Back to normal, stuff to sort & Winter flowering shrubs.

Monday 6th January 2020: I have enjoyed having John at home for three weeks but this morning I am also happy to have the place back to myself as he goes off to work early. I think it’s the sense of back to normality and there is definitely a lot to be said for doing things the way I want them done instead of compromise or argument ๐Ÿ˜œ

So what will I be doing with my time? Good question, I always say ‘I never make plans’ they go awry quite quickly I find so a loose idea of what I want to achieve with an indefinite time frame is a much better option lol, it also give me room to completely change my mind ๐Ÿ˜€ Today’s tasks are to get the morning rounds done, finish setting up the heat pad in the greenhouse now I have found everything I need, possibly move a bit more wood chip (nearly done) a few household tasks such as hoovering, dinner prep, lighting the Rayburn (they all take time) and probably a million other little things along the way. I have a couple of other jobs in mind that need doing such as cleaning out the quail and the ducks and they are the kind of job that are on the list but can be flexible as long as I get them done at some point within the next couple of days.

I did the animals, topping up the duck bedding as I went round, finding the rabbit/guineas some lovely greens and then figured I may as well strike while the iron is hot with a bit of outside work. I chose to do the rest of the wood chip laying in the fruit cage, the plan was to get the wood chip down, weed and mulch the pots of summer raspberries and cut back the autumn canes. I was about six barrowfuls in when I felt decidedly shaky, stupidly I had only eaten a banana for breakfast like I have been for the past couple of weeks but with some hard work on top the banana didn’t cut it ๐Ÿ˜œ I can only assume it’s blood sugar levels, I have had it before when I haven’t eaten enough to fuel the jobs I’m doing, I went in and had a large bowl of bran flakes, and a couple of shortbreads, 15 mins later I felt better but still a bit shaky so I made a coffee and sat down a while.

Once I had recovered I went back out and got the job in hand finished in the fruit cage, the areas that needed wood chip are all done, the summer raspberries have a mulch layer of wood chip on top of their pots, I have cut down the autumn raspberry canes and did a bit extra pruning of the blackcurrant bushes. I got half a trug of weeds out which will go to the rabbit/guineas for tomorrow’s snack. I secured the posts and canes and then shut the gate, that is all that will need doing in there now until well into spring except a bit of potash feeding for the strawberries to encourage flowering.

A midway through and finished picture of the fruit cage.

Indoors to light the Rayburn, John called in for a cuppa and I will have a quick sit down before a chap arrives mid afternoon to collect some hens.

Just as I am about to get back into working outside the weather is on the turn, the forecast over the next couple of days is for warm temps but accompanied by rain and possible high winds ๐Ÿ™„ urgh. Not to be deterred I have rainy day jobs in mind including getting the big poly tunnel up together and ready to plant into.

And right on cue just as I wrote this, it began to rain ๐Ÿ˜‚

Tuesday: I have enjoyed another great morning outside getting things done, I am really enjoying myself at the minute, the weather is fairly kind and I have the energy and strength, fabulous. First up as always was the morning rounds and this time while I was doing them I cleaned out the goose hut, I have to then close the door all day as the chickens would get in there and scratch it all out again ๐Ÿ™„ Then onto the garden or more precisely the big poly tunnel, I tidied it up a little, pruned the grapevine, tidied up the strawberries and topped up the compost they are growing in. I made sure everything else was tidied up and added extra compost, I have chard and flat leaf parsley growing nicely. The other things overwintering in there are the lemon grass and the Chinese gooseberries, I am hoping they come through the winter ok along with the basil and the lemon verbena. All look ok at the minute so fingers crossed. I cut up some old compost bags and used them for weed suppressant round the edges and then I topped up an empty raised bed and sowed some early carrot seeds. I have covered them with fleece and we will see if they germinate or not, nothing to lose as they are some seeds I found from last year so if they don’t grow it’s not a big loss. I sorted out the potato bags and I need to order some first earlies, I am going to grow these in the tunnel as well, I don’t normally do earlies but it’s good to change things about now and again.

Early in January it’s mostly about preparation for the months ahead, there is not much that can be sown until early next month. It’s a good month to get your crop rotation plan sorted and write down anything you would really like to grow. Sit with a cuppa and order your seeds, onion sets, garlic bulbs and seed potatoes. I have just ordered mine, the plants are despatched to you at the appropriate times for planting so you can’t go wrong really. I have also ordered some grafted plants, water melon and aubergine, two plants I find difficult to get going from seed as a general rule. Often with the amount I order I get a ‘deal’ of some kind, this time I have opted for 36 geranium plug plants for ยฃ2.99 I probably won’t keep them myself but what I will do is grow them on and put them out for sale for a couple of quid each depending on size, that way I will hopefully cover the costs of the veg I have bought. That’s what I always aim to do with the veg/fruit I sell at the gate, if I can cover the cost of the seeds, growing them and harvesting what we need then I am doing myself a favour plus providing some tasty home grown veg/fruit for customers, a win, win situation ๐Ÿ˜€

Indoors at lunchtime to grab a sandwich and get the Rayburn lit, decide what to have for dinner later and prep it.

Wednesday: The weather is holding beautifully which means after doing the animals I was able to get another morning out in the veg garden. I started off tidying the greenhouse a little bit, moving stuff around, sowing a few broad bean seeds then out onto the beds. I lay awake last night thinking about what beds I had done and what still needed to be tackled, a bit sad lol but at least I got up this morning knowing what I wanted to achieve. You may remember last year I tried the ‘chop and drop’ thing, well not this year, I didn’t really like the untidy look and more importantly it didn’t give a feeling of an end and a beginning if that makes sense, I also found that I felt I had a lack of control over the garden which persisted all season long. So this year I am clearing and tidying which is what I have been doing this morning, I am happy with what I have done and whilst doing it I am mentally making a note of what will go where which I felt unable to do last year. As it stands out there I just have two more areas to sort out, I do have to replenish the soil with homemade compost or manure but once everything is cleared I can get that done. Both the compost heap and the manure pile are very wet at the moment which in turn makes heavy work so I will wait a while and hope it continues to dry out some more. I still have a few bits of produce growing, the winter spinach and a few tiny cabbages that the birds have been at, I have now put protection over them so they can continue to grow. There is of course curly kale still in the ground and the sprouting broccoli which I am able to get a few bits off of. The babbington leeks are pushing up through, they are a perennial leek and at the moment I’m not quite sure how that works. With conventional leeks you plant one and pull it when it’s bigger the perennial leeks should keep produce off shoots I suppose but as yet that hasn’t happened. I pulled up some radish, I need to try and find out which variety these are as they are far better than the usual French types. They are white and grow to golf ball size, tasty and more importantly they don’t bolt and go woody, a winner as far as I am concerned and a definite to grow again. Oh and the rhubarb is beginning to grow ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

I have to order some more weed membrane to block out the light on the growing beds so that weeds don’t become a big problem. At the moment I am using black plastic which I reuse each year until it falls apart so although it’s not the option I would like it’s the one I take. The reason being that the thin fabric stuff gets absolutely ripped apart by the winds up here, the thicker stuff is very costly and I need quite a lot of it. I will keep searching, I may eventually find an alternative.

So scrap what I have just written, I am going to trial jute, it’s a natural fabric, it will have a limited life span but it’s better for the environment, hopefully it will do a similar job to the plastic in cutting out the light. I also am thinking I can use off cuts of it as strawberry mats or cut holes in it to plant into, watch this space and I will let you know how it performs ๐Ÿ˜€

Thursday: The weather is a bit more feisty today lol but despite having lots of rain overnight, this morning it is dry and windy. I had already decided not to work on the garden today there are other jobs that are calling. One of those was my jam jar cupboard, I have a cupboard dedicated to jam jars, bottles, Kilner jars and any other glass container that might come in handy, some have been bought, some given and some had goodies in them made by others so it’s quite a collection. Over time they just get washed and stuffed anywhere that is not in the way and that means that I don’t really know what is in there ๐Ÿ™„ so sorting and tidying the cupboard was a job that needed doing, I can also then see what if anything I need to get for the coming seasons. I made a coffee, went out there and got so engrossed in what I was doing I forgot the coffee and it went cold ๐Ÿ˜

That actually didn’t take as long as I thought it would and now I need to find some other jobs to get on with.

I’m not sure what triggered the next job but it took me a lot longer than I had thought ๐Ÿ™„ I think I started off by thinking I will tidy up the office, another area that just gets stuff dumped until you can hardly get in the door to find stuff. My aim was to get some of the things under the bed in the spare room but then I looked under the bed and pulled out stuff that was under there. Stuff that came from Johns Mums and to be honest I have no idea why we still have it, other stuff that we no longer use and have nowhere else for it to go, that all got sorted and out into piles, charity shop, free sites, selling sites. The space was then ready for the things like the travel cot which is stored in the office but can go under the bed. That then led me onto all the other stuff in the office lol, again things we no longer use or that are broken so more piles for recycling or selling on or putting on the free sites. I am not saying the office is now clutter free because there are still things in boxes to be gone through but I have made a dent in it.

Friday: Today has been an altogether different day, Josh arrived early morning to help with the morning rounds ๐Ÿ˜€ he was all kitted out in mud proof gear and keen as mustard to help me. We fed everything and let them out, collected a few eggs then took some hay to the horses. What made me laugh is that he is a little afraid of the chickens and ducks but no fear whatsoever of the horses. Once we had finished outside we came in for a juice break and chatted about the types of food he likes, then I asked ‘shall we make a cake’ ‘oooooo can we make pie’ he replied lol. I let him choose the fruit and he decided on apple, plum & blackcurrants ๐Ÿ™„ it actually tasted quite nice if a little sharp. He did a good job of rolling out the pastry and even made a pastry triceratops head to go with it ๐Ÿ˜‚ Mid morning, just before Shelley came to pick him up, Sam arrived with Mia and the twiglets, everybody (except the twiglets) had pie ๐Ÿฅง I looked after the twins and Mia while Sam went off to get some food shopping in peace and then it was time to do the afternoon feeding and egg collection. A lovely day.

When I walk down the driveway at this time of year I always stop when I am halfway back to smell the Winter honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima) that has been growing for a few years now. The amazing sweet scent of this otherwise unremarkable shrub is delicious and a real treat at this time of year. It goes by some other rather sweet names such as kiss-me-at-the-gate or sweet breath of spring ๐Ÿ˜€ I took a few sprigs indoors to put in a pot on the windowsill for a natural room scent and I also took a couple of cuttings, I’m not sure if they will take this time of year but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

At our old place I had a Daphne and really wish I had dug it up and bought it with us as you could smell its lovely scent long before you got anywhere near it. I think sweet smelling winter shrubs are under used probably because by the time people go to the garden centres en mass it’s late spring and they have passed their best and don’t look particularly engaging but they are definitely worth a thought if you are looking for something to fill a gap and the reward is uplifting in the depths of winter.

Saturday: ๐Ÿ˜€ yay the weekend, great because John does the rounds in the mornings giving me a break from it. I get on with other things and besides the household chores I spent a small amount of time in the garden. A quick job of tidying the bird, butterfly and beer bed, I call it this because it has a pear, apple, cherry and mulberry tree in it as well as Japanese honeysuckle, blackcurrant and gooseberry bushes which pretty much feed the birds and hopefully some butterflies, the beer comes in with the hop I have growing there though I have never used it for that purpose as yet lol. It was a quick visit outside because it’s a bit blowy and a tad cold so my fingers soon felt the nip in the air. I had intended laying the jute weed fabric but when it’s windy trying to do that by yourself is a tricky job and John has gone off to get feed.

When he gets back the jobs on the sheet are to brush the flue and clean out the Rayburn and then he is building a gate for a new fence in the orchard as the one I put up keeps falling down. I need to stop these demented hens in the front paddock from reaching my veg garden. At first just a couple made it there then a few and now about 15 of them, most of the wood chip I put down on the pathways has been scratched into piles or onto the lawn ๐Ÿ™„ I want to get well ahead with keeping them at bay so that gardening is an altogether pleasant affair this year instead of an angry one because they have scratched up all my hard work.

The gate didn’t get built but John re loaded the wood pile in the covered area just out the back then we actually had a few hours off before starting again with the afternoon rounds, Charlie and Macca walked over for a cuppa, we went and got a bit of food shopping and called in to see Shelley, Martin and the kids to deliver a tray of eggs. By 8.30 I was asleep on the sofa, feeling tired after a busy week ๐Ÿ’ค

Sunday: The weather was filthy overnight, lashing rain and strong winds but all is settled this morning. Again, John did the morning rounds while I had a shower and did the household chores. A quick coffee and John went out to power wash the POL pen now that we have moved our ex laying hens on to a new home. I don’t know what it is about that job but as soon as it needs doing he moves it directly to the top of the list ๐Ÿ™„ still once it’s done it can be left until we buy in the next batch of POL for selling probably in March.

The plan for the rest of the morning is to go out for breakfast at a local plant nursery, John gets a cooked brekkie and I get to look round at the plants it’s a win, win ๐Ÿ˜€

I bought an evergreen shrub at the nursery, only a small specimen, I can’t bear to part with the amount of money they want for things when I can grow it on lol. If I specifically wanted something for a certain space then I would but this will go in a pot for now and be put out the front, I’m trying to get a bit of colour out there as it’s all very dead and brown looking. On the way back we called into my Sisters for a cup of tea, one cup lead to another cup and before we knew it we’d been there a couple of hours ๐Ÿ˜œ We booked a trip to the theatre while we were there, some sort of interactive ghost show ๐Ÿ‘ป it is billed as ‘not for those of a nervous disposition’ ๐Ÿ˜ it will get the adrenaline pumping and blow away the cobwebs lol.

We got back, I lit the Rayburn, I had to pop along the road to get some natural fire lighters as we only had one left. These are rolled up wood shavings and I think they have a extremely thin layer of wax on them, I was finding it more difficult to get hold of newspapers as we don’t ever have them and so these are a great alternative, they also light first time and are very easy to use. Meanwhile John went and finished cleaning the POL pen then he fed the birds and collected the eggs then he finally got on to making the gate and I got tonight’s dinner sorted which is shepherds pie.

The long range weather forecast shows no freezing temperatures in sight so looks like we are going to have a mild winter (famous last words) I must admit that although we always think we need a bit of freezing weather to break dormancy and kill off any pests, I am rather enjoying a milder season. Though it does means I am really wanting to get my teeth sunk into some sowing, I’m like a race horse that is being held back at the minute ๐ŸŽ I have learnt from many years experience not to be too hasty in that department though as it can all go horribly wrong ๐Ÿคช

Whatever you are doing this week have a good one, do something outside your comfort zone if you can, as I say to Josh ‘put your brave hat on and go for it’ TTFN ๐Ÿ‘‹

A happy and healthy 2020 ๐Ÿฅณ to you all.

