lot slower than people are hoping 🙄

Christmas is coming, covid is still here & thieving gits!

Monday 14th December 2020: Good morning everyone, did you spot my error on last weeks blog? I forgot to finish the title off and just left it hanging so apologies for that 😝

Not a bad start to the day early on, John was off today (kind of) and we had one particular job to get done and that was the office. So I did the morning rounds while he went off with his cutting list to the local merchant, when he got back we set about altering the desk we had already (a big heavy double ended desk) to fit the nook we intended it to go in. Then got all the panels in place, they had to all come back out because something wasn’t square 🙄 I left him to it while I went with Samantha to help her do her weekly shop, this is harder than you think and had both the checkout lady and I in fits of laughter. Firstly going shopping with one toddler is enough but with two in a trolley the isles become obstacle courses, you have to stay in the middle of the isle otherwise arms from each side grab at goods on the shelf. Once the trolley begins to fill up their interest turns from the shelves to the trolley and what they can reach, my job was to try and keep them entertained (distracted basically) by the time Sam is packing the shopping away and trying to pay they have turned around just enough to start pulling things out of the bags, crisps, bag of peppers etc and throwing on the floor, by the time I had picked up one lot the other had grabbed something and thrown that on the floor, you wouldn’t believe that the seemingly quick job of paying at the checkout is long enough for mayhem to ensue, still, Sam said, at least this week there were no little nibble marks on the courgettes 🤣🤣

New desk area which will be much tidier and give more space in the rest of the room for activities, either mine or the grandchildren’s 😂

Sam dropped me back home and John had got the panels in and the desk fitted and levelled up, he had also lit the Rayburn. He measured up for the shelves, wrote down his second cutting list and went off and that was the last I saw of him until 4pm, oh I just had to do a little job for Martin while I was out he said but the good news is I have the shelves in the van. Bloody good job as I don’t want this dragging on over days with the contents of the office still in the living room.

Once he got back I put the dinner on and fed the cats and dogs, he shut the birds away and we got on with fitting the shelves, I must say I am very pleased with how it has turned out. What is done at the minute is for the interim and we will get to doing it properly after Christmas, for the time being we have a room that two travel cots will now fit in plus any other equipment that they need 😀

Tuesday: It’s 9.30 I have already done over 5000 steps and had a busy morning. The weather is sunny and feels mild, wet under foot I heard torrential rain a couple of times overnight consequently the mud is getting muddier 😏 The farrier came first thing this morning and so before I did any of the the usual rounds I got the horses in and hosed off their legs and feet, fed them and gave them some hay to keep them occupied. They are a bit like having twins, one won’t come in making life harder, then while they are tied up ready they poop in succession one after the other multiple times so I am constantly going backwards and forwards with a poop scoop clearing up. The farrier was going to be ten minutes late so I started on the birds, feeding, cleaning water buckets etc, once the farrier was there I carried on and did the rest of the jobs. Once he had finished it was time to turn the horses back out and clear up the debris from a hoof trim and hay spread everywhere. Then to clean the duck eggs, take out the rubbish, take some stuff from the office to the skip and finally get a cup of coffee. Now my aim is to get the rest of the stuff in the office sorted and that will be the end of that until after Christmas. John has gone to work today (supposed to have finished work for Christmas 🙄) Actually I think I will have a bowl of porridge before starting the next job 😀

So I spent a large part of the middle of the day sorting stuff out in the office, bear in mind that we don’t have a loft and so the usual loft occupants are stored in the office. I have tried to be ruthless and throw stuff out really I have but you can’t throw away old photos and bits of memories can you? I got sidetracked looking through one box of old stuff that I had forgotten was there, I started to look through it piece by piece then thought ooops I had better box it for looking at another day and get on. Then there are the toys, well all Nanas have toys for the grandchildren, and books, many of which were the girls when they were little. I need to work out where and how to put them, books and small part toys up out of the reach of the twiglets 🙄 toddler toys within their reach so they can play, it’s not as easy as it sounds accommodating everything in a 12 x 12ft room 😏 Then it is also the room we keep the hoover and the steam mop, I considered buying a cordless job that hangs on the wall but after getting opinions from family it seems they are not strong on suction. I am sure I will get it all sorted eventually and some of it is fairly temporary, the kids will eventually grow out of the toys and prefer to watch the tv 😂

I did some hoovering once I finally got everything out of the living room then sat down for lunch, when I moved the remote control the telly came on by accident and a film was just starting so I watched that 😜 Then time to light the Rayburn and feed the animals, collect the eggs, John came home, measured up for some timber for the ceiling went off to get that, I shut the animals away as it got dark and bam that’s another day over but this evening we are not doing any work just going to relax, after I have fed the cats, dogs, got the dinner then washed up of course 🙄

Wednesday: Today’s plan was to go Christmas shopping in Witney but first thing Johns phone rang and someone had water all over the bathroom floor and so he puts on his magic plumber cape and went off to the rescue. Marvellous that leaves me doing the rounds stomping round slightly pissed off, never a good start to the day 😜 He returned about 45 mins later and we set off shopping, it was a grey, drizzly morning that got slowly worse, a tad cold to boot. We walked round and noted how many of the shops had closed their doors for good and then at lunchtime stopped at a pub for something to eat. Fearing that we may have had to book in advance and that there may not be any spaces we tentatively went in to find out. Well you could have knocked me down with a feather as the place was practically empty, this is a big pub that is normally very busy and it was practically dead, it really hit home then how bad things are for local shops and hospitality businesses it was a very sad realisation 😢 We have not been to town since before the first lockdown and in fact we hardly go anywhere when I think about it, the upside was a couple of new boutique shops have opened and the food at the pub was excellent and the staff upbeat, John had his first pint for more than six months and he commented that it tastes just how he remembered, what times we live in 😏

Back home and we lit the Rayburn sat down and John promptly fell asleep, that’s what having a pint at lunchtime does 😂

To be honest it does not feel very much like Christmas is approaching 🙄 I guess it is up to us to get into the spirit, a Christmas film or two or three is in order I think and then of course I need to get my tree up and now I have the space I can get on with it.

Thursday: It’s a Misty morning but still mild and it supposed to stay dry so that’s good. I am on my own again today as John has to work (he was supposed to have finished now 🙄) I know it’s paid the bills all these years but at times I hate being the plumbers wife as you always come at the bottom of the list! Not that I really need him at home I have plenty to do that he will only get in the way of 😂 I am sat writing this little bit first thing as I have a bad lower back and waiting for the painkillers to kick in before I go and start the rounds, it started at the weekend and has got slowly worse but there is no chance of resting it today and hopefully moving around will help it get better, we shall see 🤷‍♀️

I am getting nowhere fast, I have plenty to do but as I decide what to do next there is always something else that needs doing first before I can commence 😜 I want to get the decorations up but John has the timber for the ceiling joists and I know that if I put stuff up and he then carries them through the house something is going to get broken or knocked over so I will wait. I have stuff to wrap but again I am waiting for the office to be cleared of diy debris to put stuff in there 🙄 hopefully tomorrow the ceiling timbers will go in and then I can start to get sorted in earnest. I like to time Christmas, I don’t like it to peak too early but I also don’t like to be rushing around at the last minute, maybe I will make some lists as at the minute as per usual it’s all tumbling around in my head. I have some linen napkins but for the life of me I have no idea where they are, all I know is that they are here somewhere and I will find them eventually, I need to figure out how the Christmas table will look this year, I have ordered something to make a different centrepiece but at the minute that’s as far as I have got, I am sure it will all come together in the end.

I did write lists, Christmas dinner lists, Boxing Day food lists, to do lists and then I managed to get a click and collect slot for food shopping so I have done that and now feeling a little less panicked the only other things I will need to get are those with a short shelf life such as fresh fruit for the trifle 😀 oh and I found the napkins so I can think about the table layout, always an important feature in our house, if you are going to have a mid winter feast you want to make it special rather than just a Sunday roast with crackers 😂

Unbelievably I was looking for a reference to something in my old blogs and more precisely this time last year, reading through it the similarities are uncanny, it appears that this time last year I had the entire contents of the boot room in my kitchen while John was laying the floor AND I was having more frequent blood tests because my white cells had dropped, I didn’t find the thing I was looking for but it was weird 😝

Friday: John is off again today and the plane is to get the ceiling timbers in and then the numerous wires for all the technological paraphernalia up over the timbers out of the way of small people 😜 He got on with that while I went out and did the morning feeding rounds, I also cleaned out the light Sussex pen and put new bedding in for the ducks and some of the hens in the stable. I noticed that something had been trying to dig I round the back of the stable and made quite a big hole, big enough for a hen to get through. I went round the back and could smell fox and they have tried to dig in there before, we had covered the ground with wire and heavy stones but for some reason this bit was not done so I spent my time doing that, as always your defences are only as good as the weakest part of them and they soon get exposed. Did that came I had coffee fed the dogs and the cats and helped John to get one of the cables through the wall to the tv area, I was hoping he would not touch any cable until I came back in but nope there were some of them unplugged which is all very well but John does not do technology and has no idea where they all plug back into! Quickly tidy up and hoover the room, put things away again and off to get my blood tests done. My house is like a Rubic cube I was thinking, you have to move one bit before another can be put in p,ace and there is a lot of fiddling around to get it right 😜 At least now I can get the tree up tonight and start wrapping presents etc.

And finally I can get the tree up and the Christmas decorations out 😀

Saturday: Another busy day moving bits of the rubic cube around 😂 but first we did the morning rounds and then John got on with tidying up the back area, putting stuff away, burning rubbish as well as popping out to get some dog food and a few shopping essentials, his not mine as it included chocolate biscuits 🙄 Meanwhile I got the office into a little bit more order so that I could do some last bits of paperwork before Christmas and then I could sort the spare room and the kitchen table and finally I am all sorted for the time being.

I did a little furniture hack that I am pretty pleased with, I wanted a small side table next to a chair in the office but it needed to be pretty stable as the kids will use it as a playroom. So I bought a waste paper basket and a small round tray, turned the basket upside down and stuck the tray on, now I have a lovely little table that looks high end, I think it’s a winner and it will certainly do the job.

Corona Virus, it hasn’t gone away in fact it has mutated and the new variant is spreading faster than ever 😏 We are waiting for an update form the Prime Minister to see what tougher measures will be put in place. As it stands at the minute we can have three households together for Christmas and most people have made their plans around that criteria including us. Breaking news: The update means that we can now only spend Christmas Day with the other people 😏 when will this shit be over 😢 Luckily John had already decided not to work in January so he will be off which is just as well I think, I can see more lockdowns on the horizon.

Sunday: Started off pretty well, we did the morning rounds and then decided to go to the garden centre where they have 50% off the Christmas decorations and I had seen a few that I wanted to get. We mooched about and then John decided that he fancied breakfast, they had almost finished serving it but we got in just in time. Did a few other bits and returned home, I checked the egg shed as usual, delivery from Amazon in there but the rest of it looked bare, the bloody honesty box was gone! Some low life scum had nicked it, ripped it clean off the base it was screwed to, gone, box, padlock and the money inside 🤬 luckily it was only this mornings egg money so amounted to just over a tenner but that’s not the point, we now have no box for anyone to put the money into until we get something sorted again. I sincerely hope Karma pays them a visit, puts you on edge as it is rare that both John and I are not here at the same time, I’d like to think it was just a chancer and not someone watching the place 😏

On that note I am going to sign out for this week and indeed for the rest of this year, so I will wish you all a very merry Christmas, hope you all stay safe and I will be back in 2021. I will leave you with a picture of something nice I found in the egg shed this week, we do have lovely customers.

I’ll give the sourdough a miss 😝 butternut squash soup and indigo rose tomatoes 🍅

Monday 12th October 2020: The pandemic continues though I have to say it seems like it is happening elsewhere and I hope they don’t end up being famous last words 🙄 Seriously though we seem to be in a bit of a bubble here, the last outbreak before and during lockdown didn’t really seem to hit our rural area very hard and hopefully the same will be said for this second wave. Today the Prime Minister will announce new measures to try and curb the virus, we wait to see what those will be 😏

Meanwhile life is as normal as is possible and today I have VIP’s coming for tea, the grandchildren are coming after school for sandwiches, cake and jelly and ice cream 😀 I busied myself with getting things tidied, put away (always seems to be things to put away) getting some washing on, sorting the kittens, then making jelly and cake.