New Year’s Day: We have had a lovely Christmas and are looking forward to the New Year. In between the two we have had Johns Mums funeral, an occasion which is always bitter sweet I think, on the one hand you are saying goodbye to someone you will never see again and on the other hand you meet up with relatives you probably haven’t seen for a while, there you have it, the good and the bad all in one hit lol.

The farm has mostly just tickled along, feeding, watering, egg collecting, cleaning out, the occasional mention of what needs doing over the next few months. Planning is just about all that can be done for the garden at the moment, I did go into the greenhouse and dig out the heat pad I bought back in summer. I need to get it set up and then decide what I shall grow on top of it, mostly peppers, chilli and aubergine as they need a long growing season and so the sooner I can get them started the more chance they will produce something at the end of the year.

I am always chomping at the bit at this time of year, raring to get going with seeds and normally I would have to hold off for quite a while but this year with the new greenhouse AND a heat mat I shall be out of the starting blocks early ๐Ÿ˜€ There are plenty of things to be done in preparation outside, I still have some clearing to do and some wood chip to put down (nearly done ๐Ÿ˜) and maybe some changing around, I will see what I am capable of as I go.

John is busy finishing off the boot room floor today and at the end of the week Martin is coming to build a cupboard and a seat/storage in there, happy days, I will be getting much more organised which can only be a good thing ๐Ÿ˜€

I don’t make New Year resolutions, best not to set yourself up for a fall I reckon ๐Ÿ˜œ I just make a mental note of what needs changing (and then I usually forget all about it ๐Ÿคฃ) Must try harder, where have I read that before ๐Ÿ™„ I do think it’s good to set yourself a challenge though, not dry January as we don’t don’t drink enough to warrant giving it up, and that is not denial it’s a fact lol. We probably have around 6 units a month and most months not even that. I object to being told which day to go meat free so we won’t be doing meat free Mondays, I prefer to choose the day we have eggs on toast for dinner ๐Ÿ˜‚ All that leads me to the 2020 challenge of not buying anything new ๐Ÿ˜ฎ yeah, I’m contemplating it and then the first thing I think is what about the sofas ๐Ÿ˜‚ I think I will challenge myself to get what I am comfortable with second hand such as egg cups (we only have one left) and try really hard at limiting everything else. Hmmm now I have said it out loud I’m not sure how this will pan out ๐Ÿ™„

Thursday 2nd Jan: The weather, yes you knew I would get back to it soon lol, the weather, after that horrible wet period which seemed to go on forever, has settled into some unseasonable stability. It’s mild, disconcertingly mild for mid Winter I have to say, but never one to look a gift horse in the mouth I have been outside this morning moving wood chip (nearly done ๐Ÿ˜) The fist thing I notice is how unfit I have got from not doing outside work for a while, I managed a measly 5 barrows today and then I was aching and puffed, not good. I need to do something every day to build back up to the amount of barrels I shifted a couple of months back.

Meanwhile John is in the boot room putting the units back together, I say units they are not ready made ones just ply that make up sides and shelves plus a worktop. Obviously as the floor was lifted (to get over the soil pipe) everything else had to be lifted as well and then the sink and washing machine needed plumbing back in.

Martin, who is a carpenter, is coming tomorrow to build this cupboard which will store all the chutneys, jams, homemade liqueurs and a whole host of other stuff. Normally John would have built one but, truth be told, carpentry is not one of his strong skills, he manages with DIY carpentry but I want something robust, he is better off sticking to the plumbing, which he is excellent at ๐Ÿ˜€

I had to make a small sign to go in the grass under the apple tree at the front. Last year we planted crocus bulbs there and people tend to walk over the grass to the fence to look at the chickens etc, we love that they do that but didn’t think about the poor bulbs that are trying to push their way up this spring, so hopefully a polite notice will keep them off that particular area.

Friday: Just when I talked about how stable the weather was, it changed, last night and early this morning lashings of rain, a cold wind and a definite dip in temperature although still not that low. We got the morning jobs all sorted and waited for Martin to arrive laden with materials to build this storage. I cannot tell you how excited I am to see it getting built, I’m cock-a-hoop about the amount of storage space it has given me. I am definitely going to do much more this year in terms of dried herbs, beans etc plus much more jam and preserves ๐Ÿ˜€

Once the cupboard was finished I started filling it up, it not only stores what was in the old corner cupboard but I am able to get things out of the kitchen cupboards that have been stored there because there was nowhere else for them, freeing up other space and making life a lot easier in terms of finding stuff. There are bits that you end up with that you don’t really know what to do with but don’t want to throw them away in case they come in useful and I will also now be able to bulk buy should I want to as I never had the space before. Oh the possibilities are endless ๐Ÿ˜œ

I also now have a storage box for hats and gloves etc with a lid at the height that the children (and me if necessary) can be sat to put their wellies on and off which will make life easier too, the option before was to sit on the mucky floor or trapse dirty boots into the kitchen.

While that was going on, John cleaned out all the chicken coops and I cleaned various areas indoors. I also started a to do list for the garden side of things and then a list for the farm side of things so that we both know what needs doing and besides a list is a great way to see what has been achieved ๐Ÿ˜€

Saturday: Martin came to finish off a few bits, a door on the cupboard that John built under the sink, a shelf over the top of the coat hooks and altered the door between the boot room and kitchen. I was going to have a new door but in the spirit of up-cycling or reusing and making an effort not to buy what we don’t need, we decided to put a wood panel over the bottom half of the door which was glass all the way down, a bit of primer and paint and it will definitely ‘do’.

I am not sure about you but January tends to be a time when I like to go through stuff and have a good old clear out, broken things, junk bits, things I no longer need all get sorted and dealt with appropriately. That’s what I spent most of the morning doing while John did a similar thing outside plus burning odds and ends of wood and paper feed sacks. At lunchtime Shelley came over with Florence and we went to Witney for a coffee and a mooch round. I confess I did buy some new shoes, waterproof pumps actually and a jumper in the sale, the next job is to go through my wardrobe and sort out stuff for the charity shop or rag bin. I don’t really buy many clothes at all and they are usually for working in ๐Ÿ˜‚ but I had a favourite old jumper that is really only good for work now and I wanted to replace it with one for ‘best’ lol.

In the evening we went to a BBQ, yep you read that correctly ๐Ÿ˜œ an annual event by a couple in the village and it’s more fun than you would imagine in January, food cooked outdoors tastes even better when the temperature is low in my opinion.

Sunday: John did the morning rounds, that will be his last day until next weekend, tomorrow it will be my job from morning till night again ๐Ÿ™„ Meanwhile I got sorted indoors and also put a coat of paint on the door. Then we had Mia and the twins for a few hours, when they got back Sam and Luke had dinner with us and that was pretty much the day filled up.

I took a photo of some bulbs coming up, it’s great to see the wheel of the year rolling on towards Spring ๐Ÿ˜€

Christmas cake & stir up Sunday

Monday 18th November: The weekend passes so quickly doesn’t it ๐Ÿ™„ Back round to Monday and it’s a sunny morning, not too cold and not raining so that’s a pretty good winters day ๐Ÿ˜€ I did the morning rounds, we still haven’t moved the geese but I have opened up the paddock gate for them to wander round the place and hopefully I can herd them into the front paddock later today. Geese are great for keeping your grass under control as long as it’s not too long in the first place and although the front paddock got long it is now dying back so they should be able to get some good grazing in there for a couple of months.

I have a choice of tasks I can tackle today and as yet I haven’t decided which ones I will do, coffee first, decisions after ๐Ÿ˜€

Coffee drunk, decision made and I got on with cleaning the bathroom, the kitchen, stripping the sofa covers to wash and making a fish pie ๐Ÿ˜€ not very interesting things but very necessary ones ๐Ÿ˜œ I was putting my preserve pan back in the top cupboard as I don’t think I will need that any more this year and knocked an empty bottle out which smashed on the floor and covered every square inch of the kitchen floor or so it seemed, took me ages to make sure I had collected all the bigger bits and hoovered up the tiny bits.

Sam, Shelley and the kiddies came over in the afternoon.

John has been coming home in time to put the animals away since the clocks changed but tonight I was on my own, it wasn’t too bad, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get the front lot of hens in by myself as they for some strange reason won’t go to bed even when it’s dark so they have to be cajoled in but I did manage it ๐Ÿ˜€

Tuesday: I had a bit of a bonus this morning in that the Rayburn was still showing embers in the bottom so before I even got dressed I got it going again, just as well because it was very cold outside๐Ÿ™„ I did the morning rounds breaking ice in the water buckets as I went round teas that cold overnight.

Once that was all done and I was back inside I sorted out dinner for later and then I got some bread on the go. I haven’t made any for ages as I just didn’t have time but over winter there is more time to do those kind of things so I also gathered together all the dried fruit for the Christmas cake, weighed it out and it is now soaking nicely in some pear liqueur and orange juice ready for making tomorrow morning. This year I have been able to use home produce sultanas and I was thinking that if I could get all things aligned I could actually use home grown apricots, cherries, sultanas, lemons, possibly figs and nuts in the cake, wouldn’t that be something ๐Ÿ˜€

I had a quick visit from two of Johns uncles who had come over this way to visit Johns Mum.

I left the afternoon rounds as late as possible because I have to feed and collect the eggs then go round and put everything to bed so it makes sense to only have to put coat and boots on once. The front chickens were a pain in the proverbial as usual and one is still out but I chased it round long enough so I will see if John can get it when he comes home as I have dinner to sort out. I did manage to manoeuvre the geese down to the front paddock and they are back in their old lodgings tonight, that great because there is plenty of grass out there for them to nibble on ๐Ÿ˜€

I don’t think it’s going to be quite as cold tonight as last night and I was sweating after coming in from outside lol.

I washed the sofa covers and more holes have appeared ๐Ÿ˜‚ I really need to sort out new ones I think but I can’t quite commit ๐Ÿ˜œ

Benny has been earning his keep every other day I see him with a mouse or something similar, I am glad we went for farm bred kittens who learnt the trade from their Mum, just a shame about the disappearance of TC ๐Ÿ˜”

Wednesday: A milder day today and the sun is out although my feet got cold towards the middle of the morning.

First off before going out I got the Christmas cake mixed and I to the oven as it was going to take 4 1/2 hours to cook! Then out to do the morning rounds cleaning out the ducks while I was at it. Then Mum came over and she has planted the tulips ๐ŸŒท๐Ÿ˜€ I dug up the dahlias and washed off the tubers and did a bit of division with them. Then onto the freesias, I dug half of them up ready to store and I will leave the other half in the ground to see how they do through the winter, hopefully they will survive and I can do that every year instead of lifting them. This is about the point my feet got cold so it was time to come in and make coffee, we had a bit of pumpkin cake that I got out of the freezer yesterday and I lit the fire. Sam arrived with the twins as I am having them while she goes for some physio, the cake was finally done about 5 hours in ๐Ÿ˜ฌ It’s a few years since I have made one as normally there is so much food the cake is hanging around for weeks but this year it really will be a treat having not had cake available on a regular basis.

I won a bookcase on eBay, I’m delighted as my other one has run out of room for books ๐Ÿ˜‚ I know it’s the digital age but there is something about picking up a book to read that I’m not ready to let go of just yet ๐Ÿ˜€

Thursday: Not a bad morning weather wise, I did the rounds and it is quite dry underfoot although we are forecast rain this evening so that will bugger it all up again ๐Ÿ˜ As well as feeding and letting out I moved the Light Sussex hens to a pen and had to chose a cockerel from the five we have left. I will be using them as a breeding group and the choice was difficult. I spent a good five minutes looking at them, should I go for size and as they will be for the table that might seem like the obvious option but they will produce more eggs than I need so in the end I went for feathering which means I should end up with good standards and can sell the surplus eggs for hatching which will fetch a good price. Jobs done outside I came in to sort the eggs, we have lots at the moment and not many customers at the farm gate, I say not many we are still turning over dozens of eggs but eventually the surplus catches up and I have a few trays to shift. The duck eggs are going rather better than I ever expected, sometimes we even sell trays of those which is unusual.

Occasionally I have random thoughts and today’s was ‘what is the definition of farming exactly’ I always assume, probably along with most people that farming, especially in this country, takes place on a fairly large scale so I wouldn’t call myself a farmer however the definition is ‘Farming is the act or process of working the ground, planting seeds, and growing edible plants. You can also describe raising animals for milk or meat as farming‘ so it seems that I am after all a farmer ๐Ÿ˜€ I would also take to task anyone who labelled smallholders as ‘hobby farmers’ as a hobby by definition is something you do for leisure in your spare time ๐Ÿ˜œ

I took all the books off of the bookcase in preparation for the new one and so get what happens next? Yep I spend ages looking through books I haven’t picked up for a while lol. I did sort them out and put a few smallholding/countryside books up for sale, ones I no longer need or use. The range of books goes from smallholding topics to gardening techniques and then publications on local history in one form or another to British countryside, then there are the children’s books that I have never god rid of so poetry and story books and finally novels that I have read or need to read. Another pile of novels will go to a friend who sells them for charity and now I have my eye on sorting out the cook books on the kitchen bookshelf ๐Ÿ˜œ

I did feel inspired by looking through one book and so I did some apple slices to dry in the oven for storing, great snack for the grandchildren or for use on breakfast porridge I reckon.

Around midday when I had slowed down from busying I suddenly felt cold and thought I’d better light the fire, I’m not sure if the temperature dropped or if was already that cold but I hadn’t noticed.

Very pleased with how the bookshelf project turned out and it was a bargain for solid oak, love a bit of second hand shopping.

Friday: Early start for early bloods this morning so I cracked on and got everything done by the time I needed to leave for the doctors surgery. When I got back I lit the Rayburn and decided that I was going to have an easy day today, I feel like I have a cold coming but not sure if it is a cold coming or if it’s the Lupus so I figured a rest day was probably the best thing.

Saturday: Feeling tired ๐Ÿ˜‘ Did the morning rounds, I was hoping that John would be able to do them but he has to get materials for next weeks job apparently, not happy ๐Ÿ˜• I do everything by myself from morning till night and look forward to the weekend when I get a bit of help, still the same amount of work but it’s easier with two and besides that it’s someone to talk to as well, makes things more pleasurable. Tired and grumpy do not bode well for the day today ๐Ÿ˜ณ

To be fair John didn’t take too long and got dog/cat food and delivered some eggs on the way and I soon got out of my sulk ๐Ÿ˜œ (at least I’m honest) and we got on with a few jobs. John cleaned out the hens in the front and the ones at the side while I did the ones in the POL pen and the stable ones, we altered one of the stable doors so that I can open it with ducking (and usually banging my head) then we went to get a bit of food shopping and called in to see Mum and Ken for a cup of tea and a slice of cake ๐Ÿ˜‹ Once back home it was time to feed the birds, collect the eggs, light the Rayburn, put the shopping away and organise dinner for tonight all before it gets dark at 4.30 ๐Ÿ˜• then it’s time to go out and shut everything away and that’s the day done outside.