The sourdough starter seemed to have a life of its own overnight, it grew so much that it leaked out of the sides, that’s a good thing 😀 I guess it was due to the heat from the Rayburn in the kitchen as this morning it has calmed back down again although it still has life (bubbles) so I have fed it again. The sourdough dough I had in a bowl which didn’t seem to rise was showing signs of activity this morning so I baked it to see how it came out. I can tell you that if I was about to attack a local castle keep I would consider using it in the catapult 😂 it’s a bit solid, however I cut it and it smells like sourdough though heavy in structure, I tasted it and it has that sour taste so I’d say it’s about 70% successful, just need to improve on the technique now.

The measures have been announced and we are going into a three tired system of medium, high and very high risk with various rules for each of those but not a complete lockdown, I’m not sure if any of this will do any good the numbers still seem to be climbing and climbing 🙄

Tuesday: A cold but dry morning this morning. John did the morning rounds before going off to do some proper work 😂 I spent the morning organising food by various means, first I got some butternut squash soup on the go for my lunch today, that’s basically a butternut squash, onion, sweet potato, chicken stock, black pepper and a grating of nutmeg, I will taste it later and see if it needs a sprinkle of anything else such as curry powder or my new fav thing to use smoked paprika 😀 Then I ordered a box of beef from a local smallholder, hhttps://www.emmasewesfulacres.com I have had it from her before and when she delivers I will probably have a look to see what lamb she has on the van. That will keep us going through Autumn and Winter, we have our own chicken and duck in the freezer already plus some venison, goat meat and fish that I still have to use up. Once I had ordered that I sorted out dinner for this evening which tonight is salmon, I will have mine with a honey, sesame oil, soy sauce and balsamic vinegar marinade, then orzo, bell pepper, broccoli, garlic and ginger stir fry while John will have his with potato and veg, we are worlds apart when it comes to food. In light of the fact he will hate having salmon (but will eat it) I got tomorrow’s dinner underway as well (go me) a hearty oxtail stew in the slow cooker. Oxtail isn’t something that many use any more but it has great flavour, it has gone in with carrots, potato, onion, tomato paste, black pepper, beef stock, Worcester sauce and thyme, again I will give it a taste test to see if anything else needs adding. I will slow cook it all day, turn it off over night and then turn it on again around lunchtime tomorrow, stews taste better if they are made one day and eaten the next, so they say anyway, certainly gives it time for all those flavours to mingle.

Butternut squash soup (no filter) lovely vibrant colour packed with vitamin A, C, E & beta carotene, also contains many important minerals 😀

I have let the kittens out this morning, up to now they have only had the run of the boot room but today the door is open to the back undercover area. To begin with they went out and I couldn’t see them anywhere but the next time I went out, there they were and they came in for some dreamies so that’s a good sign that they will stay close by (for the time being) even if I don’t know where they are. Eventually they will get more adventurous and go further afield but hopefully always coming back for some food.

I have come to the conclusion that the sourdough starter does not do very well in our house because we don’t have a stable constant temperature, it gets warm in the evening after we have lit the Rayburn mid afternoon but we let it out mid evening so it doesn’t get too hot over night. The starter seems to be reacting to these temps, first it grows well during the evening but by morning it’s flat again because it’s much colder. I have fed it again this morning and will see what happens later, I thought about making the bread in the evening but again sourdough takes longer to prove than normal bread so that may not work either. I don’t even eat very much bread of any kind so I’m not sure why I am doing it to be honest 😜 just because I wanted to have a go, I may give up on it though and buy the odd loaf now and again 🤷‍♀️

I have also been busy over the last week or so ordering Christmas presents, who knows exactly what is going to happen over the next few months, might as well get ahead just in case it all goes haywire. It’s crazy when you really think about it all, weeks in total lockdown, who ever thought that would happen, now we are all wearing masks when we go out into town, we can only meet a few people at a time, some places have tighter restrictions than others, as I have said before I can’t wait to see the blockbuster film that will inevitably be made about this lol, not quite as scary as The Walking Dead but just as unbelievable (well it will be when they look back in history) Yes indeed we are living through some very strange times 😏

After lunch I went out to the post box and realised it was nice and warm in the sun, it’s often colder indoors than outside here, so I decided to get my gear on and do a bit of garden work. I spent a happy couple of hours cutting back dead stuff and pulling up veg that has now gone over, digging up comfrey (as it’s seeded everywhere) I did stop short on one patch when I spotted ladybirds, probably trying to find a place to hibernate for winter, better make sure I don’t tidy too much 🙄 Back indoors for a quick coffee and a sit down before the afternoon rounds begin. I have seen no more signs of snakes and also sadly I have not seen any frogs all summer, even in the dank areas, I think the snakes have eaten them all 😢 either that or they are hiding well.

While I was working away I was also pondering on what I had learnt this year in the garden, no matter how much you know there is always more to learn. I learnt that yacon are pretty easy to grow here and that they taste very good, I learnt that often when you think a veg plant is ‘spent’ it surprises you with more offerings (I’m thinking about the loofah here) I learnt that the weather can throw you curve balls ( actually I know that but this years was the biggest yet) and that I need to do more to prepare for weather anomalies. I learnt a bit about myself, I like to grow things in order, I am not good with what seems to be chaos in the veg garden but I know I need to learn to cope with it as it’s a better way of growing 😂

I am hearing more and more worrying reports of people who have had COVID for a second time, that’s just plain unlucky and I think we were hoping that if you get it once you won’t get it again. The ‘Long COVID’ is also a worry, people dealing with the effects of it long after they have recovered from it, maybe this virus is every bit as bad as they say it is, I hope we never find out.

I have just googled to see if there is a general trend towards panic buying again, not on the same scale as we saw before but it is there it seems. This would tie in with the increase of egg customers we have had, there have been weeks when we didn’t have a single customer for two or three days and now suddenly we are inundated again, I have seen customers wearing masks again which had all but stopped so there must be some unease out there. Unfortunately it’s the time of year when we have less eggs than usual due to the shortening of daylight time so there will never be enough eggs to go round 🙄 John and I discussed what we would do if we went into another lockdown as the gate sales were crazy and of course we had people who had never been before and haven’t been back since which was really unfair on our regular customers but we were unable to stop it as it came upon us pretty swiftly. It’s a difficult one to determine because although we do know most of our regulars especially the ones that have been coming for years, there are some that we couldn’t readily identify. I think we would initially just shut the gate and have a think about it 😂

Wednesday: Is it only mid week, seems like it’s been a long week already and we are only halfway there 😏 The sun was shinning beautifully this morning but by 9am when I went out to put the rubbish out the sky was looking moody and five minutes later a rain shower appeared, I think that is how the day will unfold today. I thought that perhaps today was not going to be an outside work day so I set about cleaning out the fridge, not a massive task but it’s amazing how many things get left from week to week and before you know it they have been there months. So out went anything that looked well past it’s date, I will keep and use some things that have gone past the best before date especially if they are still sealed but today was a clear out day. Out went a half jar of mincemeat probably used last Christmas, a half jar of plum sauce I made last year and a half jar of pickled onions also probably last used at Christmas, none of them showing any signs of mould but time to throw them anyway. There were the usual culprits in the bottom drawer, soggy cucumbers and shrivelled apples, any thing half decent will go to the geese and guineas the rest will go for composting. Amazing how satisfying it is to see a clean tidy fridge 😂 I also made the decision to abandon the sourdough starter 😭 things were not going well with it and so time to admit defeat, I think if I want sourdough I will buy it 😂

Another thing that occurred to me was that you may be wondering about Ted’s fate as we move closer to Christmas, rest assured he will not be joining us for dinner 😜 he is now part of the smallholding family and has a name so will continue to live freely here. He is totally oblivious to the fate of his fellow turkians though and as a result is not in the least bit grateful still making John walk him back to his pen each night 🙃

Well it didn’t rain in fact it was very pleasant out there and consequently I have had a very productive morning. At first I had no idea what to do, to be fair we have so much to do that it can be overwhelming at times, in those circumstances it’s an idea to pick a starting point and work from there. Did I do that, nope I flitted from job to job BUT I still made progress , or at least I feel like I did. First I tidied up the egg shed area where I put out plants for sale, then I took down some fencing that was screwed to other fencing that will be coming down eventually. I went to put the plant shelves (that were out by the egg shed) away and the shed they go into was a tip so I cleaned out the shed and threw away a wheelbarrow full of ‘crap’ and now I can walk into the shed easily 😀 After that I had a walk round the veg garden and started clearing some bits away, I picked a few tomatoes and then moved onto the big tunnel. I cleared away the cucumber vine which all but spent, there were about five small cues on there so I picked them first, the skins are toughening now and so I could have kept the vine going but the cues would not be very nice. Then I cut back and pulled out the cape gooseberry plants which have turned into triffids over the last two years and I decided I don’t want them in there any more. I must be in a ‘cleansing’ mood at the minute as it feels good to get it all sorted. At times with many diseases but especially Lupus you get ‘brain fog’ this is a real thing just in case you have ever wondered. Brain fog takes away the ability to be able to focus and think clearly hence the standing there wondering where to begin on many occasions 😜 I never used to be like that, I always had a definite plan of attack and some days I still do but others I just have to muddle through as best as possible and hope for a good result 😀

I collected some seeds while I was going about my jobs, some morning glory, which have been splendid and some Sarah Raven California poppies which are just the most beautifully delicate little poppies (must remember that those are still in my jacket pocket 🙄) Seed collecting is one of the pleasures of gardening and an important part of self sustainability, buying the seeds just once should ensure a lifetimes supply of that plant unless something goes horribly wrong. The same can be said with perennials, once you have them they can be divided over and over and you never need to buy it again. Many vegetables will produce seed if left long enough and again collecting those ensure you will have a crop next year, something I need to make more of an effort to do especially after this year when everyone was buying them and suddenly they were scarce. With that in mind, at my trip to the garden centre I bought some seeds that I had not been able to get hold of this year just in case. Red cabbage was one, I tried and tried to find the seeds but I couldn’t get any, the other seeds I picked up were for an indigo tomato. I bought a plant this year and it has been amazing, you may find this in shops but they would have to be niche I think. These toms are delicious and again because of their colour they are packed with vitamins and antioxidants, they have more flesh than a regular tomato and so do not go to mush when they are cut.

Indigo Rose tomato, a superfood 😀

I need to go through my veg seeds and see what I have left, what I have collected so far and what needs to be ordered. I have some little gem lettuce that are going to seed at the minute so I will be collecting those hopefully. The French beans are drying in the greenhouse and the runner beans are still on the plant, when they look ready I will get them in to dry, I have pepper seeds drying on the windowsill and there are some chick peas to be harvested which grew from just three seeds, I have trebled them this year 😀 In theory I need never buy seeds again but where is the fun in that 😜

Thursday: A bright, sunny morning but a bit of a chill in the air, so far this morning I have just pottered about doing various household tasks. Sam and the twins are going to come over today so we will probably go out for a walk round the village, got to make the best of the good days while we can and also spend time together while we can as who knows what this winter will be like with Covid lurking round every corner.

I hatched a plan last night, in fact it is something I thought of doing this year but didn’t so I am definitely doing it next year. I will use the ménage to grow pumpkins and squash and to make sure I do I have already ordered a good selection of squash seeds. Butternut, spaghetti, banana, acorn, and a selection of pumpkin varieties, this year because the ménage has not been used the weeds have taken hold, if I use it to grow sprawling veg that will at least lessen that problem. It’s a massive area for growing roughly 40 x 20 metres 😮 the surface has always been woodchip and it constantly breaks down so there should be some good loam under there, probably the best growing site on the Smallholding 😂

Just had a news update come through and London is moving to tier two on the restrictions 🙄

Went on a walk around the village with Sam, George and Lucie, on the way back we stopped and saw Grampy (John) who was in the village working. Sam fed the kids their dinner when we got back and she had literally left when Shelley and Florence arrived 😀

They said it was going to be warmer today than yesterday but I don’t think it is, there is a definite chill in the air even when the sun is out.