Sunday: It rained a bit in the night but not raining come morning however it is one of those dank dreary days.

John did the animals this morning while I did some indoor bits and then he went to visit his Mum, when he came back he went out with the tractor to move the chicken hut onto some better grass, it have become a mud bath. Meanwhile I lit the Rayburn and as it is stir up Sunday I found all the ingredients to put together and make a Christmas pudding. This is a light version (Jamie Oliver) as it does not have any added sugar it just relies on the dried fruit to sweeten it, find a recipe and use any combination of dried fruit that you like as long as it adds up to the same amount needed. I like to use dates and cherries for a bit of opulence but any dried fruit will work, the same goes for nuts, if you don’t like almonds or walnuts then use nuts that you do like. I like to add freshly squeezed orange juice and some Christmas spices such as nutmeg which makes it smell amazing ๐Ÿ˜€ Hopefully the grandchildren will be around sometime today and they can stir the pudding mix and make a wish before it gets steamed and then stored. My children are very used to stirring the pudding mixture it’s been a long-standing tradition in our house. The hardest part of making a pudding is the amount of time it takes to steam it and then people think you need to steam it again on Christmas Day, you can if you want to be purist but you can also heat it much quicker in the microwave ๐Ÿ˜‰

The pudding is currently steaming on the hob with a couple more hours to go๐Ÿ™„

Rain, snow & sunshine all in the same week๐Ÿ™„

Monday 11th Nov: On the 11th hour of the 11th Day in the 11th month We will remember them.

It’s another cold November day, it rained heavily overnight again but this morning the ‘lake’ has shrunk, it disappears quickly it’s just a case of too much volume too fast and it collects at a low point of which our paddock happens to be a part.

I am having a coffee before I venture out this morning ๐Ÿ˜€

Did the rounds, checked on the ‘spring’ and even though the water has receded from there it’s still bubbling up? Took the rabbit/guineas a big bag of hay to make nests in or eat, then the egg shed needed a bit of attention. I found water sitting in one of the boxes of duck eggs this morning, where the rain has blown in I presume, so found a piece of Perspex to line to back wall with and hopefully that should stop it. The duck eggs are useless for sale now so they will have to go to the dogs for their breakfast.

I had decided while I was out that some pancakes would be a good idea for breakfast when I got in, I was so busy with an online discussion while I was making them that I forgot the flour ๐Ÿคช so in effect they were sweet omelettes lol still tasted ok though with a mug of coffee ๐Ÿ˜€

The sun is out but it’s cold, the crazy thing is that while it’s cold and flooding here, in Australia where my brother and his family are, there are bush fires all around, there are wild fires in California, there are storms wreaking havoc in Europe and plummeting Siberian temperatures reaching further than ever before, one thing is for sure were are in a climate emergency, wether its man made or not it’s very real ๐Ÿ™„

I did some hoovering and polishing then lit the Rayburn, then gathered together a load of vegetables from the freezer to make a pan of soup, might as well make good use of the heat. Most things in there, potatoes, leeks, broad beans, turnip, carrots, cauli, are from the garden, just some celery & garlic that isn’t. Veg soup is a very good way to get some of your 5 a day in you though I do wonder how much goodness is really left after cooking, still something is better than nothing ๐Ÿ™„

I observed the silence at 11am, I’m not sure if it was 1 minute or 2 these days but even though I am here by myself and it’s silent anyway, I stood still and quiet to reflect and remember those who have given their lives so that we can live ours, not forgetting of course all the animals that also perished for different reasons during the world wars especially.

Another text from the Doctor telling me that my white cell count has still not gone up enough ๐Ÿ™„ this is a bit of a worry to be honest, I have had it before but it usually comes back up pretty quickly but not this time ๐Ÿค” It means I am more prone than most to infections and that the symptoms of infection may not show up ๐Ÿ˜ I have the consultant on Wednesday so I will have to wait and see what he has to say about it all.

Putting the animals away tonight I went up to the back paddock to do the geese and noticed Biscuit just stood in the middle of the big paddock and I couldn’t see Jack anywhere. I shut the geese and hens away and she was still stood there so I wondered if she was ok as Jack was not there and it’s unusual for them to be very far apart from each other. I went into the field and most of the way down, I walked into the field adjacent which is also open to the horses and looked in the field shelter for Jack, nothing, at this point I’m thinking we have lost a horse ๐Ÿค” I walk over to Biscuit to see if she is ok and Jack moves out from the shadow of the hedgeline I feel I must explain that at twilight it’s very difficult to spot a bay horse lurking in the shadows ๐Ÿ˜‚

I had a massage tonight, amazing as always, sometimes I have Bowen therapy and sometimes a massage depending on how things are going and as I have no aches or pains at the minutes a lovely warm, soothing massage was just the ticket. I love a bit of alternative therapy and if a monthly massage was given on the NHS I reckon there would be a lot more people in a healthier state of mind and body ๐Ÿ˜€

Tuesday: My first thought when typing this was, is it only Tuesday’ lol seems as though it should be later.

The sun was shinning this morning and I set to doing a few extras after the feeding rounds, clean straw for the geese and for the ducks, then move the quail to a cage that is in the back area as they seem to be unhappy at the moment. The cage is smaller but it’s in out of the wind, a little warmer and I have plugged a heat lamp in for them just to see if that helps. They have stopped laying altogether and maybe a change of address will help get them laying again. Then I made coffee and went into the greenhouse to have a bit of a tidy up and sort out, some of the plants in there can go out for the winter but I was just giving them a bit of a head start first. I do have some plants left in there that I am trying to nurture, peppers, tomato, ginger, to see if they will make it through the cold and into Spring.

Back indoors to light the Rayburn, just as the weather did a complete turnabout, rain and wind turned the day very wintery but it only lasted for half an hour or more, weird.

I got the slow cooker going this morning with braised beef and vegetables in there so I don’t need to think about dinner until much later today, although it’s the kind of day I rather fancy a pudding so I might make a quick jam sponge later ๐Ÿ˜€

Sam thinks it might be a good idea to bring the horses into the stable for a day and a night and I’m inclined to agree, just to get their feet off the wet ground for a while. They are not standing in the water but the ground is constantly wet at the moment, they won’t like it much but it’s for their own good lol. My outlook on animals is to let them be just that, animals, don’t project human feelings and wants/needs onto them, I don’t feel it’s right but that’s just my opinion obviously. Our horses live out in all but the worst of weather and they are just fine, they grow a nice woolley coat to deal with the cold, they have access to shelter to get out of the wind and the rain should they choose to and they have space to wander so they can keep warm and supple. We have just had bonfire night (which goes on for days) and we don’t bring them in they stay out in the paddocks, they are fine, horses are flight animals and I feel confining them in a stable while fireworks are going off makes them more nervous than leaving them out. When they are out they can see and hear what is happening and deal with it in a matter of fact way. The same applies to our dogs, over the years we have had six dogs and only one was afraid of fireworks, (he came from a rescue centre so I had no idea of what he might have been subjected to in that dept so it’s understandable) but all the others have been well adjusted and are not bothered by the noise, they also don’t live indoors mind you so they don’t have access to a sofa or god forbid the humans bed ๐Ÿ˜they have all had and do have access to a warm dry area to sleep but it’s definitely a dog area not human ๐Ÿ™„

At approx 6.30 we had a power cut ๐Ÿ™„ it’s not unusual in fact I have said that living here I have never known so many power cuts since the 1970’s miner strikes! John was in the bath when the lights went out so that leaves me to determine wether it’s our power or a bigger problem, the torch is in the fuse board cupboard so I quickly find out that there is no power coming in meaning it’s the electric board at fault somewhere. Next move is to find the telephone number to report or find out about a fault, John shouts from the bathroom ‘can you bring me the torch’ ‘are you getting out’ no but I can’t see’ then no pal, I can not, I need it to move around the pitch black house and find the number in the office, you just lay there in the bath and relax…in the dark ๐Ÿ˜ I call the number and a recorded message tells me we have no power in our area (yeah I knew that) and hopefully it would be back on by 9.40 but may be later! As it was it was back on less than ten minutes later ๐Ÿ˜€

Wednesday: Slightly different morning this morning, for starters Johns first job was cancelled due to the wrong parts being delivered which meant he was here to help and that gets the jobs done twice as fast ๐Ÿ˜€ Secondly I have a hospital app at 3.50 in Oxford today ๐Ÿ˜ that is a difficult time due to a number of factors, the school run and although we don’t have to do it there will be plenty of cars on the road that do. It will also mean that we are either still in Oxford or trying to get back when it gets dark so we are not here to shut the animals away, the Fox only needs one opportunity and it will wipe you out. It’s not possible to ask the girls to do it as it’s right at the time when the kiddies will all want their dinner and so for today the birds will remain shut in, all except the ducks in the pen and the geese because they will be easy to round up before we go. The ducks and hens in the stable, the side paddock, the front paddock and the turkeys will remain safely shut in as they would be impossible to round up while it’s still light. All have feed and water inside and it will be a minor inconvenience for them for one day and peace of mind for us.

After doing the morning rounds John got on with bringing in some wood loads, we are going through it more rapidly now, and I cleaned the flues and the ash pan and hoovered the kitchen and the boot room, put some washing on etc. John went off to the bank and to pick up some sawdust and rabbit feed and I looked at the clock to see how much time I had to do things, it was only 9 o’clock lol, I thought it was later than that!

Woody the woodpecker has been very active here the last few days, as with Cyril the squirrel I always say good morning but unlike Cyril who stands stock still when he hears my voice, woody just carries on climbing up the oak tree. I started feeding the garden birds again at the first sign of frost so a week or so now, I don’t feed them all summer as there are plenty of pests for them to feast on in and around the farm especially the veg patch but as it gets colder I want to encourage them to hang around so feeding them is a good way. They are still loving the dead hedges, I can’t believe that something so simple can attract so many birds, it’s wonderful and I will definitely have more of these when we have the next apple tree pruned.

I have lit the Rayburn early, again because we won’t be here from about 2.30 I need to get the place warmed up as we won’t be able to keep it going when we are not here it will probably go out. Ideally the Rayburn should run 24/7 but John has insulated this place so well that if we did that we would be living in a permanent sauna, I’m not complaining about the insulation we need it but it means that we can’t run the Rayburn as it should be really. You can run it on coal but we have free wood so there is not much point besides when they say multi fuel it doesn’t mean you can run it on wood and coal at the same time, it has interchangeable plates for different types of fuel so we stick to wood and that is a bigger commitment daily lol.

I still haven’t planted the tulip bulbs and there is a good reason for that, I have been trying to do a bit of research on tulips. Most modern advice is that they are treated as annuals so the whole tulip is harvested along with the bulb and the bulb then discarded ๐Ÿ™„ Well I understand this because if you take the flower and the leaves there is nothing to feed the tulip bulb so that it can restore energy BUT there must be another way which is what I have been trying to find out. It seems that tulips only do well in their first year after that they are not so good even if they don’t get picked and are left in situ, I can’t quite get my head around that because how then would they multiply/naturalise and if they didn’t then we wouldn’t have any? My thinking is that this is a modern answer to solving a problem in the flower industry, but it’s not a very sustainable one so more reading up is needed to find the answer which must be out there somewhere hidden in the archives of time. Maybe it’s just modern types and I suspect old types are better at producing each year though probably not as striking.

The traffic was epic in and around Oxford I’m glad we don’t have to do that very often ๐Ÿ˜œ Just when I thought I understood this disease of mine I’m thrown again lol, I thought that logically the meds I am on to suppress the immune system had been too high a dose which is why the white cells dropped but no it seems that the Lupus can do that all by itself ๐Ÿค” regardless of the meds, so at the moment I am no further forward as more blood tests at the hospital should reveal wether it’s the meds or the Lupus that is causing the drop. The consultant thinks its the Lupus as normally coming off the meds would rectify the blood count, it’s a waiting game now for the results and the action they want to take, meanwhile I feel pretty good, no aches and pains, no tiredness to speak of just more than normal hair loss๐Ÿ™„

Thursday: Oh my word what can I say about this morning ๐Ÿค” It rained heavily last night and we are predicted rain all day today but when we woke up and looked out we had snow! Yes snow lol, not a massive amount but a layering although it quickly began to rain again so then we had slush. I got sorted and went out, it wasn’t as cold as I thought it would be but I had dressed appropriately and felt toasty. I fed and let almost everything out, not the turkeys as I have a feeling today will be troublesome enough without having to get them in from the driveway every couple of hours so they can stay put, they have a big run and plenty of room. The next job on the agenda was to get two stables ready for bringing in the horses just to give them a bit of relief from the rain and constant wet underfoot. After that it was to try and address some areas that are holding water, I honestly haven’t seen it this bad for about 7 years, the hay barn floor is flooded that’s the second time in a week, luckily everything is up off the floor on pallets and we concreted the feed room floor way back after the last serious flood issues. I say serious flood of course it’s not affecting the house (yet) and it shouldn’t because we are on higher ground however the paddock next door is slightly higher than us and as a result it runs off of there onto us and then continues down the slope to the lowest point. But it does affect the barn and the stables because where the floor gets worn over time dips are created and the water finds its natural course and gets in there. The lake and the river are back again and I spent a while digging small ditches to get water that was sitting to run downwards, behind the stable block we have a 5000ltre water tank which is full to capacity and overflowing causing problems in one of the stables so I have opened up the tap to let it all go and dig out small trenches towards the duck pen where it will collect in the pond before overflowing and carrying on down to the river/lake. As long as I can get the water to move downhill we should be fine and it’s only spitting at the minute if we have a deluge I’m not sure any of the measures will cope at all ๐Ÿ˜ We do have some small issues each year but this is definitely the worst for many years and winter has only just begun that the worrying bit ๐Ÿ˜”

I couldn’t get the Rayburn lit, typical when you want it to dry out your coat and gloves, so I abandoned that and made some pancakes to go with my coffee instead ๐Ÿ˜€ Typically John is working pretty far away today so if we have any disasters I’m on my own, normally he would be in the next town or village so I can call him if needed and he can arrive quickly but not today ๐Ÿคž

I gave Mia the dog a haircut this morning as she has ‘mud locks’ a bit like dreadlocks only much muckier ๐Ÿ˜œ she is fairly low to the ground and long haired so gets messy in weather like this.

Sam came over with the twins and got the horses in for a bit of respite care ๐Ÿ˜€ Luckily the forecast rain has not materialised giving us and everyone else a bit of a break from all the water standing. The rest of the days jobs passed without incident thankfully.