Friday: Dry, overcast and not too cold this morning. Just stopped for a coffee, we are total creatures of habit aren’t we? I was working outside and thought, time for coffee, without even looking at my watch I find that it’s exactly the time I would have a coffee if I was indoors 🤷‍♀️ This morning I have meditated, had a shower with a blast of cold water at the end, fed the quail, the horses and the Guineas extra rations, put clean bedding in for the ducks and the geese plus all the usual routine jobs. The horses are being given extra feed now as the grass is getting sparse, you can tell by the way they start to hang around the gateways that they are getting hungrier. We are trying to give biscuit a mix of cod liver oil, turmeric, black pepper and ginger as she is getting on a bit and it might just help her with her old bones. The problem is Jack (greedy git that he is) I feed them and have to guard her feed as Jack scoffs his quickly and she takes a lot longer, he is then trying to get to hers 🙄 I spotted one the kittens up a tree while I was out there, they are getting more adventurous but luckily they do come running back if I appear. We see Diesel every couple of days, I have no idea where he disappears to but he eventually comes home, not much good at keeping the mice down round the farm though if he is off wandering.

The garlic, onions and shallots I ordered a few weeks back have arrived so I need to think about getting those in, hopefully I will do that today.

I have been listening to a pod cast that is very funny, it’s Lee Mack and his friend ‘I can’t believe it’s not Buddha’ it’s a hilarious chat about a path they are both following with serious intention, if you see me laughing out loud with my headphones in, that’s what I will be listening to 😜

I spent a wonderful two hours weeding and clearing the bean bed. The top quarter I had already done as that’s where the cauliflower are now planted but the rest of the bed needed doing. At the beginning of the year I had some self seeded yellow daisies growing in there so I let them carry on but I had forgotten how big the plants got as a consequence they over shadowed a lot of the peas I had growing so I won’t let them stay there next year. I pulled out the remains of these daisies, a Swiss chard ( I dug that up and gave it to the guineas) that had self set, hundreds of weeds of all types and the dead foliage of bean and pea plants. I had intended to put the onions, garlic and shallots in here but the side of the bed has collapsed and needs re doing (cue John 😜) so I will wait until I get that sorted before planting them. I am glad I have cleared it all as there were a lot of white fly probably settling down to overwinter, they tuck themselves right down in the foliage near to the roots ready for a comfy sleep I suspect, not any more 🙄 I say a wonderful two hours because it was lovely, the weather was just right, warm enough, no sun, no wind, no rainy bits and the ground is dry enough to work on without getting very dirty 😀 I still have plenty more work to do out there but that will be enough for today, time for lunch and a sit down before getting on with the afternoon jobs.

The healthy eating is going well (most of the time) I have lost a stone and a half! Impressed, yep me too 😀 I amazed actually 😜 Many years back I started WW and got to goal then spent about 10 years clerking for them but gradually the weight crept back on and then some. I know what to eat I just didn’t know why I wasn’t doing it even though I wanted to shift the ‘back fat’ and the third boob, the girls will know what I mean by that 😉 So when I started seeing ads for Noom I was intrigued by the psychology aspect it was presenting, two weeks free trail, what did I have to lose 🤷‍♀️ The two weeks came to an end and I thought might as well carry this on, so I did, I am. There is no miracle to losing weight, it’s mainly persistence but I think the Noom app helps an awful lot with that, there are lessons and information every single day digging into your own psychology (sometimes you dig so deep you surprise yourself) learning the best food balance for you and your situation, it’s not a diet as such more the re-set of your mind when it comes to food choices. I am obviously not affiliated to them nor do I suggest you rush out and join, just telling you my experience of it, I think it’s a great thing to follow, it took me a while to get my head around it, I thought I knew all there was to know about dieting but it seems not 😝

I babysat Mia and the twins although the twins were already in bed so MIA and I had fun taking photos, dancing and singing 😀

Saturday: Another dry, reasonable day today, John did the animals and then had to go off to do a quick plumbing job. When he got back he began to dig out the last bit of the path, but I needed his help fixing the side of the veg bed that had collapsed. So we sourced some wood, dug it out and put in new sides, I got on with back filling the bed while he went to finish what he started. I raked and riddled the bed, took out as much bindweed root as I could find and then I needed Johns help again 😂 and I wonder why he takes so long over jobs 😝 I wanted to bury the soaker hose in the soil, it was partly buried but over time had come up, it was also too long and curled around on itself in places, first I had to cut it to length which meant the end now had no stop. The stop on the original bit had failed (I always wondered why there was a puddle) so I asked John if he had anything that would work, being a plumber I was pretty sure he would. It did mean filing down the outside of the soaker hose though so the bit could be fitted, once it was done we tested it and voila it works well. He went back to his job (again) and I got on with burying the pipe down the centre of the bed, this will give me a more even watering than I had before. After that I planted all the onions, shallots and garlic bulbs, 20 shallots, 16 garlic and I lost count of the onions after 40 but I think there are about 50 in total. That’s not the end of the job because of course I then have to cover them so that the chickens don’t scratch them all up which given that they love freshly turned soil, is a dead cert. I got some lengths of environmesh and pegged them down this will also stop the birds thinking the tops of the onions are worms and pulling them out, it won’t stop the worms pushing them up and out though 😂 So that’s all done and I probably won’t have to do anything to them until next spring unless it gets very weedy between now and then. Environmesh is great stuff and well worth the investment, don’t use environ fleece as that just breaks up, the mesh lets the light and the rain in but keeps the birds off it also creates a micro climate by trapping any warm air a bit like a string vest 😜

Hopefully there will be more days like these when the weather is favourable enough to be able to get the rest of the beds under control and prepared for next spring. I have done that bed and one third of another bed only four and two thirds more to go 😣 In total I have the fruit cage, the two tunnels, the brassica cage, five very large beds, one long thin one, a separate raised bed and the birds, bees and beer bed, I need to start pulling my finger out I think 🤔

Sunday: Man o man I am knackered 😜 I have spent all day from about 9 this morning, it’s now 4pm, burning wood 🙄 The cladding that came off the front of the building needed burning so that was today’s job, there were a few branches from some trees that had been there a while as well. First I had to sort through the pile as it all just got dumped there, there was a pile of painted stuff that needs to go in the skip, a pile of wood that was ok and would come in handy at some point and a pile of gravel boards. I then sorted the wood into smaller and longer bits, the smaller bits I started off in the burning barrel but about two hours in the side started to give so then I started a pile on the ground. The reason I didn’t do this in the first place was the wood was too close to where I would be burning and I like a controlled burn, John, like most men I suspect, would have just had a twenty foot pile of wood and set fire to it 😜 Also he would not have thought about the insects and any small animals that might be under the wood whereas I do so if I move it then they have a chance of getting away first. In fact I was stood there and a little mouse came creeping out of the ground, saw the fire and high tailed away elsewhere 🐭 Meanwhile John was busy creating next weeks burning load, he has given the hedge, where we had the trees cut down, a good pruning both the top and the sides as the branches had got long and straggly. Come spring they should bush out really well as well as grow higher, they have good big roots on them so that will help.

Next weeks pile of burnings 😜

Charlie and Macca called in for a cuppa before go out for the afternoon, we should do something I said to John but in the end we carried on working 😂

Curveball INCOMING……………🙄

Monday 22nd June 2020: And here we are back round at Monday again, still in the throes of a pandemic but hopefully coming out the other side slowly. We have had a constant day today, plenty of jobs and constantly busy. We started off with a bit of tractor work which John did, dragging the paddocks and then he decided to roll them, I told him it was too dry but he didn’t listen. When he came back in he said ‘the paddocks are too dry’ 🙄 I did a fair bit of picking, mostly veg for dinner tonight but also fruit. Most of our meal is home grown everyday at the minute and what isn’t home grown is from other smallholders 😀 Seasonal eating means strawberries and raspberries for pudding every day 😜 I’m not complaining. I picked cherries again this morning and the morello cherries are ripe, and the birds haven’t eaten them so far, so I picked the ones that were ready and started the process of glacé cherries. It’s a ten day process but well worth doing if you fancy a go. Picking and processing begins in earnest now for winter stores and any future pandemic 🤪

After a spot of lunch and a cuppa the next batch of chickens arrived, John sorted them out while I messaged everyone who had them on order. Then time to feed the chickens and collect the eggs ready to put them out and as soon as that was done customers began to arrive to collect their chickens. We squeezed dinner in between arrivals and then Samantha arrived to give Mia the dog a haircut. She has such a thick coat and with the temps set to climb over 30 this week it seemed like a good time to get it off for her, she is now scalped and bathed and I have ordered her a new bed as patch keeps pinching her nice plush one.

A little bit of work in the garden once it had cooled right down, in for a hot chocolate before we ago off to bed, the alarm is set for 5am so I can get some work done before it gets too hot tomorrow.

Tuesday: Up at the crack of sparrows 😜 actually the sparrows have been up for at least an hour already lol. Straight out in the garden to get some picking and weeding done. I managed to get another lot of morello cherries, last year the crows stripped the tree bare but this year they have left them alone and I only have a single blackbird helping himself so I don’t mind that. I also picked mangetout, rhubarb and artichoke, I sorted out a few plants to put out for sale, did the hoovering indoors and then we nipped out to do a few bits in town. Now it’s very hot out there and I can feel the uv rays causing itching on my arms already so it’s 12noon and I am done outside as there’s no more shade for me to furtively move about in 🤪

Generally any indoor time I spend looking up recipes or doing a bit of research on various subjects, or cooking etc.

A few more chicken customers this evening, dinner then pop to the shop to buy bread and come out with two bagfuls of shopping 🙄 pop round to Shelley and Martin for a quick cuppa and then home.

Wednesday: Up very early today as it is going to be hot and I want to get a bit done before I have to come indoors. Plenty of hoeing and weeding, some pricking out (spring cabbage ready for winter planting) some picking, more mange tout and cherries. Then indoors to stone the cherries and freeze them the mange tout went out for sale, do what needs to be done to the glacé cherries and make some blackcurrant sauce for ice cream. Tidy up and put a few bits away, put some washing out, Hoover the boot room and clean the dog beds, lunch. I saw a rat while I was putting food out for the torts so John got his air gun out and I sat with him for a while to see where they are coming from and going to, I have left him out there waiting ………..I doubt very much he will get any, he is far too impatient and keeps moving about, not quietly either 🙄

Thought I would take a photo of my arm and show you what just getting caught in the sun for a few minutes at a time does to me. You can see small raised bumps, that continues up my arms and is really itchy especially when I get hot. This occurs even when I am trying to spend as much time out of the sun as possible because even doing that I have to nip out to get the washing in or go to the gate and get a delivery, even in the car to appointments is exposure. The more I am exposed the worse it gets. At the moment I have the butterfly rash on my face as well, luckily that does not itch its just annoying as it looks like I’ve had one too many 😜 The itchy bumps come even if I have myself covered so the uv rays penetrate clothing easily and if I sat out in it my legs, back, neck and chest would all be affected, great isn’t it, that is why I avoid the sun as much as possible, even factor 50 can’t protect me enough. My medication is supposed to bring my immune system down to a ‘normal’ level in line with everyone else but it never seems to work like that with sun exposure. In a nutshell, I don’t do sunshine 🤪

Thursday: It’s bloody hot lol. It’s our 37th Wedding Anniversary today not that we can do a lot of celebrating 🥳 Up early got the outside work done and then it was blood tests for me, I had to wear a face mask this time which is something new and FYI your glasses steam up every few seconds 🙄 Then we got a takeaway coffee from a local cafe that has re opened, they do particularly good coffee and we sat out on the pavement (not actually on the pavement) and watched the town for about 15 minutes. It’s Market day and although it was busier than it has been of late, it’s not anywhere near as busy as it used to be before the pandemic. We popped in to see Mum and Ken where we had more coffee and then back home to spend the rest of the day inside in the cool. John nipped out late afternoon to do a sink for someone but that’s pretty much it, just waiting now for the weather to break a bit, it will probably hammer down and I still won’t be doing much outside, I should give up really, everything seems against me getting any outside work done lately.