Friday: Forgot to jot anything down and no idea what I did apart from the usual and then going with Sam, Shelley and the kiddies to soft play for a couple of hours ๐Ÿ˜€

Saturday: Just sat down it’s 5.30 pm oh my days what a day of hard graft we have had but also a very positive one getting jobs done that have needed doing for a while. We started off with the normal rounds and then gathered up the ex laying ladies from the stable and put them in the point of lay pen. The reason being that we are selling off any birds that are no longer out with the laying flocks both chicken and duck. Normally they just retire and are free to wander around but it doesn’t really make much sense feeding and housing them over winter, it’s just more work than necessary, so I put them up for sale. We had a pretty quick response and managed to move 10 hens and 5 ducks on before lunchtime so that was great. We moved one of the Campbell drakes in with the laying ducks in the vain hope some may produce a batch of ducklings next year ๐Ÿ™„ We have fixed the rabbit run roof which had a hole in it and the rain gets in, the run is pretty big mind you and it was only wet at the door end but even so it needed doing. John cleaned out the hens in the front and I cleaned out the turkey run. We moved the water tank from the back of the stable block, this holds around 5000ltrs which I had to empty out the day before in order for us to move it to inside the duck pen. This was no mean feat, it’s not particularly heavy but it is large, round and awkward ๐Ÿ˜œ plus it wouldn’t go past the fir tree trunks so we had to man handle it up a slope (the ladder) and get it over the five foot fence into the duck run and then get it into situ on the other side so that John could reconnect the pipe work to the guttering that feeds it. After all this we had a sit down for about half an hour before I lit the Rayburn, fed the birds and collected the eggs. Meanwhile John got the tractor out and he turned the compost heap, I was convinced this was where any rats would be living but not one appeared so they must be elsewhere though I’m stumped as to where. The compost heap is an amazing little miracle of mother nature’s, you put all your prunings, old plants, clippings in there and voila it turns back into some wonderful soil that goes back onto the garden in Spring, we found a few potatoes in there which is always a Brucey Bonus ๐Ÿ˜€ A friend turned up with some pumpkins for the birds, they are from a local farm and so still whole which will be great for the hens as the seeds are supposed to be good for worming and in return he had some duck eggs, love a bit of bartering ๐Ÿ˜€ We had planned to move the geese back to the front paddock as they have now eaten the small back paddock down and I want them out before the daffodils begin to come up as their big feet will flatten them, but by the time we had finished chatting it was dark and they had put themselves to bed, this never happens ๐Ÿ˜‚ so we will move them tomorrow instead.

Our egg sales are down this week, I’m guessing because the road was flooded and the rain was relentless, typically the egg numbers have begun to go up. It’s never a balanced thing with the eggs, in summer sales are brisk in winter no so much but still good normally so where is everyone ๐Ÿ™„ Where are those customers that audibly tut or huff when you have sold out (most don’t, just a few) and I still smile pleasantly and apologise ๐Ÿ˜œ

I have to say that the weather today was glorious for a winters day, sunny, not windy and no rain, not even cold really, it was a pleasure to be out there and those are the days I feel a very lucky person indeed.

I know I should have put something in the slow cooker first thing but I had a hankering for some good old fish and chips tonight so that’s what we are having ๐Ÿ˜€

We finished our fish and chips and I thought that was it, cosy down for the evening until John went to lock up his van and couldn’t find his keys ๐Ÿ™„ It’s ok he says I have a spare set never been used, they don’t work ๐Ÿ™„ We go through the day to figure out when he last had them and then he goes out in the dark with a torch to try and find them. I went out the back and thought ooo it’s a bit cold I will stay in here in case they suddenly present themselves ๐Ÿ˜‚ Eventually I decided I ought to go and help as he still hasn’t found them, two sets of eyes are better than one especially when one set belongs to a bloke ๐Ÿคช No offence but in our family we call it a ‘man scan’ you know, when you ask them to get something out of the cupboard and apparently it isn’t there and you go and look and it’s right in front of his eyes ๐Ÿค” I go round to all the places he has been today, the hay barn, the rabbit run, the back area, the van, I find them on floor next to the van ๐Ÿ˜ฌ I am always telling him not to just chuck stuff down on the floor perhaps he will listen from now on ๐Ÿ˜

Sunday: I had planned on having an easier day today with a good few hours of doing not a lot BUT it hasn’t turned out that way lol. We were woken by Johns phone ringing and someone having water all over their bathroom floor, turns out they had had some heating work done the day before and it had disturbed the flush pipe on the toilet which is why water was all over the floor! So that left me doing the rounds this morning on me tod. Then we had the barefoot trimmer arriving to do the horses feet, that was a bit of a last minute thing as we couldn’t get hold of the usual farrier and their hooves were getting longer than is acceptable๐Ÿ™„ Meanwhile John had tried to start the tractor to finish the last bit of the compost heap but the battery was dead so he went off to visit his Mum, when he got back the battery still wasn’t ready so we popped out to get some bits of shopping, including ingredients for stir up Sunday next week. We get back I unload the shopping and get the Rayburn lit while John manages to get the tractor started and finish that job off. It will then be time for a bit of dinner, then do the feeding and egg collection, round to a relative for some birthday cake back to put the animals all to bed then we are out on a rare evening to the Theatre in Oxford, no rest for the wicked and we certainly must be pretty wicked ๐Ÿ˜œ

I still haven’t got round to planting the tulips and haven’t moved any wood chip (nearly done) ๐Ÿ™„ I am also a bit tired and can’t see a gap for a power nap, I sure hope the I don’t fall asleep during tonight’s show lol.

Dawn Pearse over and out for this week ๐Ÿ˜€ have a good one ๐Ÿ˜˜

Sausages but no stars, pumpkin bread & Autumn gardening jobs.

Monday 28th October: It’s 1.30pm and I have had a cracking few hours outside, I went out at 7.30 to do the feeding etc and I’ve only just come back in apart from two times to make coffee ๐Ÿ˜€ First off I started with cleaning out the quail and the geese and then onto the garden where I have done lots of clearing away, weeding, tidying and putting down weed membrane for the winter. I have potted up some plants that I dug up and divided and of course numerous wheelbarrows of wood chip (nearly done) It was really pleasant out there and I even took off my coat once the sun had thawed the frost, I finished about now because with the clocks changing it will be a short afternoon and so I need to get a few bits done inside before going back out again๐Ÿ˜œ

I had a phone all from the Doc to say although my white cells are going up they are doing so rather slowly so I need to keep having the bloods tests and stay off the meds.

Busy afternoon getting dinner sorted, lighting the Rayburn, feeding the animals, collecting the eggs then putting them all to bed at just after 5pm. Eat dinner, get a bit of shopping for tomorrow night ๐Ÿค”

Tuesday: Another dry day and I declined the offer of making Halloween cakes and pumpkin carving with the grandchildren because I know the rain is coming in and I wanted to get a bit more done outside. I have given the pear tree a winter prune and the gooseberries, I have cleared another bed and barrowed wood chip (nearly done ๐Ÿ˜œ) I’m going to keep saying that until it’s finally done lol and I planted up some ixia bulbs (corn lilies) I still have the tulips to do but I have time yet to sort them out. There is plenty to do in the garden at this time of year, clearing, cleaning, tidying, pruning, dividing, planting it’s as busy now as it is at the beginning of Spring. It is my favourite time of year as far as gardening goes because you can make an impact in a short time. In spring it’s a slow wait for things to grow but in autumn it’s quick to clear, well fairly quick and you can actually see what has been done.

I haven’t stayed out as long today because I want to get some soup on the go for tonight. We are going to have a sausages and stars evening, cooking sausages on the fire pit along with marshmallows and some soup and look at the starry sky although it’s looking a bit cloudy at the moment but a small outdoor adventure in the dark should be fun for the children. Last year when Josh came to stay I took him outside to look at the stars but it was so dark here that he was a bit afraid, actually he just clung to me and wouldn’t look up ๐Ÿ˜ฌ he is not afraid at home because in the town there is plenty of light pollution but here it’s pitch black!

We had the best fun tonight, leek and potato soup, sausages, chocolate cornflake cakes (made by the children) marshmallows toasted on the fire and finally sparklers, the cloud cover meant we didn’t see any stars but we had fun anyway.

Wednesday: Another nice day and John is home so we got a few things sorted. We did the morning rounds and then John set about the task of the gate post, yes this is still ongoing ๐Ÿ™„ as he ran out of time digging the old post out, today he has dug it out and concreted the new post in we just need to wait for it to set before re hanging the gate then it job done. Meanwhile I did some cutting back and digging up and dividing flowers or potting up ones that have not done very well where they were. We pulled back the netting on top of the fruit cage which is a two man job, we don’t want a repeat of heavy snow falling on it and collapsing the cage entirely ๐Ÿ˜ We fixed the end of a wooden planter box that had rotted and collapsed and then we went to witney to get some more compost and a rechargeable light for the chicken hut. When we got back I potted up a few more plants with the compost, I lit the fire, hoovered up, hung up the washing while John went and had a look at the sockets in the stable block and in the end contacted the electrician ๐Ÿ˜‚ I ordered a dog flap for the back door, a log basket for the kitchen, my prescription online, made a cup of tea and had a sit down before it’s time to feed and collect eggs ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

The plants I have been dividing up will all get put out for sale next year, they are free so it makes sense to do it and besides I am really enjoying myself. I also went around the garden and picked the last few remaining flowers to put in a vase, it’s surprising how many there are still going, the roses, dahlias, achillea, verbena, the very pretty blackcurrant sage which has flowered all summer long, cosmos, and chrysanthemums. Hopefully next year when my cutting bed is full I will have plenty of blooms to fill a vase on a regular basis ๐Ÿ˜€

I dug the Rayburn kettle out of the cupboard and gave it a good clean and descale, it makes sense to use this once the cooker is up and running for the winter and besides the whistling is a lovely sound addition to the day ๐Ÿ˜€

Thursday, Halloween ๐ŸŽƒ: It’s been another nice dry day so far although a tad chilly. I was up early polishing my broomstick ready for tonight ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜œ

I did the morning stuff then inside to get the paperwork done. It’s the end of year books which were due in April and each month I think ‘ I will get them done this month’ then the month goes past and the next month I think exactly the same ๐Ÿ™„ However I have done them all up ready to go now as I need to get my mind cleared before I can start thinking about Christmas and presents lol.

Once I had finished I set about making some spiced pumpkin bread, I normally would carve a pumpkin but nobody will be coming here so I used the whole pumpkin, minus the skin, to make purรฉe and then make the pumpkin bread. The recipe I used has American measures and I should know better as they usually seem to be double measures of everything, I will end up with two lots and so one can be frozen for later on in the year. I feel a bit redundant in the baking dept now that John is mostly cutting out sugar treats so today is a good excuse to do a bit of baking as a token to the day.

It’s Samhain today as well which is the end of the harvesting year and the beginning of the dark part of the year, we had our little family fire festival the other day so I will count that as part of the celebrations.

I’m proper grumpy this evening lol, John was supposed to be home early to hang the gate, it wouldn’t be a problem but the ducks keep going round to the front and routing through the planters ๐Ÿ˜ก anyhooo he didn’t get home early in fact it was after dark by which time after a busy day I was peed off to say the least, after all this smallish job has now gone on for over 5 days! An exchange of words takes place ๐Ÿคฌ and he goes out in the dark to do the gate which is now hung, this should make me happier but the grumps have set in and they won’t go away ๐Ÿ˜œ maybe I need chocolate!

Friday: It finally rained, I’m not complaining though we have been expecting it and at the moment it’s hasn’t been much so it may dry up over the course of the day. I did the morning rounds and then potted up some verbascum plug plants that I had ordered, the colours are delightful and I look forward to seeing them next year. I ordered 20 plug plants so probably some will go out for sale as I don’t need that many lol.

I am having Josh and Florence for an hour or so this morning so I haven’t got stuck into anything major

I suppose as this is a diary blog I really ought to address wider topics than what happens in my small world lol. We were supposed to leave the EU yesterday, that didn’t happen and the road we are on just got longer, whatever your opinion is I’m sure you are just as weary of it as I am.

Climate crisis, what can I say except if every individual did as much as they could towards saving the planet from the various man made disasters we have created that would go a long way towards putting on the brakes.

Saturday: It’s is an absolutely filthy morning this morning, John and I did the morning rounds together and ended up with soaking knees where the rain drips off the coat onto the knees, you would think a longer coat would be better but that then restricts your movement which is not ideal. We decided that as we can’t get much done outside today, coffee and the Rugby World Cup final would be a better option all together ๐Ÿ˜€

That didn’t last long, about three minutes into the match we had a message from Mum, our stepdad has been taken to hospital, with severe chest pains, he had gone off in the ambulance but Mum was at home so John and I went over, I stayed there most of the day while John had a rugby breakfast at Shelleys and then looked after the farm. We are lucky in that we have one of the best hospitals in the UK as our local hospital but still it’s a worrying time. It includes the Oxford university medical school which is ranked 1st in the world and has been for the last 7 years.

Mum had gone to the hospital with one of my stepbrothers and I waited there until we heard some news, they have stabilised him and now it’s a waiting game to find out how they will treat him.

Sunday: A better morning weather-wise this morning, one of the jobs we had planned this weekend was the dispatch of the meat birds but it was too wet yesterday and John has gone to visit his Mum this morning, we may get round to it at some point today we will just see how the day goes.

I potted up some more plug plants I had ordered, Tanacetum, from the aster family, one thing I learnt from watching gardeners world was about plug plants and how to pot them up so that they don’t just die off over winter. Not too big a pot is key and not much water initially, this is because the plants are about to go into their dormant phase and too much watering will just rot them off. These plants arrived and the roots were good and they were still moist so I just potted them and haven’t watered them at all for now. Labelling is what I have got good at with the flower plants because although you think you will remember what’s in the pot, you definitely won’t until it’s well established and only then if you are totally familiar with the plant itself.

My morning is interrupted by an egg customer ringing the bell to tell me that one of the turkeys is out down the driveway ๐Ÿ˜ 5 acres they have to roam on and they keep going down the driveway ๐Ÿ˜ what’s wrong with them, they have been shut in the pen for three days because they keep roaming the wrong way. Mind you the same can be said for half our hens, you will find them mostly in next doors paddock, I have no idea how better to contain them, free range, more like bloody roaming everywhere and anywhere!