Friday: Getting pretty peed off with the weather now, it was supposed to break and rain today but again we have wall to wall sunshine, John has been off this week but it’s been too hot to do much and I wanted to get a quick trip to a local nursery or the garden centre in but that has also not been possible. Most of the areas are obviously outside and by the time they are open it’s too hot for me to be walking about in it, so I’m sulking instead 😏 We got the morning jobs done in the cool of the day and cleaned all the furniture on the decking. We put the decking under a wild cherry tree, big mistake, at this time of year not only are the cherries falling but the birds sit up there eating them and do what birds do when something goes in one end 🙄 The cherries are nearly all gone now and tonight we are having champagne and nibbles with my brother and his wife and my sister and her husband, we were all supposed to be going on the cruise together and so I thought it would be nice to at least get together and lament 🤪

The new egg customers that were so desperate to have eggs during the lockdown appear to have abandoned us 🙄 that’s fine because it means that for our long standing loyal customers there should always be eggs for them but it does make you think about how fickle people are. John and I discussed the idea that if a second lockdown came we would only allow regular customers to have eggs we just need to work out how we would do it.

Saturday: Life has a habit of throwing you a curveball every now and then and that is exactly what happened last night. John started having chronic stomach pains and eventually was taken to A & E where he was kept overnight and today has been admitted to a ward. About 20 years ago he had the same problem over a period of four years and they didn’t know what it was until eventually it was so bad one day that they just opened him up to have a look. What they found was a condition called interception which is where the bowel folds in on itself causing a narrowing of the bowel, they think this was triggered buy the fact that he cannot digest mushrooms and they were lodged firmly in the narrowing. He hasn’t had mushrooms though so at this point I have no idea what has caused it this time 🙄 Obviously it’s not great timing with the whole pandemic, the system is much different to what we are used to, for a start you deliver them to the door of A & E and that’s it, you can’t go in, you can’t visit and so consequently most of the time you have no idea of what is happening 🙄 We managed to get through and find out what was going on at lunchtime today that’s a long time to wait with no news. As you can imagine, today I have done the morning rounds and that is it, I am waiting near the phone in case I get an update, I will do the afternoon rounds later but not much else will get done today. The covid distancing rules went out the window as my sister and brother in law took John to hospital and later Charlie and Macca came here to stay the night with me 🙄

Sunday: John is still in hospital though having spoken to the nurse on several occasions I can report that he is no longer in pain and is declining pain relief so that’s progress. He has had several investigations and at the moment they are waiting to see what happens when he eats, all being well they are thinking of discharging him tomorrow, we wait and see.

Charlie stayed over again last night and helped out with things this morning, there are still jobs to be done, feeding, watering, picking etc. Once everything was completed I sorted out the veg and shelley arrived so I gave her the cherries to process 😀 meanwhile I made something I saw on a Facebook feed and it intrigued me, a recipe that was hundreds of years old, very simple and a delicious healthy snack which is why I wanted to give it a go. Dried dates, soaked in boiling water for half an hour, pistachios ground up to make a powder and a tiny amount of butter, that’s it. Add half the pistachio powder to the soaked dates (discard the water first) add the melted butter and fork them together then roll small amounts in the remaining powder, voila, easy, nutritious and healthy snacks 😀 You thought power packed healthy food was a modern thing didn’t you, turns out our ancestors knew about them all along lol.

Mersu

That’s about it from me this week although I am all fired up after watching a film that I think everyone should watch if they eat, and that’s most of us isnt it. https://grow.foodrevolution.org/ watch this space I will be writing more about this once life has got back to some sort of normality.

Have a great week, stay safe x

Runner beans 😀 a snake and finally some rain 🌧

Monday June 1st 2020: There is still a worldwide pandemic going on but life is trying to get back to normal albeit baby steps. John has returned to the bathroom he started 10 weeks ago to finish it off this week, it is still a little difficult getting building supplies but it can be done it just needs planning ahead. He is doing the morning rounds before he goes so that I can get straight on in the veg garden, this is because if I did the animals, by the time I have finished the Sun has moved right round and I am running out of time to get anything sorted 🙄 He will be home in time to do the afternoon rounds, again because it is so hot I would suffer badly having to go out in it every day. It does occur to me that we need to radically change how things are set up but we never seem to work out how is best to do it, you can’t really get instant shade unless you pay a fortune for it, we would need a forest really lol.

I spent the early morning watering the plants that needed doing, poly tunnels, newly sown seeds and pots, then I had time to go round and sort out all the odds and sods I have in pots around he place. Some of them are pot bound, mostly bits I potted up last year and then left to get on with it, I had lovage in a pot and I have now divided into four pieces and potted those up, I had straggly bits of plants here and there, all are for putting out for sale eventually but they need a bit of tlc first. A couple of dog roses I had in pots have now been planted next to a boundary fence that had gaps and I dug up bits that had self set in various places, free plants 😀

Next job was indoors to do a bit of hoovering and polishing, it’s easier when there is only me around plus it stays clean and tidy for a while which is nice. I have so many things to sort out indoors, the spare room now seems to have become a dumping ground as well as the office 😏 I need to have a good clear out I think as there are things I am never going to use just waiting there, just in case 😂

Guess what I just found! My jar of runner beans seeds, I bloody knew I had a jar somewhere 😂 I keep the seeds in the spare room over winter as it’s dry and cool, when I took the rest out I must have left them behind, then I had lots of spare cushions from the old sofa which I had put down the side of the bed and there under them was a jar of runner bean seeds 😜 The first lot I ordered still never turned up and now (unless I have catastrophic failure) I don’t need them 🙄

Sorry for the blur, I was so chuffed to have found them that I didn’t look at the pic I had taken 😂

Foxes are the bane of a chicken keepers life but I had a phone call this morning and heard an awful story of bees killing chickens. A hive was being relocated but apparently they didn’t get all the bees when they moved it, the ones left behind, realising their hive had gone, got angry, swarmed and attacked the hens next door killing three of them, poor hens 🙄

Tuesday: It’s 10am and I have sat down for a coffee, I drink a few cups of coffee in the mornings but usually on the go lol. I woke at 4am did consider getting up, I opened the curtains and the windows then thought it’s perhaps a tad too early and so laid back down and must have fallen asleep waking again at 5, this time I was up and about. First job after breakfasting was to go out and turn on one of the soaker hoses, I decided after poking my finger into various beds that the peas and bean bed would benefit most. While that was watering I picked veg for tonight’s dinner, carrots, the first of the new potatoes, mange-tout and asparagus we are having that with some lamb steaks. I also picked a few stalks of rhubarb and some strawberries, rhubarb and strawberry crumble for dessert 😀 I have chopped the mange-tout up smaller so John doesn’t notice, I also chopped the asparagus and carrots so we are having a ‘medley’ of veg. The rhubarb and strawberry crumble has been tweaked as well with a tiny pinch of vanilla power and some oats in the crumble mixture, I shall await the complaint from John but have decided that if I’m cooking, I’m doing it how I would like it sometimes 😜 I know he will still eat it anyway, he just likes to utter his objections 😂 I had a couple of over ripe bananas (that’s a novelty after weeks of not being able to get any) and so I also made a banana bread loaf with a twist. I substituted an ounce of butter with an ounce of peanut butter and added a few chocolate chips, again John doesn’t like peanut butter but his compulsion to eat cake will be greater 😂 The struggle with fussy eaters is real people, but I’m slowly managing to get him to comply. I am going to marinate my lamb in mint, oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper, I will do Johns plain, he would have a hissy fit at that and definitely wouldn’t eat it no matter how hungry he was lol.

After the picking and before the prepping and cooking I cleaned out the two rabbit/guinea cages and the quail hut, sorted the horses water and hay and put out some plants for sale at the front. John has gone to work again today but as always did the animals beforehand, after so many weeks off he is more than a little reluctant to go back, and if you know John in the workplace you will also know he is a worker, always loved going to work. He has enjoyed being home much more than he ever thought he would and hasn’t missed work one bit, well maybe a little bit as he does like to chatter, drink tea and get fed cake, with customers 😋

My blood tests all came back normal, yay, that’s the first time in about three months, I am slowly coming down off the steroids and increasing the new medication, next week it will be at full strength. So far it has been ok, I keep getting the sweats but the same thing happened with the methotrexate and eventually it subsided so I’m hoping the same happens with these tablets. At my time of life you would be forgiven for thinking it was menopausal but, and this is a stroke of luck, I was late to the meno, and have had hardly any of the problems that other women suffer with, I’m grateful, I mean there is only so much shit one person can handle and I think I have my fair share already 🙄

After coffee it was time to feed the torts, in weather like this they eat a lot lol, they can easily eat 4 big tomatoes a pepper, half a cucumber and two large handfuls of weeds a day if not more. Normally it would be hotter later in the year and I would have plenty growing to feed them with but this early in the season I have to buy toms, peppers and cues for them. They only really get those as seconds as the first thing they are offered are weeds and leafy greens but not lettuce (well a tiny bit) Their favourites in order of preference go like this, Tomato, peppers, cucumber, dandelion, thistle, garden weeds, aloe vera, ice plant, cabbage. They adore banana and strawberries although both are given in very limited quantities only occasionally as a treat, not so different from humans wanting the goodies all the time 😂 They have pretty much exhausted their forage now coupled with the lack of rain it’s a bit sparse although there is plenty of clover they don’t seem to be that interested in it.

Big Billy
Voldertort

They haven’t had their annual bath yet as the grandchildren normally do it so I’m waiting for the day they can start working again 😜

In the evening we went to Shelleys to have a cuppa in the garden with them but before we left I wanted to get the runner beans watered so I connected up the soaker hose ready to leave running while we were out. I moved a piece of black weed membrane that had blown across where it shouldn’t be and got a right surprise as something slithered across in front of me and dived back under it where I had moved it to. I carefully lifted it up and found a rather large grass snake looking at me 😀 I am quite delighted to see it as it means my little eco system is alive and well although they do eat frogs 😏 and eggs apparently 🙄 I also just read that the females are larger than the males and as this was around 3ft long I’m guessing it was female, and may have eggs in the compost heap 🤪

Did you know?

When threatened by one of its many predators, the grass snake often ‘plays dead’, perhaps making itself less appealing to eat. Predators include badgers, red foxes, domestic cats, hedgehogs and a number of birds; when caught, grass snakes hiss and release a foul-smelling substance from their anal gland. Although they may also strike with the head, they do not bite and are harmless to humans. https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife-explorer/reptiles/grass-snake

Wednesday: Oooo I have had the best of mornings 😀 firstly, it’s about 8/10 degrees cooler today and overcast 😀 secondly, we have had some rain, just a wetting so far nothing much but coupled with the cooler day it will do a little bit of good and I didn’t have to water early this morning. That left me to get on with other things, the bed that I can’t normally get to in sunny weather, I have moved the rhubarb that was there, it was really struggling so I dug it up and out it where we keep the muck ready to go on the garden. Instead I have planted another pumpkin nearby, I had to soak the ground beforehand as it’s rock solid, I put in plenty of well rotted manure, pumpkins are hungry plants, and hopefully it will grow nicely and give plenty of ground cover until I can decide what to do there come autumn. I planted some plum tomatoes in the big tunnel, still a few more to plant but they are still a bit small just yet. I have pottered and hoed and pottered some more 😀

Early this morning I spotted something unusual and thought it was a bee, I took photos and asked online and discovered it was an emerging cinnabar moth, I know what these look like but have never seen one that was just about to unfold itself before. It was a real treat to keep popping back and watching the process 😀

Emerging cinnabar moth
This is when I can see the hard work starting to pay off 😀 #selfsufficiency

Well it’s been kind of raining on and off all day so far, not enough to even start filling the water tanks but enough of a wetting to perk up the veg garden, not enough though to give them a proper soaking so far, I’m hoping that somewhere they are getting a good downpour as it will at least increase the available ground water levels 🙄

Although we are in full swing with the growing season it’s now the time to think about Winter veg sowings, this year I am going to try pak Choi as a winter crop, I thought about peas and broad beans but actually they only arrive a few weeks earlier than a spring sowing so I am undecided on that at the moment. I feel the garlic does much better over winter than spring sowings so will definitely do that again, I haven’t done onions this year and may not bother, leeks are just as useful and I have the perennial onions which I need to increase. I am also going to try forcing some rhubarb next spring for early, sweeter stalks, not all the plants but maybe two of them, never done it before it will be new and exciting to me 😀 Now is also the time to start preparing any beds, where the crops will soon be lifted, for next year, plenty of rotted manure on them and plenty of cover, though I have not decided what to use for that yet as the weed membrane gets ripped to bits but the wind. I did consider sewing the edges so it doesn’t happen 🙄

Thursday: Altogether a much cooler day ahead and I for one am grateful. We didn’t get anywhere near enough rain for anything but to perk up what is already growing, we still have some on the horizon for tomorrow but I think this years growing is going to be more difficult as we haven’t even got to the summer months fully yet 🙄 With the knowledge that we are only in June and it’s already a challenge I set about looking for an eco friendly weed suppressant, I found bio degradable mulch film, this will suppress weeds but also trap moisture in the ground for the plants to make use of, it can then be dug in at the end of the season. I have to weigh up the fors and against in costs, watering and the time spent watering and weeding versus the cost of the material. I will see how it goes and how cost effective it is.