We processed three of the cockerels and I must say I was really chuffed at how they turned out this time, previously for years I hand plucked them dry, then we got a plucking machine, as sometimes my fingers just can’t do the job, but the result was laughable to say the least, now we have invested in a burco boiler big enough to scald the birds in before they go to the plucking machine and voila it’s a total success ๐Ÿ˜€ We only did three as they will have to be gutted tomorrow and there is only so much time I want to spend with my hand inside a dead chicken ๐Ÿ˜œ but the whole process was much quicker & much cleaner so a winner as far as I am concerned. And of course it means we will have our own chicken in the freezer, we know what it’s eaten, how it has lived (freely) and that no chemicals have gone anywhere near it at all, happy days ๐Ÿ˜€

Minor mishaps, more rain & a jobs list ๐Ÿ˜€

Monday 21st October: We are rattling through the year now, always seems slower at this end than the warm end ๐Ÿ˜œ

Weekdays mean I’m on the duty rota for the feeding and letting out of the birds. I do it slightly differently to John and prefer to keep the birds shut in while they eat their feed and go back and let them out after. This is for two reasons, 1, they eat the feed otherwise they are off out to play and the feed is left meaning they are not getting the nutrients they need to be healthy or to lay well, reason 2 is that they are then not all under my feet while I am going from pen to pen, John lets them out as he goes.

When I have finished I look forward to a cup of coffee and I usually sit down and take the time to try and learn something new by reading up a topic that has caught my eye or ear over the weekend. Today though I am having an in depth look at quail, their natural habitat and feeding. Our quail seem a bit unhappy at the minute, they were fine until I introduced new males to the females and now the ladies have stopped laying ๐Ÿ™„ Potentially this is coincidence as the light levels drop and the temps drop but I want to make sure I am not missing anything vital. Having read up I am going to up the amount of seed in various forms and see what happens, I will also pick them up one of their favourite treats of mealworm for extra protein. If that fails to get them laying I may have to bring them in under a lamp as they may just be too cold and using all their energy to keep warm.

I did a trial growing of amaranth, millet and quinoa this year to see how they did, the amaranth was fine and grew well although it didn’t ripen, the un ripe seed will still get used to feed the quail probably, the millet was less successful producing only one stem though I think that has more to do with how I grew it (a trial bed was too small an area and got crowded with the amaranth and tree spinach) the quinoa was totally unsuccessful and nothing grew, again I think a larger area would have been more beneficial. If it taught me anything it’s that the amaranth can indeed be grown in a garden setting while the other two need more agricultural conditions I would say and that’s what trialling is for ๐Ÿ™„

A great spotted woodpecker landed on an oak tree bough outside the kitchen door with a beak full of grubs/caterpillars, I wondered if it had young somewhere nearby which would be completely the wrong time of year, I couldn’t find any information other than they lay eggs March to May so hopefully he was hoarding for himself otherwise any young probably would do well at this time of year. Having said it’s the wrong time of year one of my clematis have also reflowered? This one is an early flowering variety and had already flowered once back in April, further proof, as if we needed it, that the seasons are all over the place ๐Ÿค”

I did a few hours outside including moving more wood chip ๐Ÿ˜œ I also moved the torts hut into the greenhouse where they will spend the winter in hibernation, I had to cut a pop hole a bit bigger as Billy was trying to ram himself through it without much luck. I potted up a couple of kiwi that had rooted in the pathway and a Japanese honeysuckle, I cleared some dead stuff and pulled some weeds for the rabbits/guineas.

Sam came over in the afternoon with the twiglets and Mia, we made some gingerbread men although I might find a different recipe next time as this one seemed to have a lot of molasses in it which overpowered the ginger so I guess they were actually molasses men ๐Ÿ˜‚

Oh and I was really surprised to see the garlic I planted only last week has already begun to shoot ๐Ÿ˜€

Tuesday: It looks promising for a fine, sunny October day today ๐Ÿ˜€

Every morning when I come in after doing the rounds I make coffee and stand at the stable door in the kitchen for a bit having a look out, and everyday for the past few weeks I have been having a conversation with Cyril ๐Ÿฟ A one sided conversation obviously ๐Ÿ˜œ not that far gone yet! ‘Morning Cyril, what are you collecting today’ at this point he either stands stock still hoping I can’t see him or he shoots off up to the top of the oak tree faster than the speed of light lol.

When I first went out this morning I could hear the Lions roaring really loudly today, I got my phone out to try and record it but by the time I had done that they had stopped. It must have been breakfast time for them or something and I thought, crikey if it’s that loud here (approx a mile away) how loud must it be stood right near them ๐Ÿค”

First major job on the list was to put up electric fencing in the next paddock for the horses to eat off, we did put them in there last week but they bust through into the large paddock so they went back to the side paddock until I could get it sorted. Jack has been charging at me for the last two days so I’m guessing he is hungry. A few minor hiccups, the electric sockets in the stable block still don’t work so had to work out how to get the cable to the other side of the field and still get power. While doing this and feeding the cable along side the paddock, I got to the field gate pulled the cable and the plug end caught the top of the gate, flicked up and smacked me clean on the forehead, ๐Ÿ˜ฃ Next plug in the fence charger and make sure it works, yep clicking loudly, move the box so it can be covered from rain and doh second whack from the electric pulse ๐Ÿคฌ have I earned the rest of the day off yet ๐Ÿ˜œ probably not but I am going to find something pleasant to do ๐Ÿ˜€

So I spent a good few hours in the garden weeding and clearing, spreading wood chip, the asparagus bed was the main target, it was lovely out there and I have dirty knees to prove I did indeed do a bit ๐Ÿ˜€

Last year I did chop and drop but I’m not doing that this year lol, I found it was too messy come spring so this year I’m clearing but I have left a pile of asparagus fern choppings where the rhubarb is so that anything that needs a winter home has got one available.

You know when you think ๐Ÿค” ah well the day will get better I’m sure, nope, so after my two minor mishaps this morning I had a third (hopefully we are done now) I was doing the feeding and collecting eggs, I stopped to take a photo of the cat, Benny, drinking out of the horse bucket, I thought it would provide a little amusement ๐Ÿ˜œ I carried on with my rounds and tripped over fresh air, yes fresh air, well there was nothing else around and I hadn’t had any wine it was only four o’clock! That wasn’t the end of the mishap, oh no because if that wasn’t bad enough I put my hand out to stop my face from hitting the dirt and it went straight into the bucket of eggs I had just collected ๐Ÿคฌ and faster than a Kit Kat disappears at a weight loss meeting Benny was in the bucket snacking on broken eggs ๐Ÿ˜ญ

My thoughts went like this ‘ffs I’m done today’ ‘I want to cry’ ‘have I broken anything’ ‘nope, better carry on then’ My knee hurts and I have a bit of a headache, hoping that isn’t the head injury this morning ๐Ÿ™„

I am actually going to blame varifocals, I would like a formal inquiry into the correlation of varifocal wearers and minor accidents like mine ๐Ÿ˜ฌ I can’t see clearly without them but my spacial awareness is not as accurate as it used to be when I’m wearing them, hence I’m always bumping my head when I have to duck under something, seriously I think there is definitely something in this, either that or my glasses are just crap ๐Ÿค“

Wednesday: I thought it was going to warm up today but the sun never actually burnt through the mist and by lunchtime I decided I should light the Rayburn. It’s dry though so I am not complaining ๐Ÿ˜€ Apart from the usual I haven’t actually done much today ๐Ÿ™„ I have done a fair bit of reading up on various topics, cut flowers, autumn gardening jobs and how many sexes there are ๐Ÿ˜œ a random one that but something came up on my news feed and I just had to look further into it lol, scientists have a blob that is neither a fungus nor a plant/animal and it has 720 sexes, what, how, those questions and more are what I asked myself so I had to find out. I actually didn’t get very far as the explanation was beyond my understanding so I’m leaving that particular topic alone for now lol.

Thursday: It’s 11.45 and it’s raining ๐ŸŒง fear not though it has been pretty dry all morning and I have been very busy ๐Ÿ˜€ After the rounds I went straight out to the veg garden and got stuck into clearing one of the beds. This one is behind the fruit cage next to the brassica cage and I have decided that this is where I will grow flowers, a strange choice maybe as it can’t be seen from the seating areas but there is method in my madness. The beds at the far end are difficult for me to manage, they get the first lot of sun in the morning and then all day until the sun goes down, I very often can’t get out there because it’s too hot and there is no shade. So my plan is to plant perennial flowers on most of it along with some annuals, this will be my cut flower bed ๐Ÿ’ I cleared the bed which had beetroot and fennel still growing in there and then a good few barrows of well rotted manure went on top, I didn’t weed because I then put on a weed membrane and secured it with pegs. By the time I got to the end it was beginning to spit but undeterred I then tackled the other end of the bed, this end I have decided to try a thick layer of wood chip, as I have plenty, and see how that turns out compared to the membrane and manure. It will be a good comparison, it might work better, it might not, only time will tell, the winter weather can now do it’s work and hopefully under the membrane all the insects will be doing their bit as well. Just as I had finished it started to rain heavily so that was good timing. One thing I realised this morning, in fact all this week is that I am only limited by the Lupus, by that I mean I can still do a good mornings hard graft, I was beginning to think I couldn’t and would maybe have to give a lot of it up but no, it seems that if and that’s a BIG IF, if I can keep the disease on an even keel I can do the jobs I want to get done. I have repeat bloods again tomorrow to see if my white cells are going back up before I go back on the meds but I am wondering now if the meds are too much as I keep see sawing on them, might be time to have a conversation with my consultant about the dosage.

This part of the garden by the way is where I was trying out the permaculture and I had my first guild, the comfrey did fantastically every thing else not so, the apple tree eventually died but it had been moved once already because it was failing so I’m guessing it just wasn’t meant to be. Never be afraid to admit when things don’t work out and you have to start over ๐Ÿ˜

Friday: By the time I’d finished the morning rounds of feeding watering and letting out it was raining ๐ŸŒง hmm I was hoping for a dry day but it’s not to be so I turned my thoughts to chutney. Remember the basket full of green tomatoes that I was hoping would ripen, well they haven’t lol and so chutney making is on the cards. Luckily I had picked a bucket full of apples from the front tree, these are eating apples but they will be fine in a chutney as they are keeper apples and are pretty firm. I surveyed the tree while I was picking and it really needs a good prune and I’m wondering if John and I are up to it or if I get the chap who did the cooking apple last year to come and do it. It’s a case of money expenditure versus strength/energy expenditure, I will see what John says. It needs doing because most of the apples, around 60/70% were tiny and in clumps, a fair few were a double apple so an apple with an extra lump and out of the rest which were all ok there were quite a few with maggot.

Bloods this morning before I can decide what to get on with.

I didn’t get anything else done lol as Shelley and the children came back with me then Sam and the children came over, just as well as it wasn’t a very nice day out, Sam and Mia did the feeding and egg collecting in the afternoon so I didn’t even have to do that ๐Ÿ˜€

There were a large flock of long tailed tits in the oak tree today, I always say they arrive when the weather is about to get very cold (snow even) so we will see over the next few days if I am right.

Saturday: It was a filthy night last night, rain, wind, orrible, and it’s not any better this morning though not as windy. We did the morning stuff then John went off to get some feed and I sorted some bits in the greenhouse, beetroot and swede I had pulled up when I did the bed ready for winter. It doesn’t look like we will do much outside at all today but that’s fine, we need to get a list sorted of jobs that need doing eventually such as the greenhouse leak and the electric sockets in the stable block. I have messaged the chap about pruning the tree as John decided he didn’t want to do it and we have some beef arriving from a smallholder this afternoon.

I ordered a baby burco so that we can scald these chickens and get them done and in the freezer, I have got to an age where I don’t want to be doing it and I don’t mean because I’m getting too old but I am getting too soft ๐Ÿ˜ It’s always been a fine line that you tread when raising your own meat and the older I have got the more I dislike doing the deed but I also am not ready to give up eating meat yet and so the option is meat from the supermarket or from another smallholder. I can easily get lamb and beef, we don’t really eat much pork except bacon and sausage, but chickens are more difficult to get unless you get them from a farm shop and then they are pretty expensive. The expense I have to say is justified as usually they are quite big chickens and you can get three meals out of it and of course they are much more tasty, not pumped full of water and not bleached either so worth the spend but not when you can raise your own.

It turned into an busy couple of hours in the afternoon, John decided to clear the drain that runs across the driveway because the water was not getting away, the rain has not let up at all and now we have the river and lake back in the side paddocks. My nephew and nephew in law arrived with a lorry full of wood for the Rayburn, it has to be cut up yet but it’s old oak from a roof and so it will burn nicely. Then my beef delivery turned up, we ordered from smallholder Emma’s Ewesful Acres ://www.emmasewesfulacres.com/news she does lamb as well but we already have some, I made some rock cakes as a treat and got the Rayburn going, then there was the feeding and eggs to do so rather than sitting down doing a bit of reading like I planned I was busy as a bee ๐Ÿ

We have a nice grass fed steak for dinner tonight ๐Ÿ˜€

Sunday: Clocks went back. A pleasant, sunny morning after a cold night and a frost bit at least no rain ๐Ÿ˜€ John did the morning rounds while I cleaned out the Rayburn flues and did some hoovering.

Yesterday I made a list of jobs that need doing and this morning we have got on with some of them, disconnect the water pipes from the veg garden before we get a big freeze and a pipe burst โœ… Put the horse box up for sale as we don’t really need it โœ… John has added a few of his own jobs and of course prioritised those ๐Ÿ˜ so at the moment only one of the jobs on my list for him has been done ๐Ÿ™„

I am a little bit excited to tell you that I have booked a workshop for myself at a local organic farm and I will be learning about sustainable floristry, I am not planning on going into floristry in a big way lol but I would like to know a bit more about sustainable cut flowers and arranging them so I treated myself ๐Ÿ˜€

After identifying yet another job that was not on my list I managed to steer John onto one that was ๐Ÿ˜‚ We have a 6ft wide gate by the side of the house that has a smaller 4ft one as well, in the spring the posts rotted away and the small gate post got done but not the bigger one, we don’t open it much anyway but when we do it has to be lifted off the ground so that post needed doing which I have managed to get him working on, he has also loaded up the wood store so he has earned some brownie points today ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Meanwhile I have been barrowing wood chip to the paths in the veg garden ๐Ÿ™„ I still have plenty left to do but I have managed to cover a large part of it already.

Sam, Luke, Mia and the twiglets came over and took Biscuit for a walk up the road and Mia had a sit on her back while she was led around the school. Biscuit was exceptionally good once we managed to get her away from the field, I think she thought she would never see Jack again, they have become firm friends.

Light the fire, get the dinner sorted and it’s dark just after 5pm ๐Ÿ˜ roll on to the shortest day ๐Ÿ™„

Have a fabulous week everyone ๐Ÿ˜€

A lot of rain, a lot of wood-chip & a few celebrations ๐Ÿ˜€

Monday 14th October: Not raining this morning and it hasn’t rained overnight ๐Ÿ˜€ although by 12pm Mother nature just couldn’t help herself ๐Ÿ˜œ However I did manage to get some good jobs done before the rain started, John had cleaned both the big hen huts over the weekend and so it was my turn to clean out some pens. I started with the duck hut, got all the wet soggy straw out and put nice clean stuff back in although it won’t stay like that very long ๐Ÿ˜ next it was the turn of the quail, clean out all the wet, dirty soggy stuff and refresh with clean, dry straw. I also got a piece of polycarbonate (which actually was for another job but I can get some more) and stapled it to the side of the hut, putting the dogs away first of course otherwise Mia would take off ๐Ÿคช The polycarbonate is to stop the rain blowing in and this making a nicer environment for the quail, it’s see-through which is perfect for letting light in but keeping the wet off. They seemed pretty happy with it all, I also gave them a bit of a treat with some wild bird seed. Next onto cleaning out the Turkey pen, I let them out to roam as it’s easier to do it without them in there, there are signs of rats so I need to sort that out.

After that is when it began to rain so I tackled the small poly tunnel, Monty Don says the tomatoes won’t ripen anymore and I am inclined to agree with him, so I picked all the remaining tomatoes, green and ripe ones and cleared the plants from the tunnel. I have put the basketful in the shed as he says they may ripen in the dark, I’ll give it a go and if they don’t it’s green tomato chutney time ๐Ÿ˜€ I put in a top dressing of fresh compost and planted the left side with garlic bulbs, the two small tubs I have sown some giant winter spinach and hopefully they will all grow well. I did notice some mouse activity in there, clusters of eaten hazelnuts and tell tale holes so I have set the mousetrap ๐Ÿ˜ I don’t want the garlic bulbs all eaten before they get going.

With that job done I then picked some broccoli and purple sprouting spears for dinner tonight and picked a few bits that had gone to seed and gave them to the rabbit/guineas who squealed with delight lol.

I took a couple of other photos while I was out there, the first was a little ‘shroom village’ I love his time of year when these appear all over the place, I like to imagine that they are indeed little villages ๐Ÿ˜œ The second photo is of our ducks making the most of the recent downpours which has left a small lake in the corner of the paddock. The river that goes with it has now gone but it has left a playground for them to enjoy. Late last night when we were stood out there we could hear wild ducks also enjoying the temporary feature.

Lunchtime ๐Ÿ˜€ then tidy and clean the boot room, I have been looking at ways to improve this room, gently showing pictures of a built in thing to John lol. Ideally I would like a bench to sit on when getting boots on and off, mostly for the grandchildren ๐Ÿ˜‰ and I have a few other ideas that would make the room more workable than it is at the moment, we will see, it may never happen but it just might if I’m lucky โ˜บ๏ธ

Well that took me all afternoon and then some to tackle the boot room ๐Ÿ˜œ I managed to bin a black bag full of stuff and a black bag full of old coats, gloves etc for the clothes bin and now it looks a whole lot better than before. I have also secured a date from Martin to do some carpentry out there ๐Ÿ˜€ Hopefully I will eventually get a room that works rather than a room I have to work around ๐Ÿ™„ The only problem with getting it sorted is that a lot of it got put out into the next undercover bit lol so guess what is on the jobs list for tomorrow.

A bonus of tidying and sorting was that in the preserves cupboard there is mincemeat and I found a couple of bottles of sloe gin I have made either last year or the year before ๐Ÿ˜€

It hammered down again this afternoon and John came home early to a few jobs lol, the eggs and feeding because I was still knee deep in boot room junk, then rod the drain out the back because the water was starting to come in, change a light bulb (not an ordinary one or I would have done it myself) haha no peace for the wicked ๐Ÿ˜œ

Dinner, animals shut away, dogs washed so they can come into the clean boot room and the day is done. And still it keeps on raining ๐Ÿ˜

Tuesday: So as stated the job on the list this morning was the undercover back area but first the animals all need feeding and letting out. On my first trip up to the small back paddock I can see that Jack has let himself out into the large paddock, Biscuit, bless her has stayed where she should. She is a very sweet little Shetland pony, they can have the affectionate term of ‘shitlands’ ๐Ÿ˜‚ but she is not of that ilk…..not yet!

Onto the job in hand and starting to sort out what needs keeping and putting away and what needs throwing out. Over the years we seem to have accumulated a huge array of gadgets and gizmos that do various jobs around the place, sometimes they may only get used once a year, sometimes they are in constant use just depends on what needs doing. One thing we do have a lot of is horse paraphernalia ๐Ÿ™„ anyone who has horses or has someone living with them will know that they don’t throw anything away. They also get given old stuff from people giving up the horses and so it continues until the place is stuffed with numnahs, bridles, head collars, saddles and rugs of every type, one for the wet, one for the cold, one for a bit wetter or a bit colder, one for -5 -10 -15 one for the summer, one for the flies, its endless, pretty sure the horse couldn’t give a flying **** about being trussed up and would love to just run free ๐Ÿ˜œ That said I have found spaces for it all and the rest of the stuff and it’s looking a whole lot tidier out there which in turn gives me a clear mind and a happy disposition, objective achieved ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Yesterday when I was tidying up the boot room I was sighing at the amount of alcohol that was in the preserves cupboard, we don’t drink that much, some of it came from Johns Mums house, most of it from birthdays and parties that didn’t get used and is still there. Then I looked in another fridge we have out the back that is not plugged in and more bottles of various alcoholic beverages, I’m thinking of having a bottle stall ๐Ÿ˜œ

I have discovered a leak in my greenhouse ๐Ÿ˜ not a big one but with all the rain we are having it’s finding it’s way in, I have mentioned it to John and it looks like a roof window so as soon as the weather backs off we will fix it.

The sun shone beautifully this afternoon and it was most welcome in fact I went out to the front and just stood there letting it warm me, it had a good bit of warmth in it too considering the time of year. It made doing the afternoon rounds a pleasant job instead of drudgery.

Wednesday: Turned out to be a lovely day full of sunshine. In the morning after the rounds I did a bit in the big tunnel, I can’t do as much as I want to get done because I want to protect the pathways with the wood chip before I start barrowing manure into there, so I did some cutting back and tidying up. I sorted out some tomatoes and the little bit of remaining veg to go out for sale and found a bucketful of greens for the rabbit/guineas.

The guy came with the wood chip which was handy, the pile is huge and he has more if I want it. I got stuck into moving some of it straightaway, 15 shovel fulls in each barrow, around 30 loads, backwards and forwards until I was a bit pooped lol, and hot because the sun was still shinning fiercely. It should easily do all the pathways in the veg garden with a good thick cover which will kill off the weeds and make walking round the garden a lot less messier after the rain ๐Ÿ˜€ a quick rest and cool down before the afternoon feeding gets done.

It took me half an hour to cool down and another 15 mins to be able to move ๐Ÿคช

I did think that after doing the rounds I wouldn’t be able to do any more woodchip moving but I found a bit in the reserve tank and did a few more barrowfuls. The sun was beginning to sink lower and lower, as it was still sunny the gnats were up and dancing into the night and I have enough issues to process without all over bites adding to the mix so I called it a day.

At dark John usually puts the animals away to bed, when the clocks change and it gets dark early it will be my job but for now it’s his. Tonight he called on me to help him as Ted was up on the roof, who is Ted I asked him, Ted the Turkey he replied ๐Ÿ˜‚ I had no idea he had named him, just him it seems as he is the only one of the three that won’t go to bed nicely lol.

Thursday: A cold night and a ground frost this morning, I made the mistake of thinking because it was sunny yesterday it would be warm enough not to light the Rayburn, wrong, it was cold and a tad damp which is even worse ๐Ÿ™„ So it will probably get lit every night from here on in and eventually will be running all day and night.

I did the morning rounds and then went to check on the torts as I do each morning, I can’t find Billy ๐Ÿ˜ he was there yesterday and they can’t get out, I will do another good search later but judging by the ground disturbance where I last saw him something has taken him, he is pretty heavy mind you and I wouldn’t think an animal would get far with him, also he would be pretty difficult to eat if not impossible.

I went out to get my hair cut with Shelley and when we came back Sam was here with the twiglets. Shelley went to have a look for the tortoise and crisis averted it seems I didn’t look hard enough ๐Ÿ˜‚

The chap with the woodchip came with a second load ๐Ÿ˜ฌ and now I literally have heaps of it.

Did the afternoon rounds, lit the Rayburn got the dinner ready and sat down with a cuppa ๐Ÿ˜€

Friday: Repeat blood tests this morning so up and on with it ๐Ÿ˜€ I went to Shelleys afterwards where we put together a new toddler bed for Florence and then had some soup before returning home. Shelley stayed for a bit and barrowed some woodchip with Josh and Flo helping until they got bored and cold lol. This evening we are going to Sams for tapas so I made those, I did dates stuffed with sheep’s cheese and wrapped in prosciutto and some gluten free mushroom pin wheels, I also roasted a bunch of grapes to see how they would turn out ๐Ÿ™„

I bought some kefir the last time we went shopping and I had a sup today but I have found it makes me feel sick, it’s the second time I have tried it and the same result so I maybe won’t be trying that again. Kombucha I can tolerate so will stick to that I think.

Saturday: A dry start to the day, John did the morning rounds while I did housework, a bit more in depth than a run around of the hoover and a flick of the duster this time ๐Ÿ˜‚ So that took up a large part of the day and I can now see the top of the kitchen table which had got clogged up with ‘stuff’ John meanwhile did some cleaning out of the hens and cut back some tree branches that snapped off last winter and were overhanging the neighbours field.

In the afternoon we watched the live parliament debates wondering what the heck is going to happen with Brexit and hope that they sort something out sooner rather than later.

It was Johns 40 year school reunion this evening which was great fun, considering it wasn’t my year or even my school I knew quite a few people there, having never moved away we both still see a lot of old school friends locally.

Oooo yes and Charlie and Macca got engaged today ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

Sunday: A clear night last night meant a cold start to the day this morning ๐Ÿ™„ John did the morning rounds while I did some mundane household jobs ๐Ÿคช Then we went out for breakfast which made a nice change. John went off to visit his Mum and I took the time to get into the greenhouse and pot up a few plants that my Mum had bought over, some stocks (a nice cottage garden flower) and some dancing ladies which are rose campion but in various different colours. I just need to decide where I am going to plant all these flowers lol and also decide if I am going to totally rearrange the garden (which will be a mighty task) or just to modify it.

Tea and cake in the afternoon at Mums for my niece Zeraphina’s 3rd birthday and not is that another day done but also another week.

Take care and take time to enjoy something everyday however small.

Lots of rain, passata & baked beans ๐Ÿ˜œ

Monday 30th Sept: Oh donโ€™t you just love Monday mornings ๐Ÿ™„ I wanted to get on but the gremlins are at it again, half way into feeding the electric trips again ๐Ÿ˜ Our electric consists of 4 fuse boxes each one reaching further out into the farm, so the main box is in the kitchen, then we have another in the outer building another in the stable block and then one in the hay barn. This means multiple trips backwards and forwards to discover which fuse is actually causing the problem, I unplug everything and turn everything off and go through a process of elimination backwards and forwards, plugging back in as I go until I am left with the stable fuse box which is knocking out the main box in the house. Eventually I find the individual fuse that is causing the problem so now we have everything working except the sockets in the stable block, everything is unplugged but itโ€™s still not staying on so Iโ€™m guessing itโ€™s actually a socket that is the problem but which one ๐Ÿคช The problem is that this ring of sockets are the ones out to the electric fencing in the side paddock so Iโ€™m hoping the horses and the chickens donโ€™t work it out until we get it sorted ๐Ÿ™„ At least I can make a coffee now ๐Ÿ˜€

I spent the rest of the morning out in the veg garden, it is supposed to rain later so Iโ€™m taking advantage of the dry morning. First some weeding and tidying of the small poly tunnel and then onto some small raised beds, all the weeds went to the rabbits and turkeys who were happy to have some greens. Iโ€™m covering beds with weed membrane as I clear them, it will save me a whole heap of time in the spring and I did a couple of beds last year and it worked well, besides if I donโ€™t get round to planting into them they will stay manageable. I squished a few caterpillars in the brassica cage, mainly on the sprouts, John loves them and so I grow 2/3 plants each year for Christmas. Then onto picking a few things, I still have plenty of tomatoes, a few courgettes, some peppers, the odd cucumber, thousands of hazelnuts on the floor ๐Ÿ˜‚ so Iโ€™m still gathering in the harvest so to speak. I picked a few raspberries then some blackberries and by this time itโ€™s lunchtime so I made an almond milk, banana, raspberry and blackberry smoothie and had a quick sit down before starting on tidying the house ๐Ÿ™„

The rain came on cue as I was hoovering ๐Ÿ˜ so I spent some more time tidying up and sorting out tonightโ€™s dinner, then out to do the afternoon rounds and collect the eggs.

I saw Cyril the squirrel tip toeing across my lawn, I said โ€˜I can see you Cyrilโ€™ at which point he stood stock still lol, then I said โ€˜itโ€™s ok you can have the rest of the nuts Iโ€™m done collectingโ€™ ๐Ÿ˜œ and he scuttled off towards the walnut tree.

John came home and we deduced that is one of the actual sockets that is causing the electric to trip, we now have to figure out which of the sockets it is and whatโ€™s causing it. As they are all inside at a guess something has got inside but thatโ€™s the best guess we have at the minute. The electric fencing will have to be plugged in the back here instead of the stable block and it needs doing before the horses realise itโ€™s not on so that is Johns job later as I am going for a massage ๐Ÿ˜œ

The lady and little girl that we got the pony from came over to see how she had settled in, very well so no worries there. We were in the field when a VERY LOW FLYING Chinook came right over where we were standing, you can imagine how the horses reacted not to mention the chickens flying everywhere. That has to be the lowest I have seen one fly and itโ€™s bloody dangerous for both the horses and people when you are in the field and that happens. I sent a complaint via the website e-mail but it was returned as undelivered, typical, I have complained by phone in the past and found it doesnโ€™t make any difference anyhow, so in future if I hear a helicopter I will get out of the field quickly!

Tuesday October 1st ๐Ÿ˜ฎ We are trying to get up earlier, we have been getting up around 7.15 which is quite late really. Last night I set the alarm but apparently did not turn it on ๐Ÿ™„ so again today it was around 7.15 before we got up. I like to think itโ€™s the natural body clock and that itโ€™s something we should follow and perhaps if we were both working here we would but John has to be at peoples houses before they go to work so thatโ€™s out of the window, for him at any rate ๐Ÿ˜œ I got the morning rounds done and it was already spitting with rain, by 9am we had a full on downpour and I think itโ€™s set for most of the day so I havenโ€™t made any plans to go back outside until necessary at feeding and egg collecting time later this afternoon. I have plenty I can turn my hand to indoors, some very outstanding paperwork, making some kind of sugar free goodies, checking thoroughly through the cctv to see if I can find out what actually happened to the cat. The more I think about it the less I think he just took off, I think he would have returned by now if that was the case, so Iโ€™m left with an accident of some sort or he has been taken, by what or who I donโ€™t know and maybe the cctv can help, but there are nearly 100 hours of footage to look through ๐Ÿ˜

I just had a quick look at the forecast, heavy rain right through to 9pm ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

So rather than wall to wall rain, the sun actually came out ? By that time I was knee deep in paperwork ๐Ÿ˜ but on the plus side the farm accounts are up to date, just need to do the plumbing ones but that can wait for another day, my eyes are tired, not used to doing a days paperwork anymore lol.