As I said yesterday I am already planning for autumn/winter growing and this morning I have sown purple sprouting broccoli, one of the best hungry gap fillers you can get. I have also sown radishio (chicory) which will give a crop well into late autumn under cover and I have sown more dwarf beans and peas to extend the season, if the weather is favourable I should get a second crop. There is still plenty you can sow at the moment although space is obviously an issue as existing crops are still taking up space. One of the experiments I am pleased with is a tub of brassica leaves. I had a lot of seeds for cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower and I don’t have space in the garden for rows and rows of individual plants so I sprinkled them in compost in an old recycling box and will pick the leaves as needed, you don’t need to wait for them to get to their usual form they are edible as they are, tasty young leaves.

In the afternoon I had a look over the three rows of swede, turnip and beetroot I sowed a few weeks back, the beetroot are doing ok, the swede have a long way to go yet and hopefully with some rain they will swell eventually but the turnips are like bullets 🙄 so I will cut my losses pull them up, give the tops to the rabbits and re sow with something else I think.

When I took some of the the tops to the rabbits I could hear cheeping from the light Sussex pen, we have chicks, well at least one anyway, I went and got some chick crumb and a small drinker to put in and hopefully in a few days time they will all be running around in there. I took a photo and you can just about see a tiny beak if you zoom in close enough.

I made some garlic bread before going out to do the turnips, I hadn’t intended on doing them but just started weeding and pottering away, completely forgetting that the bread was in the oven 😜 luckily I remembered in time and I didn’t burn it 😅

The garlic that had been drying needed dealing with, it won’t store and if I leave it too long it will start trying to grow again and when you get a green shoot in garlic it makes it bitter. I peeled about 6 heads and have stored them in oil, I get two things, ready available garlic cloves and of course garlic infused olive oil to use 😀

Friday: Again, once John has done the morning rounds, it’s me on me tod here, I was enjoying lockdown with him home and hopefully he won’t book too much work in 😜 The weather, yes it’s always about the weather, is colder and pretty windy to boot 🙄 honestly couldn’t we just have a little something in-between blazing hot days and cold windy days not even any wet days to compensate. It is a least cold enough to let the plants make use of any watering I do, in the heat it was as much as they could manage to just keep going I think so with this cooler spell they should put on good growth, that’s if the wind doesn’t knock them back too much. I spent a pleasant hour or so sorting out my plant labels, the little white stick type, I have tried wooden ones but the writing runs or they rot very quickly so the next best thing is to keep re using what I have already. As the year goes on I tend to toss them into a tub and have to spend ages searching through for what I need, now they are all bagged up in their various cultivars so I should be able to access what I want quickly. I watered the big tunnel and went round securing anything that had the potential to fly in this wind, I don’t want plants to start getting broken by flying buckets etc. The three rows of carrot and one of beetroot I sowed last week have started to emerge, I am happy about that as carrot seems to be hit and miss over the last couple of years I don’t know why. With that in mind I looked up the Moon phase to see what is best sown now, we have a full moon tonight and the next phase is suited to sowing root crops and doing cuttings and division as the sap is pulled down, it’s all about the ebb and the flow just like the oceans. I will try and get some more root crops sown and I have just taken cuttings of one of my dahlias to see how that goes.

It’s early Saturday afternoon and we at last have rain 🌧 a decent enough amount so far to penetrate the soil 😀 happy me, happy vegetable garden.

This mornings work consisted of cutting back a few bits that had gone to seed such as the winter spinach and sorrel in fact I pulled up the spinach stumps and have sown some salad turnips and spring onions in there instead and late yesterday I sowed some bulb fennel in the bed next to it that had garlic in it. I also did a bit of picking, there was quite a bit really considering it’s early in the year and we have not had much rain. I pulled all the early carrots that were in the polytunnel, we have been eating them when needed but I decided to get them all up, some are now chopped and in the freezer, some in a pan along with peas and asparagus for dinner later. I picked mange-tout and pod peas, some baby beetroot, Swiss chard, and some self set potatoes, not a bad little haul for the day.

I have done a little bit of dividing up of a couple of plants, one lot were the primroses from the beginning of the year, I now have three new pots of them as well as the original three and a plant I picked up at the garden centre for half price has now been divided into four, a Tiarella, hardy perennial, spring flowering. I will put them aside to get going and I will have plenty of new plants to either sell on or fill my flower beds with 😀 As I’m typing, it is still raining 😀 I’m hoping it will at least half fill the water tanks, that would be a bonus, oh it’s raining harder also most hammering down 😀 I know I should be careful what I wish for but 🤪

Whoo hoo lovely jubbly, early evening and we have had some pretty heavy downpours, this will not only fill the water tanks , water the garden but also swell the ground water which is the most useful of all for the bigger trees 😀

It’s Johns birthday tomorrow and I have made a batch of blueberry muffins, we are hoping to have a socially distanced afternoon tea with the children and grandchildren, I have scones and sandwiches to make tomorrow, Charlie is making birthday cake, Shelley is bringing crisps and dips and Samantha is making pavlova so I think with some beers or Prosecco we have things covered 😀 just hope its dry 🤣🤣

Tonight’s job was to move the hens from the pen back to the paddock at the back and hope that the fox has found other quarry. The sunset tonight was magnificent, you will have to take my word for it as I didn’t have my phone so couldn’t get a pic but the sun was fiery orange and the billowy clouds were all different hues of stormy grey, the sun rays were streaming through the clouds, lol I wish I had got a picture now.

The hen with the pecked bum has now fully recovered and she has a fluffy bottom again and so she has gone back out with the batch we moved. Q

Sunday: Johns birthday 🍰 even when it’s your birthday there are still jobs to be done, I had set Alexa to play Happy Birthday at 6.25 and then forgot all about it until she starting up this morning, in a sleep daze I thought ‘ what the heck is going on’ 😂 We got up had breakfast and then out to do the feeding, watering, letting out and collect the duck eggs. I then went into the garden to get a few things done, the good thing about the rain is that it means I don’t have to water and so can do other things for a change instead. My brother had given me lots of big pots he no longer wanted and I spent some time potting bigger plants on. I have a Nandina (heavenly bamboo) that has been struggling for a couple of years, when I got it out of the pot the drainage holes were blocked and so I made some more, took away some of the old compost from around the roots and repotted it with some fresh compost, hopefully it will begin to pick right up now. I have two box balls that I grew from tiny plants that also needed repotting and freshening up as they have been struggling, those are now done and had a trim. A tamarisk tree in a pot that other things have self seeded alongside (foxgloves and verbena) has also had a clear out and some new compost, the foxgloves and verbena have been potted up to go out for sale once they establish. A strawberry tree that was in a broken pot (didn’t hold water very well🙄) is now in a new pot and should perk up quickly.

My sister and brother in law called in mid morning and we had coffee in the garden which was lovely, the weather has improved massively today and so it was very pleasant. When they went I made a batch of scones ready for afternoon tea later, as long as the rain holds off I think we will have a socially distanced afternoon tea picnic in the front paddock 😀

That’s where I will leave for this week, I can then enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening helping the birthday boy to celebrate. Have a great week and as always stay safe x x

Monday 11th May 2020, still in the midst of a global pandemic and this feels like the 33rd week we have been at home lol though in reality I think we are going into week 8?

As always there are plenty of jobs to keep us busy here and for that I am very grateful. Today as the weather is not as hot, generally cloudy and a bit windy, it’s perfect for me to get out on the veg garden and get some weeding done. John is also helping with the weeding which is great as we get twice as much done and are managing to get it under control. The weeds are being fed to either the hens or the rabbits/guineas and they are delighted I can tell by the squealing and clucking going on.

Tuesday: I felt tired today so didn’t achieve much, a bit of weeding and that was about it.

Wednesday: I have bloods this morning and don’t feel too bad in fact I was up first. I got dressed and opened the curtains to find a pony munching on the grass outside the window 🙄 Biscuit had managed to get out and was enjoying breakfast, I got her back in and got on with doing the feeding rounds until John came out to help. Then off to get the blood test done, stop in town on the way back to pick up a loaf of bread from the bakery and back home to get on. I watered in the brassicas I planted the other day and watered the tunnels, then some plants arrived so I potted them up and did a lot more weeding. Meanwhile John power washed the side of the stables, we need to sort the front really bit the cladding is powder coated (now peeling) so wants replacing fully I think.

I went with John in the early evening as he had a leaking outside pipe to look at, when we got back home I could see the pony had broken out again🙄 A couple of small rails had come loose and this is where she keeps getting out, when we got round to the paddock we found Jack was out as well. John grabbed a hammer and nails while I coaxed them back into their respective areas, we fixed the fence and then rigged up some electric across the gateway to keep Jack in his field as he has now broken the slip rail posts. To be fair the posts are totally rotten so it doesn’t take much for a half ton horse to push and break them. Looks like fencing will be on the to do list tomorrow 😜

I keep breaking out in little rashes everywhere and they are really itchy and driving me mad, I have had them on my thighs, stomach, arms and hands urgh I will be glad when they can sort out my meds and get back to something near normal.

Thursday: John did the morning rounds while I had a shower 😀 and then he went off to do a small job and I pottered around in the garden. I planted a few little bits and then stood back and had a look at the garden, I’m pretty pleased with how it is all going this year. The notion of a small forest garden is actually staring to come to fruition, the beds are a good mix of flowers, fruit bushes, fruit trees and vegetables, it’s not there yet but defiantly going in the right direction.

I had a call from the doctor and although the white bloods cells have gone up, the platelets haven’t, it’s definitely a Lupus flare and so what they have decided to do is hit it hard with steroids (which is what I always say needs doing in the first place lol) and change my immune suppressant drug. The methotrexate never seemed to control the Lupus and so I am moving onto a drug called Mycophenalate a disease modifying drug that still needs blood tests to monitor the liver and kidneys and make sure they are not adversely affected. We wait with baited breath the see how it goes 🙄

I have realised just how much I have fallen in love with flowers again now that I have plenty more growing. Geums and aquilegia are my favourites at the minute, the geums are delightful, vibrant and bring a lovely splash of colour to the garden, the aquilegia are romantically reminiscent of a garden in an age gone by, probably why they are known as granny’s bonnet 😀

Friday: I have been quite busy today, after waiting in an hour queue for meds that is lol. I have been gardening and planting in between the sun going behind the clouds which is far more difficult than it sounds 😜 I had a look at the long range forecast and have hedged my bets on planting out the squash plants, so courgettes, patty pan, butternut squash are all planted along with the first block of sweet corn. I weeded and hoed the bed that the pumpkins are going into but haven’t planted them yet, I will have to keep and eye on the forecasts and cover them if it looks like a frost but I can’t see one coming for a couple of weeks at least so I’m taking the chance.

Apparently I ordered something called yacon which arrived today lol so I have planted them as well.

‘Part of the gourmet roots collection. Yacon means ‘water root’ in the Aztec language. The largest tuber you can grow in the UK, producing very crisp and juicy red roots. Sweet tasting due to the amount of inulin present, which is good for diabetics as its not sugar. Tall plants which produce sunflower-like blooms. Can be eaten raw or cooked, tastes like fresh pear/water-chestnut.’

Late afternoon the farrier came to do the horses, glad to say they are looking good at the moment and no sign of laminitis fingers crossed they stay that way 🙄

I ordered some anti bird netting for the cherry tree, I am determined to get at least some of the cherries this year, last year it was the blackbirds that stole them and the year before the crows, I don’t mind some of them but they strip the trees before the cherries are even ripe 🙄

We managed to get a claim in for the self employed help from the government, it was just for John as his work has been adversely affected but I won’t be claiming as the Farm did better throughout than it normally does due to high demand for eggs and plants 😀

Saturday: Another nice day and another day dodging the sun between the clouds, makes for a long job I can tell you 😀 I had an objective and that was achieved so I am pleased about that, I wanted to get the rest of the peas in and the dwarf beans, that fills a bed and then I put the drip feed hose on which is buried under ground so that the roots all had a good soak. I did want to get the pumpkins in but not quite managed that today. John has been busy cleaning out the hen hut, just waiting for some creosote to arrive and then he can do that before the hens go back out there. We fixed some of the fencing first thing and then went to pick up the rest of my prescription and called at the garden centre on the way back as I wanted some big pots, the queue was quite long and in the sun so we gave that a miss lol.

I had some daisy type plants arrive in the afternoon so I potted them on, most will be going out for sale once established but some I will keep for the garden. I am enjoying filling blocks of the garden with flowers, in the beginning it was all veg and for a good few years after but now I am changing my outlook and loving it. Some areas of the garden need a total rethink because I can’t get to them to weed them very well, the sun bits first thing in the morning and is there all day long so I need some serious research on what to put there to keep it under control a bit better without too much work.

Sunday: oooooh we had a lay in today, most unusual for us but we didn’t get up until 8.45 😱 A lovely morning though, overcast but warm by the time we got out there, I spent a good while watering a few things just to get them firmly established. Feed the ponies, feed the tortoises, make sure the greenhouse is all watered for a warm day ahead, chat over the gate to eggs customers. John did the rest of the feeding rounds and we have an egg from the new pullets 😀 just need the other 11 to lay now. He did a bit of weeding around the rhubarb, the weeds go to the hens that are inside a secure pen at the minute because of the fox trouble we have been having.

I ordered some Oca tubers to grow, I have done these before and they are small and fiddly but nice tasting and something a bit different.

And then I ordered a takeaway Sunday roast from a local pub as a bit of a treat, roast beef with all the trimmings and a pudding to boot, happy days 😀

Totally delicious and I had a strawberry waffle for pudding so now I’m totally stuffed and need a lay on the sofa for an hour or so 😂

Have a great week and continue to stay safe x x

What day is it? 😂 a missing guinea pig, did the cat do it? 🤔

I Monday 30 March 2020: And just like that it’s Monday again 😜 albeit different Mondays to what we once had as obviously John is at home. This morning he went out first thing to get the van an MOT, the government announced, the day after he had booked it in, that MOTs would be extended for 6 months but as it was already booked he went ahead with it as once things get back to normal he can just get on with work. It went through without any problems so that’s a bonus. He had to walk around outside for an hour while they did it and he was freezing when he got back, we went through the usual questions, did you wipe everything down before you touched it, 5e handles, the steering wheel, the gearstick, the keys 😂 such a lot to remember to do, but yes he was thorough he said. Meanwhile I did the morning rounds and once he was back he cut up some more of our (now shrinking rapidly) mountain of wood. I spent the first half of the morning sorting out the hazel trees at the side, they are grown and pruned the old fashioned way, I know this because I was told by an arborist that ‘you don’t see them done like that these days’. I have tried to research it but there is not much information out there, they have six trunks each and any growth is pruned off at the bottom third. They were like this when we came so we have kept them the same except the odd trunk that has fallen or the ones we pruned right back to allow summer light to the poly tunnels. They end up with a fair amount of debris under them so I pruned all the new unwanted growth out and then John helped me to shred the prunnings, rake out underneath, sweep the pathway and find nails 🙄 The nails are from the ash which is riddled out of the Rayburn, we use all kinds of wood and a lot of pallets so there are nails, screws, staples etc in the ash. We have a big magnet and the idea is to go through it often and get them out but as it’s usually cold over winter that job gets overlooked and so it ends up a spring job and today was a good enough day to do it. We came in at 2pm for some lunch and then John went to deliver some eggs, doorstep delivery, stand back and wait for the customer to put the money on the step and go back in, strange times but necessary distancing.

In the afternoon or what was left of it I made bread, and double choc chip cookies and lit the Rayburn while John did the afternoon feeding and egg collecting. Then it rained, only a quick shower so not too bad at least the ground will remain dry, it’s so much nicer without mud underfoot lol.

It seems that all this social distancing and closing of bars, clubs, restaurants etc has given a glimmer of hope in that the numbers going into hospital and the numbers that are dying has slowed very slightly. It’s a strange world we find ourselves in where we can’t see family members or friends, we can’t go out to places we normally would go, we can only do the necessary and that is shopping, an hours walk for exercise (and no driving to your destination), or going for medication/doctors appointments, work if it’s necessary and you can’t do it at home. Most people I know are adhering to this but I’m sure there are plenty out there who are not, I expect further restrictions will come soon.

Tuesday: The days are beginning to blur into any old day lol. Dry again today, sunny spells and warm when the sun is out but cold when it’s hiding behind the clouds. We did the morning rounds and then got on with moving the wood chip (it’s finished 😀😀) well actually John moved the wood chip while I did some hoeing/weeding and cutting back dead stuff, watering the greenhouse and the seeds I have sown, generally pottering is what I have been doing. The turkey hen looks a little off colour, I have given her a good check over and can’t see anything wrong with her, she isn’t egg bound and she doesn’t have an impacted crop, I’m hoping it’s a blip and she will perk up, she is still eating and drinking just a little unhappy looking. We have another anomaly that I haven’t worked out, a missing guinea pig, one disappeared a few weeks ago and we bolstered up the run to make sure they couldn’t get out and now another has gone 🤔 no sign of fur and it definitely can’t get out, my theory is the cat, there is a bit where the cat could get in if it really wanted to, we will be shutting them in the hut tonight which they are not used so that will be fun trying to catch them.

We did plenty of little jobs about the place in the afternoon, I did some weeding and tidying of borders and John did something though I’m not sure what. At dusk I went out to put the rabbits/guineas away and yes that was a mission, the rabbits went in fine but guineas a very fast when they want to be lol in the end I dropped a tea towel over the end of its tunnel and caught it li,e that bit I spent a good 10 mins trying to catch it before hand.

Wednesday: Dry again although it was pretty cold over night, the temperature was not bad though, workable. After the morning rounds I went and got the turkey a bowl of warm water with garlic powder, oil and cider vinegar as she is definitely not right, I also gave her some meds in case it’s cocci which it may well be and if it is we will probably lose her. There is usually blood in the poo if it’s cocci and she doesn’t have any, could be that she has eaten something that she didn’t ought to have but there is only her food and grass/bugs etc 🤷‍♀️

Then I spent a lovely morning tidying up some rough areas of the garden, we get a lot of broken branches over winter so I had a fire in the incinerator and raked up dead wood and leaves. I have unpacked and laid out my seep hoses ready for watering the beds, I bought three last year as I really don’t want to spend so much time doing it this year, they need to rest once unpacked otherwise they coil back up again, I found a mouse in one of the bags, nice little nest it had in there lol. John found some metal grill to cover up the hole into the rabbit run. We have never had a problem before and the hole is above waist height and very narrow so a fox couldn’t get through, however a cat well that’s another thing altogether. My suspicions got stronger later when I saw Benny slink along the paddock fence towards the back of the rabbit run, I watched from a distance but then he spotted me and came running over, I’m pretty sure the cat has been snacking on guinea pig 🤬.

We had a birthday FaceTime party this morning, for Mum this time, everyone recorded birthday messages and sent them via the family chat and then video conferencing took place lol, we can’t all get on at the same time but with people dropping in and out I think everyone managed at some point.

Thursday: Another day in paradise 🙄 we have slowed our pace a little now, still doing jobs but pottering rather than going full steam ahead. John is still cutting wood 😂 it will be great to see it all cut up and stacked for next winter. I am pottering doing household bits and gardening bits depending on how the mood takes me. This morning I have potted on some of the seedlings, patty pan, pumpkins and some morning glory. I keep looking to see what else I can start sowing but at the minute the greenhouse is pretty full. I will have to do some more cucumbers as I forgot to turn the heated propagator on one evening and they suffered because of it, some are hanging in there but some have had it, roll on some warmer days. Everything else is growing well, the aubergine, peppers and tomatoes are going strong g as are the peas and beans. I have salad lettuce on the go and some leek seeds I found have sprouted, plenty to keep me busy, on top of that there are flower seedlings and plants to nurture. The dahlias look like they are waking up which is fab as I didn’t think they would make it, these are the ones I left in pots, the tubers I stored have not shown any signs yet but it’s early days for them as they need to establish a root system first.

I had a phone call this morning from Dad to say that his partner Sue is in hospital after falling and smashing her kneecap, it’s about the worst time that could happen. I will be phoning him every day to see how he is doing on his own but he does have good neighbours who are already looking out for them. He can’t visit Sue as the hospital says no visits, they are probably going to operate and hopefully they will get her home again quickly. Its a worry as we can’t get to them to visit or help out 😏

I am making bread again today and spent a whole evening trying to find bread flour online in the end I managed to get 10kg so that will keep us going. I was disgusted to see people profiteering from the shortage, I have seen 1kg of flour for sale on eBay for £50 AND it had bidders, what is this world coming to, sheer greed, sad individuals 😢

We have taken to watching the live daily updates from Downing Street, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson is himself one self isolation after testing positive for COVID-19 so at the moment it’s other ministers delivering the updates. What is amazing is the way industries and companies that wouldn’t normally work together, are pulling out all the stops to get new products or products they don’t normally make, up and running, hats off to them and just goes to show what can be achieved in a short space of time when it’s really needed. Tonight the country will go outside and clap in appreciation of the NHS and all the key workers that are keeping the country running, it’s quite emotional to hear the sound of people uniting for a cause.

Getting the dinner tonight I realise that today is the first day I am feeling bored with all this which sounds petulant but it’s just how I’m feeling, I know we can’t change it but I am thinking how nice it would be getting a takeaway or going out to eat instead of doing the cooking every day lol. I am missing my family, FaceTime is not quite the same as real hugs. Tomorrow night I have Gardeners’ world to look forward to lol and tonight after dinner I may treat myself to a cherry coke and some chocolate 😝

Friday: Normally I love Fridays, they are the last day of the working week for us and a prelude to the weekend, now one day is pretty much like another 😜 and every day is the weekend! This morning we have done the usual rounds and then John fixed a few little things that needed doing, a gate that didn’t shut properly, the weatherboard on my greenhouse door before returning to cutting wood. Meanwhile I did one of my favourite jobs of the day now things are growing well and that is picking herbs and weeds for the rabbits/guineas. Today they had a mix of parsley, grass, dandelion, dead nettle, mint and sprouting broccoli that had gone to seed, the reason I love it is the smell, it’s amazing and then there are the delighted squeals from the guineas 😀 I did a bit of potting on in the greenhouse and sowed some more peas and some sunflowers.

In the afternoon I started off tidying up the front driveway, the edges get over grown and the debris from winter is usually stuck to the ground, John came and gave me a hand for a little while before it was time to collect the eggs. Charlie and Macca came over to drop off some shopping they got for us, just a few bits mostly for John, sausages, bacon and cheese, some bananas for me and a cherry coke.

I had a phone call in the afternoon and it was great to hear Sue on the other end, she has had her kneecap pinned back together and they have let her go home which is great news.

Saturday: A fine warm day is on the cards for today so we should get some jobs done. John did some wood cutting 😂 I did some seed sowing and some planting of seedlings outside. I am concentrating on fast growing crops such as micro greens (broccoli, celery, cabbage) which I mixed together and sowed into a container in the small tunnel and then covered with a pane of greenhouse glass so the mice don’t eat them. I sowed various lettuce/salad leaves in the big tunnel and covered with bubble wrap. I also planted a two rows of beetroots plantings and some mangetout outside. I spent a bit of time weeding the big tunnel and laying membrane down, it dose t look pretty but it will mean I can spend more time of the plants I want rather than the weeds I don’t. I found a froglet in there, that’s my slug control sorted 😀

I asked John to power wash the decking area as using it is his favourite job 😝 and he also reconnected the main water pipes outside, if it looks like the weather might turn to freezing we will have to undo them again but for now they will be useful for filling up water tubs as the big water tanks are getting low.