I felt the need for some stodgy food for dinner so we had a beef slice with homegrown mash potatoes and broccoli and then I made a sugar free pudding, basically I made a fruit sponge pudding with stevia instead of sugar, we had a small amount of ice cream with it and felt very full and satisfied. I know there are many people moving to a plant based diet but I wonder how many of them do a proper physical job, heavy lifting, digging, carrying 20kg sacks, lugging stuff about all day, working outside in the cold, I would bet not many, you really need some excellent fuel when you are doing jobs like that I think. Not one to write something and then carry on regardless, I looked it up, it seems you can do manual labour but supplements are mentioned and careful balancing of the diet is a must.

Wednesday: I had finished the morning rounds and was just finishing my coffee when Mum arrived to do some work ๐Ÿ˜€ Iโ€™m sure she has more than enough work of her own but she comes over to help when she can, love her ๐Ÿ˜˜ Rather than work on the veg garden which is sodden we decided to sort out the plants directly in front of the house. When I put them all out there I had a definite idea of how I wanted it to look, which never really transpired due to one thing or another and now itโ€™s looking, frankly, a muddle at the very least. So we moved pots around and took things out and put other pots in then got some of the weeds out of the gravel until it looked more structured and less cluttered. The sun was shinning so it was a good location to be working in.

John came home for lunch and a cuppa then after he left I cleaned out the rabbit which Josh has named Rosie and she is doing really well he even held her on his lap yesterday ๐Ÿ˜€ Then I went out and planted a few of the tulip bulbs in the driveway grass area, a bit of cheer for spring, we planted some crocus under the apple tree a month or so ago so it should be nice and cheery in the early part of the year. Itโ€™s getting near to (but not quite time for) feeding and so when I go out at this time of day I have stalkers ๐Ÿ˜‹ the pitter patter of tiny hens feet and sometimes they are not even that subtle, launching themselves on a bucket if I happen to have one in my hand no matter what is in it!

By the way itโ€™s a fab day, the sun is shinning and itโ€™s not cold a real boost after the last week of rain.

Thursday: A frost again this morning, thatโ€™s two in a row and so the high water content veg will soon be showing signs of going over, the courgettes and outdoor tomatoes especially, the rhubarb leaves which were already wilting will fall off, the leaves on the trees will begin to brown and fall quicker ๐Ÿ˜” There is no stopping the march of time into Winter ๐Ÿ˜œ

Cor blimey that is a tad chilly out this morning, I came back in and put my wax jacket on instead of my gillet and even the ends of my fingers were feeling it inside my gloves ๐Ÿ™„ I flicked the electric fire on in the living room to take the chill off the air. John and I discussed lighting the Rayburn but itโ€™s a difficult time of year to get it right, the building does not take much to heat it up so having the Rayburn on would make it too warm in here but without it itโ€™s decidedly chilly in the evenings and early morning especially when itโ€™s a cold night like last night. The temps today are forecast to be up to 13c but that is even through the night which would then be too warm and we would be sweating lol, ideally once the Rayburn is lit it wants to be kept going so itโ€™s game of wait and see how long we can tolerate the chill for. The lucky thing is that the year before John cut enough wood for two winters, this will be the second one so he will have to cut more next Spring, lucky because he hasnโ€™t felt well for a few months and so would never have got it done and we would have had to buy in. The good news is that he is feeling and looking much better, he is getting the hang of a healthier diet and rarely has cake, choc or biscuits and has cut down to around 5 cups of tea a day, anyone who knows him will realise what a big change that has been ๐Ÿ˜œ But he is much better for it ๐Ÿ˜€

I am having a coffee contemplating what jobs to do today, topping up bedding straw in some of the sheds/huts is a definite, especially as itโ€™s got colder and wetter, the torts need to be monitored closely now to watch for them closing down towards hibernation. They need clean straw packed into their hut which they will spend more and more time in, when they no longer come out they will be packed away and put in the shed until next spring. There are the tomatoes of course lol, I will probably have a go at the Passata today, the last of the walnuts need cleaning up and drying ready for use and there is plenty I could do on the garden, some self set potatoes that need digging up and always at this time of year clearing of dead or dying stuff ah decisions decisions ๐Ÿค”

I decided that first off, as I have been talking about it long enough and besides it was still a tad cold out, that I would make the passata. As I was doing it I was still thinking that I would freeze it but I have taken the plunged and put it jars and then in a water bath whoo hoo go me ๐Ÿ˜œ I will put two jars in the fridge just to be on the safe side but the other I will put in the dark preserves cupboard and leave it a while to see how it stores. I did the traditional Italian method (almost) but I think I would change a couple of things next time, the Italian way is processing the fresh tomato so no blanching to remove the skins as a lot of the flavour is in the skin apparently. I used some overripe toms and some just ripe but I would always use overripe in future as they are much easier, the bigger toms I used had a lot of flesh so they were fine but the smaller ones probably should have been scooped out and the middles put to the side, only small changes but things I think would make it better, the Italians by the way do scoop out but these were cherry toms so a bit fiddly. I kept the pulp pure so no basil or garlic because I may use it for chilli which wonโ€™t require basil. Not having a mooli ๐Ÿ™„ I used, firstly a steamer pan and squished them through the bigger holes then a sieve and the back of a wooden spoon to get as much as I could from them, a bit of effort required but not too bad with a small batch. I didnโ€™t weigh the tomatoes but I ended up with three 1lb jars which I felt was a good ratio for the tomatoes I used. The pan has a clean tea towel in the bottom and wrapped round the jars to stop them moving about and as a bonus my tea towel gets a good boiling, win win I say ๐Ÿ˜€ It smells like a Chinese laundry in the kitchen with the tea towel boiling away, I know the smell because pre children I used to work in one (not a Chinese one but I like the saying) it reminded me of the hot washed sheets as they went through a huge roller machine that would dry and press them at the same time, funny how smells can bring back long ago memories.

Well I got the jars out of the water bath and the passata has separated ๐Ÿ˜ nothing was ever mentioned in anything I have read so I did some further research and it seems that blanching the tomatoes is a very good idea, I didnโ€™t do it remember, itโ€™s a good idea because it destroys an enzyme that cause the separation of tomato and liquid, so in future I will definitely be blanching, apparently itโ€™s still fine to use, it just doesnโ€™t look good in the jar lol.

This is what I found:

โ€˜During storage, pulp and juice in home canned tomatoes may separate, especially in sauce or juice made with crushed or purรฉed tomatoes. Separation is caused by an enzyme, Pectose (Pectinesterarse), found in high concentrations in tomatoes. The enzyme is activated when tomatoes are cut. To reduce separation, heat tomatoes quickly over high heat to 82 C (180 F) to destroy the enzymeโ€™

We decided with the weather forecast for this evening, windy and wet, that we would light the Rayburn and so not one to waste the use of free cooking I cooked the first dinner of the winter on the top ๐Ÿ˜€ It will be nice to have warm dry towels and a overall warmth in the house.

Friday: I did the morning rounds and then mostly had the day off ๐Ÿ˜œ I went with Shelley, Josh and Flo to soft play where we met Sam, Mia & the twiglets as they have become affectionately known. By the time we got back in the afternoon John was already home and had lit the Rayburn, he went and got a few bits of shopping and then did the afternoon rounds while I did some tidying and hoovering. Shelley, Martin and the kids came over after tea and picked up Rosie the rabbit to take back to theirs and then early evening Charlie came over and we had cheese, wine and a proper natter, day done, bedtime ๐Ÿ˜ด

Saturday: We got the rounds done had a coffee then went off to a local tractor spares jumble sale ๐Ÿ˜€ not just tractor parts there I should say but plenty of old and interesting bits and pieces too. I bought some lovely old tools, the craftsmanship is so much better than todayโ€™s stuff, a lovely old back hoe, I have been wanting to get one for ages and a lovely old fork, nice and light, little and beautifully made, no doubt it was a much loved tool for somebody. I also bought an old galvanised paint bucket, yesterday I went to the garden centre looking for something to plant into and everything is so expensive for what it was. This cost me a fiver, a bit of time cleaning it up and making holes in the bottom and voila a lovely planter for a splash of colour, happy as a pig in poo this morning ๐Ÿ˜€

When we returned John went to power wash the POL pen and I went into the garden, the outdoor tomatoes have blight which is a shame as there are loads of fruit on them, some beefsteak and some cherry but none of them any good so I pulled them all up and took them to the burning pile. I watered the poly tunnel, I keep forgetting that it needs doing now that the rain is doing the job outside ๐Ÿคช and I weedkiller the pathways, they are just too weedy to hoe and Iโ€™m not sure what else to do with them, I need a whole load of wood chip delivered ideally then I could use that to smother the weeds perhaps.

I still have plenty of tomatoes ripening I the tunnels and greenhouse but there are also a lot of green ones as well, thatโ€™s where green tomato chutney recipes are useful. I do though have a lot of very small cherry tomatoes that are ripe but smaller than average, I think I might do a ripe tomato chutney with these ๐Ÿ˜€

Sunday: Up and out to do the rounds, I was doing the orchard when I heard John chatting away and wondered who he was talking to, I suddenly remembered that the lads with the ferrets were coming this morning to do a bit of rabbiting lol. John went off to visit his Mum and I took a coffee out to the greenhouse, the sun is shinning this morning so it was a nice place to be for an hour or so. I spent my time, potting up some Chinese lantern that I had grown from seed but not yet divided and they were becoming a bit crowded in the one pot. The rest of the time I spent shelling beans and this is where the baked beans come in, they are haricot beans which I trialled and they did very well considering the few plants I grew. I also did a few kidney beans which also grew well, they have both been drying in the greenhouse waiting for the moment for me to shell them and now they are done. There are not many of each but it just shows that I could plant plenty more and they would be a good crop. I don’t think we use dried beans and pulses in this country as much as we should, me included. There seems to be divided opinion on wether to soak your dried beans prior to cooking or not, I think I may have to excitement with the soak and no soak methods and see which I prefer. I think I would err on the side of caution for the Kidney beans mind you as they contain a toxin that needs to be extracted before eating apparently but I shall still look forward to making a chilli with them at some point in the future, provided I remember to soak them prior to thinking, I’ll have chilli today ๐Ÿคช

I let the turkeys out into the orchard pen today and the first thing they did was fly over the top! So they are currently grazing in the front paddock, turkeys are quite sweet birds, much more gentle than I thought they would be and quite timid, the chickens soon see them off and tasty morsel lying around.

With the daylight hours ever decreasing the egg numbers are dipping drastically too, I think currently we are feeding twice as many birds than are laying ๐Ÿ˜ The last new lot have never got up to speed with only 38 eggs out of 50 and now they have dropped down to around 28. We have tried leaving them in until lunchtime to make sure they are not laying elsewhere, they have a light on for a few extra hours in the evening but it’s not helping much. They have been a ‘rouge’ batch from the beginning, the first day half of them flew over the electric fencing and we have not been able to keep them in despite multiple attempts at various things including heightening the fence, a lost cause is what they are I think.

Jammin, not the musical kind ๐Ÿ˜œ

I decided to change the theme layout of the blog this week to keep, you on your toes ๐Ÿ˜‹

Monday 2nd September: Oooo we are proper rolling into Autumn now. Dad and Sue enjoyed their week and did some helpful jobs around the place, mowing, picking, weeding etc John was off as well and got a few jobs done, not ones that were on my list for him mind you!

It turned out that mostly, the plums on the Victoria tree were fine so I have been picking those, some were stoned and frozen for winter use and this morning I have made some jars of jam. I love the colour of Victoria jam, a beautiful jewel colour and you know Autumn is just around the corner when you can start the blackberry picking in earnest.

I like whole fruit jams rather than jelly, the latter is made by cooking the fruit then straining it overnight through a jelly bag to get the liquid, if you like seedless then thatโ€™s what you would do but firstly I canโ€™t be bothered with the faff and I rather like to use all of the fruit, with the exception of apple, Iโ€™m not keen on the texture and so apple jelly is altogether nicer in my opinion.

I have still been regularly picking tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, beetroot, runner beans, carrots, courgettes, raspberries and hybrid blackberries, I keep testing the grapes for sweetness and they are almost ripe, the melons are doing nicely and the pumpkins and spaghetti squash are beginning to ripen.

Last week I dug up my blueberries and repotted them, they have not done well where they are, I donโ€™t know why, but time to move them and see if I can get a better crop from them. This is the time of year to sort out the strawberry beds and so that is on the to do list as are a hundred and one other jobs lol, seed collection, dividing and a bit of planning for next year.

I made a โ€˜chuck it inโ€™ sauce for the freezer, I used courgette, tomato, celery, garlic, onion, green pepper, carrot, oregano, basil, parsley, salt and pepper. I used what I had that was ripe and ready or needed using up, no particular quantities just what I had available, the tomatoes were blanched and skinned but apart from that everything else was just chopped and chucked, I sweated it off with a bit of avocado oil and then it will simmer gently down in its own juices. With all that in there it canโ€™t fail to taste good, each different batch would of course taste slightly different but I will freeze it and use it for pasta or even as a base for soup in the winter. I always freeze, I have never got round to thinking about canning on a serious level though I probably should some day.

Tuesday: One of the first jobs this morning was to re boil the jam as it didnโ€™t set! Pain in the bum as all the jars need re sterilising etc, itโ€™s done now and looks like a set has been reached, I did throw a lemon in with it to help it on its way. I have a feeling that the fruit has a lot more water content this year than previous years as too much liquid seems to be the problem. I am going to Swindon with Shelley this morning so I will look for a new thermometer as the bubble keeps separating in mine which canโ€™t help much either ๐Ÿ™„

I still have this ridiculous cough, I had it all week while Dad and Sue were here, it is getting better but slowly, last night I was up two or three times and consequently am tired already today and itโ€™s only 9am ๐Ÿ˜

While I was in Swindon Mum was here working away on the strawberry bed, I have strawberries all over the place and they need consolidating, the bed also needed raising as the slugs were getting most of them as they were trailing on the floor. This is the right time of year to sort out the strawberries and thin out any old ones and use the new runners as fresh plants.

Wednesday: Rain overnight which is good because the garden needed a sprinkle ๐Ÿ˜€ I am making more jam this morning ๐Ÿ˜œ plenty of berries to be picked at the moment and this is mainly blackberry but there are a few raspberries, mulberries, blueberries and a couple of cherries in there too so this is a mixed fruit jam.

This time of year is packed with preparing and storing the harvest, berries, top fruit, veg, nuts itโ€™s an abundant time of year and a busy one. I have a basket full of tomatoes to do something with not quite sure what yet maybe soup, you canโ€™t beat some fresh tomato soup in the depths of winter.

The hens are laying very well now and we have an abundance of eggs ๐Ÿคช I also have some pears to use up and when I see the words โ€˜one bowl, no fussโ€™ thatโ€™s a recipe I know Iโ€™m going to love so I made a cinnamon spiced pear cake.

We went over to my brothers after dinner as John had to pipe up a couple of radiators for him, when we got back it had rained again and it felt decidedly wintery ๐Ÿ˜ so a good mug of hot chocolate was in order, soon be Hygge time again ๐Ÿ˜€

Thursday: Sunny but chilly this morning, looks like it will be a nice day though so I got some washing on first thing. Slight problem with that at the moment as a spider has taken up residence in the wash basket ๐Ÿ™„ I tentatively pull clothing out knowing that any minute a 10ft hairy eight legged monster is going to leap out at me ๐Ÿคช

The wildlife is still abundant round here, each morning when I open the side door around 20/30 sparrows are startled and start flying from bush to bush, itโ€™s quite a sight. They appear to be feeding on the ground in the gravel at the front so bang goes my notion to weedkiller it at the end of the month, I am not really sure what to do, leave it all to grow and mow it?

I watched John for five minutes trying to catch an escaped chicken in vain on his way to his van this morning, I could have gone out and helped but it was much more fun to spectate ๐Ÿ˜‚

Not sure what I am going to do today, thatโ€™s the beauty of this place and my life, I can decide in a moment โ€˜to do or not to doโ€™ I write that glibly as very often a situation arises that needs sorting or something comes up that really canโ€™t wait.

The rabbits and guinea are still on their green diet, I have not bought a bag of hard feed since way back in spring, nor should it be necessary really with all the forage there is available. The kittens are doing well and are right at home here now, we have seen a lot less of them this week mind as Alfie (Sams dog) has been staying and he, for the want of a better word, is a tit ๐Ÿ˜ฌ continually chasing the birds, horse, cats, anything that might move and give him a game, the kittens, quite sensibly stay out of the way when he is around. I am keeping a close eye on the torts, they will begin to eat less now the heat has gone out of the ground, they will wind down until itโ€™s time for them to sleep for the winter. If you think about it, itโ€™s half a life, the sensible half mind you in the warmth of Spring and Summer ๐Ÿ˜€ Everything else is doing well, the three remaining turkeys are growing and occasionally make that gobbling noise which is funny to hear, the light Sussex are getting to the point where we will have to do what was intended with them ๐Ÿ™„ the laying hens are laying well and we have plenty of eggs available every day, just the young ducks that are slacking and still have not produced a single egg between them yet ๐Ÿ˜

I went out and did a bit of picking, mainly courgettes ๐Ÿ˜‚ they grow like weeds! I donโ€™t even eat them but they sell well and if they get too big the chickens love them ๐Ÿ˜€ I had a pot of agapanthus that came from Johns Mums and it was well and truly pot bound so I have divided it up into about seven new plants, now is a good time to do it, when they have gone over agapanthus need deadheading and feeding for six weeks according to Monty Don so splitting them and putting them into fresh compost will serve them well hopefully.

The wind is still cold and I feel a bit tired today which in turn makes me despondent ๐Ÿ˜ญ gets me wondering, why I am doing all this, what/who am I doing it for? Shall I cut back massively but I know itโ€™s just today and tomorrow if itโ€™s warm and I feel good I will be back on track ๐Ÿ˜€ When we started this journey the Lupus was not even on the radar and I was used to hard graft, in our previous house I had not only dug out the footings for a very large extension with only a jack hammer to aid me but completely transformed a large mostly lawned garden into a wonderful space with interest and abundance. The garden was opened once a year for viewing to aid a local charity and that meant being on top of things all the time, when we moved here the momentum to achieve something great was intensified but year by year it waned until I was so poorly that my system completely collapsed and another chapter in my life began, living with Lupus ๐Ÿ™„ However, I am not and never have been a quitter, always in it for the long haul and I still am but days like these when I am too tired to motivate myself leave me wondering, how about a small house and garden, lots of holidays and free time lol.

I found a little bit of energy later in the afternoon to do the egg collecting and feeding and a few other little jobs, the sun was shinning and the wind had dropped so it was quite lovely outside. Part of the tiredness is a this bloody stupid cough I have got, I have to sleep practically sitting up and wake up coughing a couple of times a night so itโ€™s no wonder really but it is getting slowly better.

Friday: We were up late and so it was me doing the animal rounds this morning, John has been doing it for ages and doing a sterling job. Iโ€™m not complaining ๐Ÿ™„ about his routine but……the birds have been getting away with murder, well not murder exactly ๐Ÿ˜œ but they have been left to become a bit delinquent, so this morning I reigned in some control ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Not just let out to run wild but kept in to eat and drink before being let out to run wild ๐Ÿ˜‚

Then onto a good few hours work in the fruit cage, pruning, cutting back, trying to dig up stinging nettles, until my legs felt like jelly, I havenโ€™t done that much hard work for a long while ๐Ÿ˜€

I had to reach into the back of the wardrobe this afternoon, no door to Narnia in there but there was a long woolly cardi with my name on it ๐Ÿฅถ I canโ€™t quite believe that just over two weeks ago the temperatures were so high, itโ€™s like a roller coaster ride, slow ride to the top then whooosh we are hurtling headlong into Winter in a split second, thatโ€™s a temperate climate for you, bloody temperamental it should be called ๐Ÿ˜ Now I am sporting a very fetching look of long cardigan with my gillet over the top for no other reason than I love my gillet and canโ€™t let go of it just yet ๐Ÿคฃ

Saturday: More work in the fruit cage and Mum came to help so we got it all done, looks a whole lot tidier and more manageable now, I have put a fair bit of weed membrane down on the side that is troubled with stinging nettles and bindweed I fed all the raspberries in the pots, I was going to put them in the ground but thatโ€™s a whole lot of work and they spread like crazy so I decided to leave them in the pots and look after them a bit better ๐Ÿ˜œ I harvested a load of carrots, I intend to make some tomato soup so will need some for that but the rest will be prepped for the freezer. Then I picked some blackberries and open froze them for using later and then a sandwich and a sit down, got to conserve energy as I have Josh and Flo this afternoon and overnight while Shelley and Martin go to a wedding lol, and we are taking the kids with us to an 18th birthday bbq ๐Ÿคช

Sunday: Pretty much a non day for me on the smallholding, I stayed over at Shelleys with the grandchildren last night so John was in charge all day ๐Ÿ˜€

The wrong shoes, plum moth and hard working Mums ๐Ÿ˜€

Monday 19th August: whoo hoo Monday again ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Not a bad day weatherwise so far, cool enough, a touch of sun, no rain and no wind ๐Ÿ˜€ After doing the morning stuff I got on in the garden, not veg gardening, today I am giving that a rest but flowers instead. I have a few plants that are struggling where they are and I wanted to save them so I have dug them up, a fushia, delphinium, lupin and gaura, and potted them in fresh compost and put them in the greenhouse for a boost. Then I went out to the front by the egg shed and hoed and weeded, dead headed and brushed, so it looks a bit more presentable now ๐Ÿ˜€ The ranunculus have died back and I want to try and store the bulbs over winter as they were pretty special so I have bought in the pot to sort them out and in its place I have put a dahlia which should flower soon.

I got dinner sorted for later, we had a roast chicken yesterday and got to use it all up lol so I will be having a baked potato/salad with mine and John will be having a throw it all in the pot and reheat job ๐Ÿ˜€ I also made a summer fruit pudding crumble with the blackberries and raspberries I picked this morning, I mixed them up with some greengages and I meant to take a photo before putting the crumble mix on top as the colours were vibrant, but I forgot ๐Ÿ™„

The Victoria plums, I have discovered have plum moth ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ I had a trap in the damson tree which is about 20ft away and I thought it would cover it but it seems not ๐Ÿ˜ so I have ordered some more traps and grease bands to do as many fruit trees as possible. Itโ€™s a pain in the arse to wait all year only to find they have moth in them grrrr

I keep eyeing up the mulberry tree and there are loads on there but the blackbirds are beating me to them every morning, mulberries turn very quickly, red one day, black and very squishy the next, hard to get them at the right time, I have not had one single berry yet ๐Ÿ˜ The biggest problem with the soft fruit is that the birds will eat them before they are ripe enough to pick!

When John came home he noticed some of the new hens had got out and on further investigation a big hole has been chewed in the netting, I think the geese are to blame but also the charge was not going through so John spent 2 hours fixing it. I went out when he had just about finished and he asked if I was going to help him put the birds to bed, I said, I havenโ€™t got the right shoes on. Anyone who works outside especially in and around paddocks/stables will know you need the right shoes, anyhow I obliged and went to the stables block to lock the birds in, I turned on the main light, turned around and caught my foot under the rubber matting which was slightly proud. I kind of flew, hands sprawled out in front of me and then belly flopped onto the hard ground beneath me, I cried out and then just lay there whimpering until John found me, concerned at first but then laughed when he realised I was grazed but not broken ๐Ÿ˜œ I feel lucky that I didnโ€™t break anything, especially my wrist which took the brunt and lucky that I had taken some ibrufen an hour before for my sinusitis (I know, Iโ€™m a walking disaster at the minute) Iโ€™m sitting here typing with bits of me smarting and I can imagine in the morning it will hurt or at the very least be stiff๐Ÿ™„

Tuesday: A little sore this morning but nothing much thank goodness ๐Ÿ˜… I spent a good deal of the morning trying to get the fruit cage under some sort of control, the bindweed has been awful this year and has rampaged through the raspberries smothering everything. I did other things but forgot to write them down and now poof, canโ€™t remember ๐Ÿ™„

Wednesday: I got busy doing some cutting back and tidying in the garden, then Mum came over and also got busy doing some weeding and tidying and suddenly itโ€™s all starting to look a bit more under control lol. I think I have decided that I am going back to the way I gardened before ๐Ÿ˜œ I will plant trees and shrubs in among things but I need a bit of order ๐Ÿคช and canโ€™t really cope too well with what seems like haphazard gardening. I think we have decided I should garden to what suits me and not try and follow a regime as such, much better for my sanity lol.

Some more plum moth traps arrived today so I have put them up in the trees to catch the males, I have until early September to trap them and hopefully slow down the numbers.

Thursday: A bloody good session outside this morning ๐Ÿ˜€ following on from Mums sterling work on the feverfew, which has gone beserk and taking over everywhere, I did a bit more to the same area and the pathway which is so weedy itโ€™s a job to distinguish from the garden! Then onto the hazel trees at the side of the house, normally at this time of year nothing needs doing to them but last autum we cut three of them back to let light into the tunnels on the other side. You can image how much growth they have put on and the tomatoes in the tunnels are struggling to ripen so I have cut back some of this years foliage and the stinging nettles to hopefully help with the light issues. Then I noticed that the ripe hazels are beginning to fall so I raked the area clean, itโ€™s easier to spot them that way ๐Ÿ˜€

Yesterday and today I have felt fit and well whoo hoo hence some hard graft, have to be careful though as wham it will hit me when Iโ€™m not looking lol.

I went on chicken watch because despite John spending another hour last night fixing holes, they have still got out today, so I am sat waiting to see where exactly they are doing it, luckily the sun isnโ€™t out ๐Ÿ˜€ At the moment the hens are behind electric thatโ€™s because they are only just starting to lay and we want them to lay in the nest boxes. If we let them free range straightaway they would just lay anywhere and we will not find the eggs, chicken training, who knew there was such a thing ๐Ÿ˜œ

I been sat here for 20 mins and no one has made a bid for freedom but I know as soon as I turn my back they will be out ๐Ÿ™„

I spent the evening sorting out, or trying to sort out, the office, going through old paperwork that we no longer need so that I can find any paperwork we do need!

Friday: Itโ€™s lunchtime and so far I have split my time between cleaning the bathroom and doing some washing, picking veg and sowing some winter seeds.

I am cleaning because Dad and Sue are coming to stay for a week, they arrive Sunday, I am not cleaning because they will mind the a bit of dust but because I would like it to be nice and clean when they are here lol. My thoughts reminded me about a conversation with Johns Dad once, asking me if Women dressed for Men or for themselves pffft, themselves of course (most women anyhow) quite conceited of the male of the species to think that we dress for them ๐Ÿคฃ We used to have some good conversations, generally we saw things from opposing angles which you would think put us at odds with each other, not in the slightest, we enjoyed discussing our different opinions and often learnt from each otherโ€™s views, and he always enjoyed playing devils advocate ๐Ÿ˜œ

The winter veg I have sown are not very exciting but will hopefully provide some fresh veg in the โ€˜hungry gapโ€™ some winter spinach which is always useful, sweetheart type cabbage which will be ready next spring and some mooli radish. The latter I have never grown before and they were free seeds, from experience weird and wonderful veg rarely grow well but no harm in trying, they grow as big as a tennis ball so will make great additions to soups and stews over winter.

I have picked a bit of veg this morning but to be honest itโ€™s meagre pickings, thatโ€™s because whatever I havenโ€™t used or frozen has sold out quickly and now Iโ€™m struggling to keep finding things to put out, there are worse problems to have I know ๐Ÿ™„

Saturday: Turned out to be a scorcher of a day with more to come over the next few days! We were up early because we wanted to get into town and get some shopping before it got too hot. Just before we left another early bird was up and over here, Mum came to do some more work on the weeds, itโ€™s all now looking pretty good largely due to her hard work ๐Ÿ˜“ so thanks Mum ๐Ÿ˜˜ I did a bit when I got back and John did a few jobs but by lunchtime it was very hot and in the afternoon the temp gauge in the greenhouse was off the scale which stops at 50c ๐Ÿ™„ Shelley, Josh and Flo came over and we sat in the shade until that even got too hot, after they had gone it was just basic jobs that got done.

I was babysitting Mia and the twins for a few hours while Sam went off in search of her sanity ๐Ÿคฃ with Luke to their local pub. I said to her โ€˜hats offโ€™ I donโ€™t know how she gets everything done, it took two hours to feed, wind and change them both then another two hours to settle them and in fact Lucie didnโ€™t settle for the whole evening. Mia was fab, patient, helpful and obliging at bedtime which made it a whole lot easier.

Sunday: An early sign off this week, temps are set to climb even higher today although at the moment itโ€™s overcast so we will see what happens. Again we were up early, I got straight on with watering as I couldnโ€™t do it last night and somethings are struggling, amazing that this time last week it had been raining for days! Then the last bit of cleaning before Dad and Sue arrive for the week, I probably wonโ€™t blog much if at all as I will be very busy entertaining etc ๐Ÿ˜€

Have a great Bank Holiday ๐ŸŒž