The longer this virus situation goes on the more bizarre it feels 🙄 hopefully a once in a lifetime occurrence but if not they will know what to or what not to do next time.

I made some yoghurt, well it is in the process of being made, I don’t make it from scratch I’m not that much of a yoghurt lover but I do have a yearning for something different to eat and I don’t have to go to the shops to get it. I bought a yoghurt maker over a year ago when I was eating it for breakfast regularly (a phase I go through now and again) I buy the sachets and mostly they are plain Greek yoghurt but I think there was a free trial of coconut and mango so that’s what I have on the go. I’m glad we already had food stocks and haven’t had to get very much at all, it’s fresh fruit and salad stuff that I yearn for, for John it’s sausages, bacon and cheese. We are lucky that the girls will get what we need and deliver it, charlie dropped off some bits yesterday but it’s not the same and strolling along the isles deciding what you fancy 😜

Sunday: Well what can I say about today that I haven’t already said for every day lol, eat, sleep, work, watch evening tv, repeat 😂 Actually it has been quite a nice day although the weather didn’t really live up to my expectations, wind wasn’t factored in to sunny weather. This morning we had a visit from my sister and her hubby, they came to gets eggs but it means we can have a chat over the gate. They bought their own mugs so we could make them a cuppa 🤣 the scenario goes something like this: she places the cups on the ground and steps back, I get the cups, I go inside wash hands (because I touched the cups) make the tea, put their cups on a tray, wash hands (now I can carry the tray) take it outside place tray on the floor, they pick up the cups by the handle, voila I think we got it covered 🤔 It was a nice interlude and a lovely chat in the morning sunshine.

Other jobs of the day included stripping the bed and getting the washing out on the line, good job it was breezy as it dried in no time, making bread and rock cakes and I took an hour off to sit outside on the newly cleaned decking to read my book. It’s an I interesting book, I got it for Christmas but it’s especially poignant now as it is a post apocalypse novel. When I say post I mean around 1000 years after something terrible wiped out society as we know it, the lastest clue (as I’m only a third of the way through) is that the ‘episode’ happened in 2025, how appropriate is that and it seems to be a disease that wiped them out though that remains to be seen 🙄 It’s now one and a half thousand years later and life has very much gone backwards! John as usual has been cutting wood 😂 and apparently (I haven’t actually looked yet) he cleaned and hoovered the back toilet, wonders will never cease.

A selection of veg plants growing nicely and lovely temps in the greenhouse 😀

Muddling on, madness & Mothers Day

Monday March 16th 2020: A cold start to the day but it yielded a glorious day which I took full advantage of. I started off indoors hoovering and polishing so that I could dedicate more time to outside 😋 Once the animal rounds were done I took the dahlia tubers from the back toilet and potted them up in order to begin waking them up, they are now in the large tunnel. The dahlias are a bit of a faff but I am enjoying growing them so until I get fed up of digging them up and storing them I will continue. I also potted up some of the freesia bulbs, I experimented by digging half up and leaving half in the ground, the ones in the ground have done well and not rotted so that’s a win. I’m hoping the temps keep climbing as sharing the floor in the greenhouse with Big Billy is proving difficult lol, and he keeps lying behind the door so it’s hard to get in, also I remembered that Voldertort likes to go for feet, luckily he hasn’t come out yet but when he does they will have to go outside I think. I did a bit of weeding and planted a couple of plants and some more garlic bulbs which have started to sprout. It was lovely working out in the warm, the kind of weather I have been waiting for 😀

The afternoon was a much more frantic affair, we had a delivery of 40 pullets and a large delivery of feed which will keep us going for a couple of months. To be fair if we ran out of feed the birds would just have to manage on forage, they would lay less eggs but they wouldn’t starve. At about this point, which was 3pm ish we ran out of chicken eggs, this is because within two customers this morning most of the eggs were gone! I’m hoping it was a fluke and that people are not panic buying them, the hens lay every day and so the same number are always available, no need to stash them. So while I am trying to get water and feed for the new hens (which will hopefully start to lay pretty quickly) a customer was shouting over the gate because we had run out of eggs. I hate being put under pressure and we have had a good run of being able to keep the egg shed stocked but I then had to think about doing the egg collecting sharpish.

The first of our daily updates from the government indicates that life is about to get difficult, we are advised to avoid social contact, unnecessary contact and travel, work from home if possible ✅ to isolate the whole house for 14 days if one person has symptoms, and that vulnerable people should be shielded for up to 12 weeks, that’s anyone who it’s recommended has a flu jab, that’s me 😏 I don’t mind telling you, it’s a real worry, I worry about Mum and Ken so far away from any of us, I worry about Charlie who is an NHS dental nurse, I worry about Shelley and Sam and the kiddies, strange times indeed. We are all trying as hard as we can to isolate ourselves, John is on a job for two weeks but when that’s done, if not before, he will not go to work anymore for the time being.

Tuesday: A duller morning but not too bad at the minute, dry but rain coming later. I did the rounds and put out what few eggs I picked up but they are getting snapped up quickly, even the duck eggs are flying off the shelf which is unheard of 🤔

I spent the morning in the greenhouse, watering and sowing a few seeds, wallflowers, ranunculus corms and some leek seeds I had saved from last year. I also sowed a row of little gem lettuce and some wild rocket inbetween the rows of garlic in the poly tunnel. I shall keep sowing as much as I can, it keeps me busy and hopefully will keep us fed.

The situation in this country and others is changing fast every day sometimes minute to minute. Many people I know are practising significant social distancing already and I imagine it’s going to get a lot tougher in the next couple of weeks.

Wednesday: I was determined to get outside and away from any media this morning, I’m finding that I end up with a headache at the end of the day probably due to heightened anxiety and some outdoor work is the cure 😀 This morning after doing the rounds I did end up with umpteen messages pinging back and forth but after that I went out and did some hand weeding. It’s therapeutic at the best of times and a welcome interlude today, I weeded and tided the asparagus bed as these will be the next veg to start making an appearance although I did notice a small artichoke forming so that’s good news as well.

I try and run my day so that I do outside work in the morning when I have plenty of energy and then come in for lunch and do household stuff in the afternoon before having to go back out to do the afternoon feeding and egg collecting, it seems to work well enough.

I’ve had to put a notice on the egg shed as we are selling out of chicken eggs quickly each time I put them out, I have noticed a few ‘new’ customers I hope they keep coming even after the crisis is over 🤔

I get a lot of time to think about things and one thing I hope people take on board is having a buffer for future events, it strikes me that so many people spend everything they have on ‘stuff’ bigger houses, newer cars, more holidays, all the gear, that they are totally reliant on that pay check coming in to keep them going. I guess it will be a lesson well learnt to figure out that there are there are things that can put that all into jeopardy and in a short space of time to. I guess what I am trying to say is people need to be more self reliant across the board if you get my meaning.

Had a stressful couple of hours this afternoon, I had an egg customer sat waiting for eggs after I put out a notice due to the shortages at times, so was under pressure to get the eggs out in the shelf, meanwhile the carbon monoxide alarm was going off 😮 so open all doors and windows, I think a seal has gone on the flue. In between that I was trying to arrange a payment for something in Spain and probably because I was rushing I kept getting locked out of online banking 🤷‍♀️ All sorted in the end, I hate it when everything happens at once, I want my orderly days back lol.

Thursday: It’s raining this morning which is a bummer because I went to bed thinking about the jobs I would do in the morning and now they are scuppered as they were mostly on the garden 😏

At the moment although I am social distancing, John is still working, he is working at one house and limiting contact with anyone else, though I think by the weekend we will be more restricted. He did go out to the shop last night, I asked for oranges and bananas and some cucumber for the torts, there was 1 orange left, no bananas and two halves of marked down cucumber, he did manage to get two Easter eggs 😂 some bread rolls and some cheese. Although we are face timing, I miss seeing the children and grandchildren in the flesh lol, the kids kind of understand that we have to do this until the virus is gone but it’s hard going and we are only at the beginning. Mum and Ken have decided to sit tight in Spain, they might as well as driving through Spain and France at the minute would be extremely difficult and they would be going from one bad situation into another as it stands now they will be through this before us and at least they will have some nice weather 😀

It’s rumoured that the army are on standby to be deployed here, doing what is yet to be seen, the schools and colleges are closing from Friday only key worker and vulnerable children will attend, its all closing down slowly. I fully agree with the way the government are listening to scientists and doing what needs to be done at the right time, their strategy seems logical to me.

Not only have the chicken and duck eggs sales gone barmy now we have people looking for chickens to keep 🙄 Obviously I will not be selling hens to anyone that hasn’t kept them before, the hens welfare is always top priority but more so in times like these.

I’m going to have to change a few things around here as we have hit barmyville today 😝 First off as mentioned a sharp increase in enquiries of hens for sale, going to have to protect the ones we have I think 🤔 I had someone come to buy 4 I made them wait at the gate while I got them, standing six feet away while I left the wheelbarrow with the crate of hens then got them to put the money in the barrow, then I had an older customer who has been coming for years came and the only eggs I had were ones not yet put out so I hid them in an amazon box and took them out to her so anyone arriving would not see I had given them to her. Finally despite a note in the shed saying if we are sold out do not ring the bell, I had a customer come marching across the drive to the door, I went out the back and pretended I didn’t hear the knock, it seems no matter what you tell people they don’t listen, I say finally but after putting eggs out I was making a cuppa, I could see people who obviously had never been before, they had three boxes of eggs and when I checked the money later after sales it was short 😤 Could have been anyone but it’s bad form people. So I think tomorrow I will shut the very front gate with a closed until 4pm sign, take the roadside board in so we are not getting people who have not been before and then limit customers to a dozen eggs, not really what we should have to do, seeing the best and the worst of people at the minute.

History in the making is what we are witnessing in these fraught times, the interest rates here have been cut again to the lowest EVER 0.1% We see countries in lockdown all over the world, the armies are out on the streets in some of them, you can’t find a toilet roll for love nor money, crazy times people.

Unbelievable, I thought my day of fucktardness had finished but no, I asked John to shut the very front gate as we had sold out of eggs, a while later a car pulls up to the gate someone gets out realises the gate is shut and they can’t open it and then proceeds to climb over the fence and walk up the driveway!

Friday: Still cold but dry this morning. After yesterday’s shenanigans we made the decision to close the front gate with a notice saying ‘closed, eggs will be available at 4pm’ this gives me peace of mind that I am not going to be hunted down and that I am not constantly worrying about people arriving to no eggs. The fact that I have seen reports on poultry groups that people are having their hens stolen is another worry, honestly what the hell is wrong with people 😏 John is finishing today, he is in the middle of doing a bathroom but if he leaves it now it is still fully functional just not finished, if he carries on next week and the suppliers shut down he will be scuppered so makes sense to stop at a good point.

This morning I did the usual rounds then a few bits of tidying up on the yard and in the stable block, and took the horses some hay putting up at the far end of the paddocks so that they actually have to move from the front, right to the back to get it lol, since they discovered the side paddock was open they haven’t left it at all🙄

I’m sat here in the afternoon hiding again, a planned one this time as Sam has come over to get the horses in because the farrier is coming first thing in the morning. I am hiding because she has Mia with her and if she knows I am in she will want to come in and see me, she won’t understand why that can’t happen, it’s so sad that we have to do this but we are protecting not just myself but others in the family with health issues. I hate that this virus has deprived me of precious time with the grandchildren we still FaceTime but it’s not like real hugs and kisses

So the gate was opened at 4pm and it was mental, by 4.15 we had sold all the duck and chicken eggs, it was car after car coming in, add to that the amount of enquiries about point of lay chickens and people coming to get them, just bonkers today 🙄

Saturday: A cold start but dry and with the promise of some sunshine. We did the morning rounds, the farrier was here bright and early at 7.30am then onto the jobs of the day. John went off to get some fire cement for the flue and then replaced the broken fire cement and the fire rope of the flue. He then went to get some compost so I can carry on potting on and seed growing, after that he spent most of the day cutting up wood. I topped up bedding in the duck and goose house then cleaned out the quail, after that I was free to potter in the greenhouse, watering and potting on. I also had a look round at what I had, a few leeks that didn’t get planted last year, same with a tray of garlic and some welsh onions that I separated at the end of last year. All of these I have now planted, not wasting anything this year so spaces were found to pop them in. I also have some strawberry plants that I had put out for sale but I got them back in and potted them up, I will need as much as I can grow especially soft fruit for the grandchildren so might as well use them myself. I have raspberry/blackcurrant and gooseberry bushes that I potted up last year that I can also use to increase yields. We got ready for the 4pm onslaught again today but it was much less frantic more of a steady stream.

People are starting to understand that we need to stay home more and more but there are plenty out there who are not getting it (usually in a supermarket queue).

I am hugely proud, and also terrified at the same time, to tell you that our youngest daughter Charlotte, who is an NHS dental nurse, has put herself forward and will be working with a dedicated team in a dedicated surgery to provide emergency dental care for patients with confirmed covid-19. As soon as I heard there was a possibility that her practice had been designated I knew she would volunteer to be on the team, that’s my girl 🥰 and there are thousands of NHS workers doing the exact same thing so please don’t go out unnecessarily, flatten the curve and give them a fighting chance to deal with this crisis.

Sunday: A cold start again but that soon blossomed into a beautiful day, the wind was still cold at times but the heat of the sun could be felt which is the main thing. It is of course Mother’s Day and the 2020 version is very different to previous years, a quote I like is ‘who would have thought that the best thing you can give your Mother today is distance’ sad but true. Despite the distancing we have managed, I managed to find somewhere in Spain to get a pot plant to my Mum, my girls have managed to get an afternoon tea delivery to me (and some for John of course 😜) Charlie and Macca walked over and we stood in the driveway having a conversation with distance between us, we exchanged goodies by placing them on the floor then stepping back lol, the likes of these things only ever seen in movies before now.

Other than that John is still cutting wood, he said he ‘liked being forced not to have to go to work’ I think it’s different to taking a week off and feeling under pressure about the workload he would have to go back to. I know it will be stressful for a lot of people but for a few it will relieve the stress. Meanwhile I have been baking some bread and doing some bits of gardening, getting the beds ready for planting into when the time comes to plant out. We are keeping a very close eye on the weather so that we can drag the fields as soon as possible, the ground is slowly drying out which will make living conditions for the birds a lot easier than it has been all winter.

I wish you all well this week coming and never have I written that before with more sincerity than now.

A pandemic, turkey eggs & the first rhubarb

Monday 9th March 2020: Well it’s me on me tod this morning and it’s been an interesting start to the day. Firstly, the horse was out, how come it happens on my shift? This time of the year the grass is growing but not very fast and to be honest there is not a lot of foraging left in the paddock they are the in so I have opened up the side paddock for them as well although by lunchtime they still hadn’t noticed 😂 The second event was the helimed trying to land, it came low over our place and our neighbours twice, at this point I had not let the chickens out so I waited to see where they wanted to go, they landed further up the lane. I messaged my neighbour to make sure she was alright and nothing had happened at her place, I later found out it was an elderly lady just up the lane and I hope she is alright.

Excitements over I finished the morning rounds and then did a bit of pottering round the place, a few barrowfulls of compost on the veg beds, moving the branches from the pruned apple tree, nothing much but a little bit here and there. At lunchtime someone came to get duck eggs, these I have been saving for them to hatch out as part of child minding activities fingers crossed they are viable.

Sam came over in the afternoon with the children, we talked about the corona virus situation as it’s on everybody’s mind (makes a change from the weather) I think it’s prudent to have at least some idea of the measures you would take if the situation gets worse, though of course we can’t make definite plans as no one really knows how this will pan out.

I made bread in the afternoon, turned out really well, not the usual bread flour I buy nor the usual yeast as none of that was available at the shop but a happy discovery of a better product 😀

Tuesday: A quiet morning rounds this morning, the rain was hard in the night knocking off the electric 🙄 but a flick of a switch and it was back on. The wind is strong this morning hopefully that will dry up some of the ground and we are forecast a sunny afternoon so I will wait with anticipation to see if that is the case.

The Coronavirus situation is worsening daily especially in Italy which is virtually locked down, is this nature’s way of getting its house in order I wonder sometimes 🤔 We can only watch and wait to see what happens, ‘keep calm and carry on’ is an English mantra we are used to guess it’s time to practice it 😀 Naturally I am worried as I am on immunosuppressive medication, I wonder if I stopped taking it, if I got the virus, it would kick it into touch, does it work like that? I have no idea, I guess I would find out if I do get infected 😏

In light of the situation and the fact I have plenty of room to grow food, I will be growing as much as possible this year, I think it’s prudent to do so. The ground is still too wet to be sowing directly into so module sowing is the way forward for me this year.

Tuesday: A morning where the weather can’t quite make up its mind, it’s mild so that’s a good start, sometimes sunshine, sometime spits of rain a little wind every now and again a mixed bag it’s fair to say. I did the morning rounds topping up the goose hut with new straw, then onto the rest of the feeding and I found our very first turkey egg (well chuffed). After that it was into the greenhouse to sow a few seeds and generally have a look how things are progressing in there (doing well) onto watering the garlic and then have a look at the potatoes in their sacks and we have greenery appearing already so I gave them some water. I wanted to get a particular area weeded so I tried hoeing but it’s too wet still so I hand weeded a couple of other small areas, I really want to stay on top of it so that there is not all to do at once. I also checked the tortoises as I would have expected movement from them by now, I tentatively had a looked and I am pleased to say that a foot moved so that’s a good sign, they are still alive at least. I am waiting for this elusive sun to move them outside and also the quail, they have been in the back all winter and I just need it to warm up a little before putting them back outside in the fresh air.

1st Turkey egg 😀
1st picking of this years rhubarb 😀

Wednesday: I seem to have lost a day lol no idea what I did today 😜

Thursday: I am so sick of this weather now, this morning was vile, yesterday the ground was beginning to show good signs of drying out and then in the evening the rain started and didn’t stop all night. This morning it’s raining and blowing a hoolie, vile and I am delaying going out to do the morning rounds.

An hour later and the sun was shinning although the wind is still blowing and it’s a cold wind, come on already we just want some warmer, drier days, it’s been a very long few months.

The turkey laid again today 😀 can’t wait to put them out for sale and see who is willing to try them, I need to eat one first just so I can say what they taste like. I’m not expecting them to be much different to a chicken egg to be honest but people do ask so best to be prepared with an answer.

Apart from the usual I have been watching the news bulletins and as I write this an emergency Cobra meeting is taking place to decide the next steps and measures. Today the USA has banned flights from Europe which has caused uproar but I’m of the opinion that they may be right to do so, I can’t understand the seemly lax attitude here to travellers arriving from affected areas 🤷‍♀️ Ireland has now moved to closing schools and colleges and banning large gatherings, I’m guessing we may be following suit fairly soon.

Friday: A glorious start to the day, warm enough to venture to the egg shed in just a long sleeved t-shirt but it hasn’t lasted and the sun has now gone in lol. Morning rounds done and dusted, eggs sorted, it was time to go and get my bloods checked 🙄. I think I can safely say that the nervousness is palpable especially in a doctors waiting room, interestingly, I have more than the usual bloods today, checking thyroid levels and blood pressure plus questions, a more overall look at my health I would say.

I make no apologies for continuing to write about the situation the world has found itself in, this after all is a diary blog and at the moment it is a very big part of life. Although we are not at the self isolate stage we are practising social distancing that means we will not be putting ourselves in a position of being with people more than is very necessary. A play I was due to see next week has sensibly been cancelled and we will avoid any social gatherings, we were due to go on a cruise in June, that will now be cancelled. To me this is not over reaction it is sensible precaution and I don’t understand why a lot of people are just not getting the potential of the seriousness of this pandemic 🤷‍♀️ We are apparently 4 weeks behind Italy and they are in a dire situation, life is not as we know it and we need to adjust our thinking. One thing I have found out about myself is that I am much more in the self sufficient group than the smallholder group, I realise they are two different things with some overlap but definitely different. Self sufficiency is just that, it’s about relying on your own efforts to maintain a living/life, it’s about having the skills to do what needs to be done and not relying on others to do it for you, paid or otherwise and fundamentally it’s about having an attitude of self preservation. With all that in mind I have ordered a large first aid kit the reason is that when this epidemic is at its height the NHS will be stretched to the maximum and beyond so it is prudent to have to hand a kit that will cover any emergency until help arrives or basics so that a trip to the doctors is not necessary immediately. I like being self sufficient/reliant I think it’s good for the soul to know you can manage if TSHTF 😜

Well it definitely feels more spring like out there today thank goodness. I did some pottering in the greenhouse, a bit of watering and turning, I also have some hardy fushia plug plants arrive that I have potted up. Fifteen of them lol, I won’t be keeping all of them some will be sold on but that will pay for the ones I keep. I am really pleased with how well the greenhouse is performing it’s made such a difference to getting things successfully started, I have high hopes this year, now if I can just stop everything eating it I will be very happy.

Saturday: If I open the top of my stable door in the kitchen, as I often do, and look out to the garden and paddocks, it seems like any ordinary day, like hundreds before, except it’s not and we are in unchartered territory. There are countries going into lockdown and panic buying in the shops 🙄 We went yesterday to get some bits (cat milk because he doesn’t know there is a problem and still yowls for his milk) and some of the shelves were just ransacked, not all there is still plenty of fresh fruit and veg but canned goods were sparse in some sections, there are no ibrufen or paracetamol to be had, no sanitiser or antibacterial goods, there were toilet rolls but only a few packs, still no bread flour or any flour for that matter. I’ve e no doubt the shop will have restocked by now but it’s flying out as fast as it comes in!

My Mum and Ken went to Spain for three months after Christmas, they were due to start driving home on the 30th March, it looks like they will be staying longer than planned. It’s a worry because we can’t get to them if they become ill but they have managed to get a few provisions and we will see how this pans out, it’s all we can do, I know she reads this blog so lots and lots of love to you Mum and stay well 😘😘

Meanwhile on the farm John and I have been working and if you don’t have the radio or tv on you would be forgiven for not having a clue as to the events unfolding. John went to get a new blade for his saw so that if he is off for any length of time he can cut up wood 😂 He also picked up dog and cat food to keep us going. When he came back he power washed the side pathway this is because as I was going out to the egg shed I slipped and fell with a thud. The path is east facing and in the winter doesn’t dry out much and so algae builds up and makes it slippery, I think I will ache tonight but luckily I didn’t break anything.

After that we spent a good couple of hours mending the roof on the outdoor tortoise house. I heard a shuffling in the greenhouse this morning and Big Billy has woken up proper and was trying to get out of the cage. I got him some water and some bits of aloe Vera in case he was hungry and then thought I need to fix the roof, so that’s what we did, and a pretty good job we did of it even if I do say so myself 😀 John then carried on cutting up wood while I lit the Rayburn and got some lunch. Charlie and Macca called in for a coffee and some eggs.

We were expecting patchy rain today but we are into early evening and no sign of it so we had a good run of getting some things done. The ground is beginning to dry out faster than it was before bough it is still soggy.

Sunday: It’s raining heavily this morning and so not a very nice morning at all, to be honest the weather is now the least of our worries 😏 John did the morning rounds while I did the indoor bits, we lit the Rayburn early and we are not planning on doing much today except visit Florence for cake later as it’s her 2nd birthday today 😀

I’m feeling rather vindicated this morning, if you have been reading my blogs for a long time you will have read about my thoughts on an ‘apocalypse’ 🙄 at times I thought maybe I was a bit batty going on about preparing for a ‘situation’ such as this but it seemed obvious to me that something would happen eventually. This situation is a virus but potentially it could have been war or a terrorist attack on the ‘grid’ both of which would have been much worse as far as human nature goes, at the moment it’s toilets rolls, hand sanitiser and ibrufen people are fighting over 🤔

Stay well people, I have a feeling that we will all be seeing a lot less of each other for a while, I am certainly minimising my contact with the outside world from here on in, I am in the lucky position to be able to do that and I have plenty to occupy my time so it will pretty much be business as usual for me 😝
